I've enjoyed traditional Sculpin in the past - It is very good .... so I imagined the unfiltered version would be exceptional. It is! I always feel unfiltered brews instill extra flavor and overal body in a brew. The flavor of this was amazing. All other characteristics were exceptional also. I wish this was a regular offering.

Moderate pour yields a one inch plus white head over a golden/light amber body with very nice, sticky lacing. Nose of tropical fruit, citrus, and a bit of pine dankness. Taste follows the nose to a "T." Very nice feel and overall, I loved the regular, habanero, and pineapple Sculpins (not the grapefruit); and I love this. Cheers!

Poured from a 12 oz. bottle into an IPA glass.

Appearance: Pours a hazy amber orange. Moderate amount of bubbles and and some floating sediment. Big two finger off white head that settles into a thin creamy patch.

Smell: A pretty juicy hop driven aroma with a scent of citrus fruit and pine. Upfront scent of citrus hops with some grapefruit, orange peel, mango, apricot, and lemon along with pineapple. Earthy hop hints of pine resin and grass as well as some floral hints. Malt hints of caramel, grains, and cracker with some yeast. A very good juicy aroma.

Taste: Like it smells, a juicy and earthy hop driven taste with notes of citrus fruit and pine. Upfront taste of citrus hops with juicy notes of grapefruit, orange peel, mango, lemon, and apricot along with some pineapple. Earthy hop notes of pine resin and grass. Moderate bitterness. Malt notes of caramel, cracker, and grains along with yeast. A pretty good citrus hop forward taste.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied with a moderate level of carbonation. Juicy and fairly oily with a drying finish.

Overall: Another pretty good version of Sculpin. Big citrus flavor.

Look: Super hazy with a lot of floaties in there. Also had a decent sized off white head.
Smell: Smells like regular Sculpin. Basically a bunch of tropical fruit smells backed by a bunch of hops.
Taste: Less hop forward than regular Sculpin is for me. Fruit flavors are still there with less of a bitter aftertaste.
Feel: This is the biggest change IMO, with this beer feeling much heavier than the original and not as smooth.
Overall: I really like Sculpin when it is fresh and I liked this about the same or just slightly less. Next time I see both in the store and if they are the same price, I would just grab the one with the fresher bottles.

12 oz bottle, 11 days old. Freshest Ballast Point I think I've ever seen.

This one improves on regular Sculpin in pretty much every aspect. They should probably just replace it with this, because regular Sculpin tastes a little dated at this point.

Bottle dated 17094 into a tulip glass.

L: Pours ever so slightly hazy bronze with a finger of medium density white head with limited retention and left streaked lacing.
S: Typical Sculpin citrus heavy, perhaps some very subtle floral and pine notes. A bit less dynamic than usual.
T: Follows the nose, but again a bit less dynamic than typical Sculpin. Finishes with moderate bitterness, and some lingering astringency.
F: Medium bodied, carbonation on the higher side, slick/silky mouthfeel.
O: While I enjoyed the beer, I feel that the unfiltered approach soften the edges on the original Sculpin which were always one of the things I loved about that beer. If I catch it on draft I'll likely grab a pint, but not something I'm grabbing a 6er of for my preferences.

Holding this less than 2 week old brew on Easter Sunday in a tulip with the sunlight shining upon it reveals a beautiful late hazy summer sunshine like, glowing peach color that invited the eye like a woman who you've been dying to hang out with that tells you to finally come over. Smell permiates the nostrils. Succulent peach, tangerine, apricots. Feel is a touch fuller than normal sculpin as expected, no complaints here. Taste is much like the aroma, full bouquet of aromatic fruits. Kinda like a can of fruit cocktail. Welcoming semi dry after bite. Overall, I know Sculpin gets knocked nowadays for being too pricey and I wish it was cheaper myself, but for a treat and being really fresh I have to applaud this unfiltered version.

Cheers All....
