Style: American Stout

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 6.50%

Availability: Rotating

Notes / Commercial Description:
Our Cinnamon Raisin Commodore is truly a story of experimentation. Originally a gold-medal winning American stout first born in our R&D program, our brewers developed a new variation, adding cinnamon and raisins to this dark, bittersweet brew. The result is just the right amount of sweet and spice, with roasty maltiness at the helm.

Thick dark pour with a lasting tan head and quality lacing. Picking up roasted malt and raisin on the nose. Can't find the cinnamon. I am, however, getting heavy cinnamon on the tongue. The raisin is in the back with the hop bite. Wow, this just keeps getting better. Great thick body on this beer. Would go great with oatmeal cookies. I'll be getting this again.

Pours dark as a starless night - pitch black. Quite outstanding head volume. Retention and lacing are world class.

Outstanding nose that is slightly sweet with chocolate. A nice toasty note of roast lingers in the background. Cinnamon and raisin are subtly present with cinnamon being slightly more prevalent. Also present is a lightly charred grainy aspect that some might misinterpret as coffee.

Medium body that approaches heavy medium. The texture is quite smooth, a bit oily and has a touch of creaminess to it. The carbonation / body balance is borderline outstanding. There is enough mid-palate effervescence and the finish nice and prickly.

The flavor profile is border line outstanding. The cinnamon is a bit overpowering and tends to mask the complexity of this stout and upsets the balance. Roast makes it's appearance first in a grainy fashion. The middle is subtly sweet but cinnamon arrives and masks the chocolate notes for all practical purposes. Bitterness is quite mild and is mostly cinnamon in nature. Raisin makes a subdued subtle appearance about three quarters through. The finish is mostly cinnamon and it lingers.

Bottle. Brown. Smells like BBQ. Tastes like if John Wayne Gacy was the head chef at a Cinnabon. A spice nightmare. So pungent and unnecessary. Made me want to hurt stuff.

A: The beer is jet black in color. It poured with a finger high dense tan head that gradually died down, leaving a thin head covering the surface and lots of lacing down the sides of the glass.
S: Light to moderate aromas of cinnamon are present in the nose along with hints of raisins.
T: The follows the smell, except that the cinnamon flavors are subdued a bit by the underlying stout, although they do linger and stand out into the finish, which also has some notes of roasted malts.
M: It feels light- to medium-bodied, a little airy and somewhat dry on the palate with a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: While this beer is packed with lots of cinnamon and raison flavors but doesn't seem to be over the top.

One of the most unique stouts I seen in a long time poured into an imperial pint. Very nice deep dark black stout with a 1/2 inch of mocha tinted foam. Smell is rather good not getting much cinnamon and some tartness from what I assume is the raisin. Does smell rather sweet which is nice. Ow yes cinnamon is much more in the flavor followed by strong coffee and oatmeal reminding me like other said of an oatmeal cookie in the finish. It is not super sweet which really lets the beer push more toward the bitter side so saying cookie really throws me off a bit. Body is on par for a semi hefty stout like this very smooth and drink able.

Overall for what I paid for the single I am kind of let down especially when everyone keeps saying "oatmeal cookie" to me it's just a smooth coffee stout with a hefty splash of cinnamon and a slight bready character.

Look- Black liquid w/ half finger tan head. Nice lacing all around the glass.

Aroma- Raisins dominate with a little cinnamon in there. Also a little berry at the end, from hops maybe, or could be the raisins. A little bready malt in there too. Really comes across like and oatmeal raisin cookie.

Taste- follows the nose, like drinking an oatmeal cookie. There's some coffee-like roast at the beginning that wasn't in the nose, however. A little bit tart at the end from raisins, then finishes with a mild hop bitterness.

Feel- on the lighter side of medium bodied, really similar to a glass of water

Overall- very nice. I really like the base beer, and this was basically that with an oatmeal raisin cookie thrown into it.

From bottle at home. Poured into a semi-tulip snifter. Deep opaque mahogany with a sparse lacing. Perhaps it's too cold, but there is little aroma & with a billing of cinnamon & raisin I expected something.

Texture was just OK, but I guess I'm spoiled by all the BIG stouts I've had lately. The flavor is barely there (with a chill) & fleeting at that.

I've come to enjoy many Ballast Point brews, but this is one that I may pass on next time....unless it opens up as it warms.

ADDENDUM: As it warmed, so has my opinion. The texture is the much fuller & the subtlety of the cinnamon is showing in the aroma & flavor. I'll assume that the raisins are adding to the sweet side.

L - Pitch black with 1 finger of tan head, some tan lacing left all over the top of the brew and glass

S - Cinnamon and chocolate dominate.

T - Chocolate, cinnamon, roasted malt, and fairly sweet.

F - Full body, light carbonation. Silky smooth

O - A tasty slow sipper. A little too sweet to have this one again
