this is another gimmick from these guys. maybe if you have never heard of ballast point before, or if you arent familiar with baller west coast ipa, you could accept this, but as good as it may taste in isolation, it without a shadow of a doubt pales in comparison to the original, and we have to see that as some ploy to sell you another one. with these being fourteen dollar sixers or something, i feel like a lot of beer geeks may have been baited once, but would not again. but now we haave this "new beer" and we can rope them in once again. i dont like that man, and this is good, but it probably always should have been unfiltered, at least in the majority sense, and this isnt that different from the original, but may have the shortest shelf life ever too. the hops are bitter and piney, maybe the malt seems a little lighter, my first sculpin ever to this seems like quite the departure, but this is still good and no matter what these guys this is a good business model these days, sticking to the original sculpin, or as close as they can get to it right now, is definitely the best move. good beer here, but does it even approach the original in overall specialness? no it does not...

Poured from a 12 oz. bottle into an IPA glass.

Appearance: Pours a hazy amber orange. Moderate amount of bubbles and and some floating sediment. Big two finger off white head that settles into a thin creamy patch.

Smell: A pretty juicy hop driven aroma with a scent of citrus fruit and pine. Upfront scent of citrus hops with some grapefruit, orange peel, mango, apricot, and lemon along with pineapple. Earthy hop hints of pine resin and grass as well as some floral hints. Malt hints of caramel, grains, and cracker with some yeast. A very good juicy aroma.

Taste: Like it smells, a juicy and earthy hop driven taste with notes of citrus fruit and pine. Upfront taste of citrus hops with juicy notes of grapefruit, orange peel, mango, lemon, and apricot along with some pineapple. Earthy hop notes of pine resin and grass. Moderate bitterness. Malt notes of caramel, cracker, and grains along with yeast. A pretty good citrus hop forward taste.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied with a moderate level of carbonation. Juicy and fairly oily with a drying finish.

Overall: Another pretty good version of Sculpin. Big citrus flavor.

Been a while since I reviewed anything here but when I saw this got an 88 I had to. I think that's a little too low here. I'm a fan of BP and some versions of the sculpin are way better than others and this is one of those better ones. This one reminded me of when sculpin was a force to be reckoned with. Seems like so long ago but this brought me back to that time. I think they did a good job on this one. Yeah maybe a little overpriced and maybe that's why it's rated lower, but this is a good beer. I look forward to having another. Will prob get thru this six pack real quick.

Holding this less than 2 week old brew on Easter Sunday in a tulip with the sunlight shining upon it reveals a beautiful late hazy summer sunshine like, glowing peach color that invited the eye like a woman who you've been dying to hang out with that tells you to finally come over. Smell permiates the nostrils. Succulent peach, tangerine, apricots. Feel is a touch fuller than normal sculpin as expected, no complaints here. Taste is much like the aroma, full bouquet of aromatic fruits. Kinda like a can of fruit cocktail. Welcoming semi dry after bite. Overall, I know Sculpin gets knocked nowadays for being too pricey and I wish it was cheaper myself, but for a treat and being really fresh I have to applaud this unfiltered version.

Cheers All....

I've enjoyed traditional Sculpin in the past - It is very good .... so I imagined the unfiltered version would be exceptional. It is! I always feel unfiltered brews instill extra flavor and overal body in a brew. The flavor of this was amazing. All other characteristics were exceptional also. I wish this was a regular offering.

Look: Super hazy with a lot of floaties in there. Also had a decent sized off white head.
Smell: Smells like regular Sculpin. Basically a bunch of tropical fruit smells backed by a bunch of hops.
Taste: Less hop forward than regular Sculpin is for me. Fruit flavors are still there with less of a bitter aftertaste.
Feel: This is the biggest change IMO, with this beer feeling much heavier than the original and not as smooth.
Overall: I really like Sculpin when it is fresh and I liked this about the same or just slightly less. Next time I see both in the store and if they are the same price, I would just grab the one with the fresher bottles.

12oz bottle dated 3/29/16.. 2 weeks fresh in NH? Impressive.

Pours hazy gold with a copper hue and a moderate head. Retention is average but nice lacing. Aromatics are nice but not anywhere near the level of hops as many modern-day IPA's. Shades of pine, grapefruit, pear, and candied peach. Medium bodied with a crisp, lightly resinous mouthfeel. Pine-rubbed grapefruit leads the palate with a trace of malt and a firm bitterness. A bit warming on the throat with citrus following through. Finishes with some lingering pine resin and a pithy bitterness.

Nice beer and perhaps a bit more hoppy than the standard Sculpin, or maybe it's just the freshness giving that impression. Either way, what was once one of the hoppiest, most delicious IPA's available is now no longer in the top tier with such a myriad of hoppier, tastier options available.

Bottle to tulip glass.

I'm enjoying this (4th of my 6 pack) as much as I remember enjoying the regular sculpin. Does the unfiltered nature make it look better? Haziness, a plus? Does it smell better more aromatic with the sediment mixed in? Does the additional sediment give it a sturdier mouth feel? I'll buy two of the three, look and smell, but not the mouthfeel. Overall slightly higher marks than sculpin but basically the same beer.

Moderate pour yields a one inch plus white head over a golden/light amber body with very nice, sticky lacing. Nose of tropical fruit, citrus, and a bit of pine dankness. Taste follows the nose to a "T." Very nice feel and overall, I loved the regular, habanero, and pineapple Sculpins (not the grapefruit); and I love this. Cheers!

12 oz bottle. Pours hazy golden orange with a big rocky white head that retains well and leaves little lacing.

The aroma is subdued - sweet floral malt with a little fruit and plasticky hops.

The flavor is sweet bready cream malt with floral, slightly fruity hops. The mouthfeel is medium bodied with low carbonation and is a bit watery.

Overall, pretty subdued for a sculpin with not much fruit.

Had on tap. Pours clear, gold in color with 1/4 inch head. Taste is grapefruit, lemon rind, with a touch of herbal hops. Very bitter, medium bodied, with moderate carbonation. A sipper of a beer. Of all the sculpins I have tried, this one is near the bottom. The bitterness hits, but the flavors do not come together as well as they do in the original. An above average IPA, but I will stick with other Sculpin variations.

Copper to dark gold in color with a lightly hazy complexion. There's a quarter inch of densely packed off white head. Light to moderate lacing. The nose is packed with bitter orange and faint light malt. I'm tasting that thick citrus to orange bitter hop flavor with a bit of light malt in the back of the palate. The mouth is moderately dense with resinous and sticky hops.
