Red Velvet (Nitro)Red Velvet (Nitro)
Notes: This stout takes the cake.

Our Red Velvet oatmeal stout is a mind-bending beer. Like the cake that inspired it, the deep red color comes from beets, which add a rich, earthy character that complements the chocolate flavor and aroma. The foamy head of the nitro pour is our “icing”, adding a creamy smoothness to the mouthfeel. But this liquid dessert still finishes like a beer – not sweet, but just as satisfying.

I thought that a Ballast Point six-pack for $13.99 must equate to a pretty good beer, al least in Georgia. I guess my thoughts were muddled. The look did approach its name Red Velvet - a light reddish tinge at best. The smell offered a little chocolate, a little beet, and a whole lot of nothing else. The bubbly white head only appeared after I poured the second bottle straight down into the glass - no lacing just bubbles like from a recently used bar of soap. The head from the first bottle was virtually non-existent - nada, nothing, level. The taste is not, as advertised by Ballast Point, "creamy smoothness" and "liquid dessert". The feel on the tongue is a thinness I associate with water, and the taste is watery. Descriptive adjectives for this beer(?) include bland, boring, and insipid. I think I'll water my vegetable garden with the remaining four beers so I can return the beets to the soil.

Probably got a bad bottle but no carbonation whatsoever nitro or otherwise. Pours clear like red coolaid. No head. Smells sweet and tastes like liquid red velvet cake. No roast and definitely cloying. Not a stout.

Never thought I'd enjoy a beet and chocolate stout, but this was a concept that just worked. Nice chocolate notes. Great earthy notes and a nice experiment beer.

Poured from a 12 oz bottle into a nonic pint glass.

Pours a deep reddish color with a half-finger of creamy pinkish head. The head is gone almost instantly despite the hard pour, leaving no lacing. The colors are nice but this is The Phantom Menace of beer head.

The nose is tinny and metallic, with some faint chocolate and fruits. No. Just no.

The taste is pretty much the equivalent of licking a metal pole after a 3-year old who just ate red velvet cake and wiped his nasty fingers all over it. It's a mess. Chemicals and metal and maybe chocolate.

The feel is typical of a nitro stout but thinner and it leaves a strong metallic aftertaste.

Overall, just an awful beer. It doesn't taste like red velvet cake. It tastes like a robot's dick after humping a terrible chocolate cake. I have 5 more bottles of this and I might pour them all in the toilet and then take a sweaty dump. I'm certainly not drinking them.

Overlooked this one a few dozen times at my local craft store and finally grabbed it as filler in a mix a six.

Look - Pours a ruby red with only a thin head that never ends up amounting to much. Very surprising considering that this is apparently a nitro beer. Carbonation appears to be around moderate. Stick after a finished glass isn't even a factor.

Smell - Creme soda and beets are quite apparent. Small touches of coffee.

Taste - Pretty much follows the nose. Cream soda followed by the beats with a touch of coffee.

Feel - Water thin with almost no carbonation. Swallows easy with a moderate bitterness.

Overall - Think beet infused Calm Before The Storm and you'll pretty much have this down to a T. Not a bad beer but I don't think it tasted like red velvet cake in the least. I'll finish the glass but I wouldn't return to this one.

Yuck! I can't overstate how much I anticipated enjoying this beer - my favorite things in this world are nitros, stouts, red velvet cake, and chocolate. There is no reason in this world I should have found this so retched.

It is a bizarre combination of unsweetened, pure beet juice (which I normally wouldn't dislike), mixed with a hop bitterness inexplicable in context. This is nearly the most I've spent on a single bottle of beer, and, wow, how disgusting.

Paid $15 for a sixer of this. I love ALL BP beers. Was told from rep that this was the real deal of Nitro beers. (My first introduction w/ Nitro's was w/ Guinness Nitro IPA. I told said rep I hated the GN IPA, for it feeling totally flat. He said that's why GN IPA didn't get great reviews. This crap was just as Flat. Tasted ok, but I need a random bubble or two in my beer. If anyone remembers root
Beer kool-aid packets from the early '80's, this is it. It's like wanting a nice fizzy coke, and getting the last end of the 2 liter bottle.

BOD 1/12/17. Pours a beautiful shade of red, similar to cranberry juice, that is slightly opaque. No head volume whatsoever. Therefore, lacing and retention are also non factors. Consequently, a low score on appearance rather than terrible since it is a nitro beer.

Unusual nose for a beer. It does smell like cake with vanilla icing but seems artificial. Having had red velvet cake many times, this beer does deliver the aroma as advertised. Underneath the red velvet cake notes is a subtle element of roast - if you look for it! Overall, the aroma is very good.

Medium body with a texture that is smooth. The nitrogen / body balance is lacking. Effervescence is barely detectable, though expected due to lack of any head. This is the second of three bottled nitrogen beers that have been flat ( different beer and brewers in each case). Going forward, I will only purchase canned nitro beer. Overall, poor mouthfeel characteristics.

Like the nose, the flavor profile is unusual. Unlike the nose, the flavor profile is not pleasant nor indicative of red velvet cake. Underneath is a roast element that resembles a slightly watered down stout. Over that is a flavor that has a touch of artificial vanilla and something unidentifiable but not bad. A very subtle bitterness arrives in the bland middle and lingers. Unfortunately, the best thing going for this trick beer is the cool bottle.

This beer pours a beautiful clear cranberry red with a perfect cascading nitro head. The aroma leads with chocolate, oatmeal raisin cookie, cinnamon, and banana nut bread. The flavor again reminds me of an oatmeal raisin cookie at first. There are also notes of vanilla, chocolate, and just a touch of bitterness. The mouthfeel is medium bodied, and as named, velvety. Overall this beer is gimmicky, but it fits the gimmick and tastes god doing it.

Picked up a single from TW Arrowhead 3-12-17 for $2.99. Bottled on 1-19-17. Stored in my beer fridge since purchase.

Beer poured a reddish golden color with a wimpy head. Lots of sediment visible.

Nose is of chocolate and lightly kilned malt.

Taste is artificial chocolate up front over a light roasted malt body. Finish is chocolate.

Mouthfeel is light and sort of smooth.

Overall i will give an A for creativity but the execution and outcome were not satisfying to me.

When is a stout not a stout? When it's golden. And when it's red. That's right, the beer that boasts the name "Red Velvet" portrays that caky flavor in all its brightness and denseness but in beer form. Ballast Point has gone way out on that limb here.

The "stout's" appearance is one of framboise or kriek, pouring a bright ruby color and with a dense pinkish froth that conjures memories of childhood strawberry milk. Berry-like and redolent of cherry, the nose is mild but seems modestly of cake batter and fruit. As the ale encroaches on the tongue, it does so with a mild, calm and somber batter-like sweetness.

Oddly, the procession of taste is slow to develop. Its sweetness develops into a gradual milkiness, vanilla spice and somber milkshake initial taste. A bitterness of hops grow to remind the palate that there's a beer upon the senses yet the peripheral tastes are more suggestive of dessert. Trending fruity, creamy and caky, a moderate chocolate taste makes late introductions as the finish is smooth and calm.

German chocolates and fine milk chocolates play on the finish as a beer and cream character begin to frame the taste of red velvet cake. The majority of flavors seem disjointed, ill balanced and tepid, but the medium bodied beer finally takes on the flavor of the dessert in a drifting after palate of vanilla, fruit and white chocolate.

Bright cherry red with nice cascade and nitro cream head. Mild oat and beet aroma. Flavor of golden malt, oatmeal, beets, minimal chocolate and no roasted malt as expected for the style. Moderate body. Smooth nitro bubbles. Cake like, velvety texture. Overall, unique and a little weird. Worth a try once. Not sure what I'll do with the other five bottles.

L - Hazy pinkish, reddish, orange with some clarity around the edges with a medium off-white head that sticks around and leaves some lacing behind. The fact that this is a stout and is this color is pretty amusing though.
S - Slight notes of chocolate, oats, barely, and some earth - the smell is pretty faint however.
T - Pretty much follows the nose with notes of chocolate, oats, and barely followed by notes of earth - probably from the beets. Somewhat of a mineraly, watery, finish. Sweet, but definitely, not getting the red velvet vibes I was hoping for.
F - Not really creamy for a nitro stout with only a very slight hint of creaminess - light to medium bodied with a moderate amount of carbonation. Crisp and somewhat thin for a stout - not very stout like at all. I'll admit, I probably did not pour this one quite as vigorously as I should have to get the most out of the nitro...
O - As far as stouts go, this is just ok. It's good, but not great, and definitely not amazing. Honestly, if it weren't for the gimmicky marketing, experimental style, and awesome artwork, I probably wouldn't have enjoyed this beer half as much as I did. Overall, a nice try from Ballast Point, and worth a try to anyone looking to try something new and different.

12oz nitro-bottle poured into a pint glass. Pours a clear and transparent ruby red with a small creamy and bubbly light pink head. The aromas are fruit forward. Lots of raspberry, cherry and strawberry. Subtle hints of vanilla. Malts are there. The flavors are fruity and bitter. I'd say it's bittersweet. Very mild tartness. The oats are present with some hints of chocolate. The berry flavors are there with more hints of cherry. The vanilla is very subtle. Lots of grains. Alcohol goes unnoticed. Mouthfeel is basically what you would expect from a nitro beer. It's light, thin and watery but this one has the slightest amount of carbonation. It's pretty smooth and easy to drink.

This is an interesting brew. It's more of a fruit beer than anything. It does have some oatmeal stout qualities if you drink it blind, but the visual makes it hard for you to think that you're drinking a stout.
