Ballast Point Brewing Company

Style: American Double / Imperial IPA

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 8.50%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
We’ve developed many IPA recipes in our R&D program, but right from the tank, our Manta Ray Double IPA was a winner. Aromas of fresh, citrusy tangerine, melon and light pine leap from the beer and linger over a smooth finish. Like its namesake, this brew can sneak up on you – a big beer without a bite.

Some people are saying that this is the new Sculpin and I totally agree this is better than Sculpin and way better than Dorado. I love how smooth and rich and relaxing this beer is with the hoppy note and care they put into this beer. This I feel is Ballast Point's next generation Sculpin and next flagship of Ballast Point.

Very smooth, doesn't taste like an 8% beer. It has an after taste of Mellon.

I normally don't like ABV above 7.5%, but this beer I can not taste the alcohol. The grapefruit aroma is wonderful. I love this beer.

My kind of DIPA...a lot of tropical and citrus notes on the aroma and taste with some light pine lingering. Thinking papaya, pineapple, mango, tangerine, mandarin oranges...

Light malt base holds up but lets all this juicy hop goodness shine.

Medium to full bodied. Perfect carbonation. Finishes dry and leaves you wanting more after every sip.

Dynamite DIPA.

Love it. Absolutely love it.

Look: Pours a crystal clear golden yellow color with a big two finger satin white head of foam that laces the glass well.

Aroma: Orange custard, grapefruit rind, pineapple, mango and mild pine sap.

Taste: Delicious and juicy with tons of tropical fruit and a mild bitter pine backbone. At first sweet tangerine, bitter grapefruit pith, orange marmalade and faint pineapple, with notes of mango and burnt orange custard. Bitter earthy hops and pine sap plays a supporting role in the background, complementing the tropical flavor - the hops are there but not dominating the palate. Finishes on more notes of tropical fruit and a delicate, flaky, biscuity flavor with a lingering bitterness.

Feel: 8.50% Abv is well hidden, but still noticeable to an extent yet not in your face. Feel is crisp and bubbly with a mid-heavy feel. Bittersweet and dry.

Overall: A huge IPA without the bite or overtly gimmicky bitterness. Refreshing. Well made. Another winner from BP. I honestly love all of their IPAs. Dorado, Sculpin, Big Eye... each and every one an incredible beer. Manta Ray is no exception.

L: Beautiful golden color with ample pure white head
S: Incredible tropical fruit aroma. Papaya/mango in particular. Very faint hints of pine.
T: Luscious tropical fruit flavors with a bit of hoppy kick. Again, the hops are a bit piney as well, faint spruce hints as well.
F: Medium-full body, slightly-above-average quantity of slightly-above-average intensity carbonation
O: This is a very good IPA, one of the best I remember having in a while. Grab it if it's available in your area!

Golden with a hint of haze, no carbonation and 5 fingers of foamy, yellow tinged head.

Smells of passion fruit, mangos, pine, caramel and garlic.

The taste follows the nose with a nice sweetness, solid bitterness and big balance of tropical fruit notes. Very refreshing.

Medium to light body with medium to low carbonation.

Got and drank in Chiang Mai. July 8th, 2017. Amazing balance, fruitiness and smoothness.
