Style: American Porter

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 7.80%

Availability: Limited (brewed once)

Notes / Commercial Description:
Dark black with ruby red highlights, this Robust Porter is rich and complex. A blend of UK malts, chocolate rye and Belgian candi sugar provide a sweet chocolate, yet rich earthy quality. Malt forward with an aroma full of roasted malts, toffee and dark fruit, this National Homebrew Competition medal-winner is a great dessert beer or to pair with hearty foods.

Loud pop and noticeable release of CO2 upon opening. Pours a two inch thick head with streams of bubbles rising up through a dark deep brown and opaque glass. Head slowly recedes to rocky foam and leaves thick rings around the glass.

Low aroma of dark malt and raisins. Flavors of dark rich malt, raisiny, detectable alcohol, solventy. There's a rough-edged bitterness, perhaps more from roast malt than hops. In fact there is no hop flavor present. Metallic note in the finish.

Extremely full mouthfeel, gassy, filling. Needs more complexity, metallic note detracts.

Dark brown colored beer with a small brown colored head.

Smells strongly of chocolate. Scents of caramel and scent of spicy and slightly sour rye.

Starts out sweet and tasting of chocolate and caramel. Mild bitterness.

Mouthfeel is good.

Overall a tasty Porter.

In a pint glass the beer was black with a tiny head that faded quickly.
A sweet chocolate taste with a little vanilla.
Taste followed the nose. There was a hint of coffee also in the taste.
A bit on the thin side, but still enjoyable.

L: Pours chestnut brown with ruby highlights under a ½” light tan lacy foam collar with very fine bubbles that is moderately persistent.
S: Chocolate, light roast, toast, nuts.
T: Layered flavors featuring light chocolate, nuts, toast, dark dried fruit, spice. Nothing harsh or burnt. Malt flavors medium high to high, hop flavors and bitterness medium low.
F: Medium full to full body, creamy fine soft carbonation.
O: Very nice to drink.

Poured from 22 oz bottle into Belgian snifter.

A: Pours clear dark brown with decent tan head that's too bubbly and fairly quickly recedes to partial coat.
.
Aroma: Toffee, dates, vague dried fruits, fruitcake.

Flavor: robust (not always true of "robust porters"); both stronger and better than the aroma. Plenty of dark roasted grains, faint spicy hops, a minimal touch of smoke, and hints of coffee, bitter.chocolate, toffee, and spicy rye. Good sweet/bitter balance.

M: Medium carbonation and medium+ body.Nicely smooth.

Overall: A fine porter with good balance and complexity.

Pours a finger of tan head on a black body.
The aroma is chocolate, spices, cream and toffee.
The taste is rich chocolate, mild candy sweetness, coffee bitterness. Great balanced and complexity.
The texture is crisp and fizzy.
An outstanding porter.

Pours an effervescent mahogany with 2 fingers of tan head. Zero head retention & lacing

S: Cocoa, coffee, dark fruit

T: Carob, roasted grain & dark fruit & dryness up front. Dryness, coffee, roastyness & a little Baker's Chocolate as this warms, plus a little lactic sourness. Finishes roasty, dry, with a little woody hop, & lust a little boozey black currant

MF: Medium body, firm carbonation

A decent porter, but nothing worth revisiting

Bomber served into a large wine glass. #6 pours a clear dark brown with a finger of mocha foam and shows a crimson hue in the light. Offers decent retention and lace. Aromas of some dark malts and a touch of roast and chocolate though subtle overall. We'll see how she warms up.

Taste is equally subdued initially but expands right away with some exposure. Dry and roasty with light hop notes on the nose and tongue. Touch of dark fruits with warming though still quite dry for the ABV. Hints of light char on the finish which ends rather abruptly on the back of the palate.

Overall not really feeling it too much for this one. A good sipper with some interesting complexities. Dry and even vinous at times in character, and well attenuated. Still, the ABV doesn't show itself either and it kept me involved till the bottom of the glass nontheless. Hmmm.
