A 12 fl. oz. bottle with a Julian bottled on date of 17321, meaning that it was bottled on 17th November 2017. Poured into a Lost Abbey teku glass.

Appearance: A lightly hazy bright copper orange colour with quite a bit of floaties slowly settling at the bottom of the glass. There was also a two finger off white head that had great retention and left nice lacing.

Aroma: Tropical fruit mango, pineapple and apricot at the start followed closely by grapefruit and light pine.

Taste: Sweet-ish pineapple, orange and apricot followed by bitter grapefruit zest, citrus rind, pine and a light touch of biscuit at the end.

Mouthfeel: Medium to light bodied with moderate carbonation.

Overall: Nice and easy to drink and an interesting twist on the original. However, I definitely prefer the original and grapefruit version over this. Still worth a try though.

Just plain good as all Sculpin varieties go! This is what I crave when I want a kickass IPA...not too bitter and plenty of fruit flavor. Well balanced all the way thru

So you'd think this would be an easy review to write but it's not. I should have tasted the unfiltered version side by side with the standard version but I goofed and didn't think of it in time. If you need to know what the original Sculpin tastes like please refer to the standard Sculpin review, but this review is about whether or not the unfiltered version of Sculpin is better, worse, or fairly the same. And that's what I asked myself before I bought it, and that's what I asked myself the entire time I was drinking it: Is it better, worse, or the same? So let's eliminate "the same". It's definitely different in the mouthfeel, it's smoother, and it seems fuller although that can't actually be the case. It also looks different because it's cloudy, but to be honest the original Sculpin is quite hazy to begin with. More importantly, I think it tastes just a little bit different as well although I can't really explain that - I guess it just tastes fuller jin the same way it feels fuller. It seemed more rounded, and less bitter, and I wonder if the carbonation is lower in the unfiltered version? The next question if we're working backwards in my questioning should be "Is it worse?" and the answer is no, not by any means. It is definitely not worse, but of course that was entirely expected, although I have had unfiltered versions of beers where the yeast itself has added some acidity and bite and actual yeast flavor and kind of thrown off the balance (usually too much yeast), but that's not the case here. I'd say that if you like regular Sculpin you'll like the unfiltered version, or like it better, but I doubt you'd dislike it or think any lesser of it. So all that leaves is "better", and I think, yes, it is, but I wasn't blown away by it. It wasn't "day and night", or even "amped up", it was just smoother and rounded and an all-over basically better beer drinking experience. Of course that's coming from a fan of cask-conditioned and unfiltered ales so take that as you wish. In the end I would always go for the unfiltered version if it was available, but apparently it's a limited release.

Appearance – two fingers of head over a deep yellow, cloudy body. Lots of lacing left on the glass.

Aroma – Grapefruit and tangerines, yeast, and caramel malt.

Taste – Strong pine with a bitter and somewhat harsh pine aftertaste.

Mouthfeel – full, not too heavy.

Overall – the aftertaste was harsher than I would have liked. Not my favorite of the Sculpin family.

A: This poured a cloudy gold with rocky off white head.
S: It smelled like fresh tangerines and pineapple, with some grapefruit.
T: It tasted like fresh tangerines and ripe pineapple, with some mild grapefruit. It had a clean and bittersweet aftertaste.
M: It was oily with some carbonation. Nice full body.
D: This was not the most bold or bitter IPA, but it was one of the most delicious. Great citrus and tropical scent and taste. The body was solid and the finish was smooth, so it was really easy to drink. Fantastic brew.
