Ballast Point Brewing Co. "Mango Even Keel"
12 fl. oz. can, no packaging code or freshness dating
So remind me, what's the "Even Keel"? There are so many beers anymore I just forget. Right, it's their "Session IPA", got it. Well that should be good then, right? A little more tropical character to give it a little more berth and depth.

Well, it's OK. In comparison to the standard "Even Keel" I'd have to say it doesn't really improve it. It's quite different, and it's OK, but it's not any better in my opinion. The mango's pretty solid in both flavor and aroma, and it's almost a fruit beer except that it's got a solid bitterness to it. Ballast point seems to be going crazy with all of these fruit flavored versions, and some of them are great, but I'm not so sure this one works as well. On the other hand it's not bad, there's a pleasant malt/fruit balance, and it's not overly bitter. There's certainly nothing technically wrong with it, and it's both interesting and refreshing. I wouldn't turn it down.

12oz can purchased as a single for $1.89 American Dollars. Julian dated on bottom indicates this brew was canned on 6/5/2016.

Clear light orange elixir poured into SA pint glass. 2 finger, thick head. Thick clouds of lacing as the tasting proceeds.

Tropical fruits headed up by the mango. Cotton candy.

Nice balance between the bitter hops and tropical fruit.

Light body, smooth finish but more substance then you'd think could be found in a 3.8% session.

A nicely done session IPA that's easy drinking with a lot of presence.

Similar to a McAlister's mango green (unsweet) tea, but with the smacky mouthfeel of hops!

A: The beer is slightly hazy yellowish amber in color and has a moderate amount of visible carbonation. It poured with a finger high off white head that died down, leaving a thin layer of bubbles covering the surface and lots of lacing coating the sides of the glass.
S: Moderate aromas of mango juice are present in the nose.
T: Similar to the smell, the taste is bursting with flavors of mangos and seems to overshadow just about all of the underlying citrusy hops, which only contribute a light to moderate amount of bitterness.
M: It feels light- to medium-bodied on the palate and has a moderate amount of visible carbonation.
O: This beer is easy to drink and can be considered sessionable. It's nice if you like mangos, but could use a better balance between the other citrusy hop flavors.

This beer is very refreshing. Nice golden amber color, foamy, off white head & sporadic lacing. Mostly clear, and very carbonated. The aroma is like fruit juice, mango forward of course. A little too perfume like in my opinion. The flavor is the same, with hints of vanilla and citrus hops. Light caramel malt as well. The aftertaste is bitter, so you remember you are drinking beer. I do enjoy many of BP's brews. But, unfortunately, I find their fruit beers to be a bit on the "candy" side. Artificially flavored even, like the Watermelon Dorado, Pineapple Sculpin, or Barmy. I've had beers in which the tropical fruit flavor is from the hops, which is good. If this beer was more subtle in the added fruit, it would be better in my opinion. Not so mild that you can't taste them, like Heavy Melon from NB, but not like a kids drink either.
