Style: American Pale Wheat Ale

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 4.00%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
Our Sea Rose tart cherry wheat ale is a fresh take on fruit beers. Originally conceived during an employee-led R&D brew, it’s one of our most imaginative recipes yet. The American wheat style is light and clean, while fresh cherry juice adds a soft coral color and fruity nose that gives way to a dry, slightly tart finish. It’s approachable, yet unexpected—exactly what we love to brew.

I picked up a bottle of Ballast Point's Sea Rose last week for $1.79 at The Lager Mill. I was looking for a new beer to try and this one caught my eye, so lets see how it goes. 2017 Vintage. Poured from a brown 12oz bottle into a teku.

A- The label is nice, it goes with the name and it's a little eye catching. It poured a orange amber color that also took on a slight pink hue when held to the light and it two fingers worth of bubbly off white head that died down to a thin ring that eventually faded away and it left just a little bit of spotty lacing behind. This is a pretty nice looking beer, but I wish it had a little better lacing.

S- The aroma starts off with a higher amount of medium sweetness with a fruity aroma being the first to show up, it's a little cherry like, but it also has some raspberry and other berry like aromas coming through. Up next comes a lightly tart aroma that goes into a little bit of doughy yeast and that's followed by the malts which impart some wheat, bready, grainy, pale malt and sweet malt like aromas with no single one sticking out the most. This beer has a pretty nice aroma, it's well balanced and it lives up to it's description.

T- The taste seems to be similar to the aroma, but a little lighter and it starts off with a slightly higher amount of medium sweetness with the fruit still being the frist to show up, this time it's more cherry like, but it also is a good amount lighter this time. Up next comes a light amount of tartness that's followed by the doughy yeast and that goes ito the malts which show up just about as much as they did in the aroma and they impart all the same aspects. On the finish there's no bitterness with a little tartness that quickly faded away and it had a light cherry and malty aftertaste. This is a nice tasting beer, but I was hoping the taste was a little more bolder like the aroma is.

M- Smooth, pretty crisp, a little clean, slightly refreshing, on the lighter side of being medium bodied with a higher amount of medium carbonation. The mouthfeel is pretty nice and it works well with this beer.

Overall I thought this was a nice beer and it's a solid example of the style, I liked it, but I was hoping it would have had a little more flavor than it did. This beer had ok drinkability, one is enough for me, i might get bored with it after that. What I like the most about this beer is the appearance, aroma and mouthfeel, they were nice and the highlights of this beer. What I like the least about this beers is the taste and drinkability, the both could use a little work. I don't think I would buy this beer again, but I wouldn't turn one down and I would recommend if your want a wheat beer with a little bit of tart cherries. All in all I liked this beer, but I didn't love it and I think if they added a little more wheat and tart cherries it would turn out better. It's not a favorite Ballast Point beer and it's a solid example of the style. Nice job, this is a solid beer, keep it up.

Very interesting fruit beer, very pleasant cherry wheat ale beer. Drinks light but finishes with a nice dry flavor with a hint of tart. The cherry flavors do show up when drinking. Overall good tasting beer.

This beer, in my mind, should be a tart cherry wheat beer. At least from reading the label, that is what I'm thinking. However, upon actual tasting of the beer, that is not what I would call it. Pours a clear, reddish hue with a bit of a white head. Smells of very faint cherry flavor and wheat. The taste follows suit. The cherry is so mild that there is a zip of tart that is quickly overtaken by the mild wheat flavor/"beer aftertaste". I could drink it, but it wouldn't be high on my list of brews if there were other choices on the menu.

L: dark gold with a light haze and a slight red tint under a robust 1.5" white foam collar.

S: Cherry and pomegranate aromas dominate followed closely by some wheat and a very faint hint of hops

T: cherry and pomegranate with a tartness a little less than a Granny Smith apple

F: medium light body and medium to medium high carbonation

O: This mildly tart refreshing beer has some wheat beer character behind the fruit

12 oz bottle.
Pours with a clear, pinkish copper body that has a high amount of visible carbonation. The modest size white head has decent retention.
Aroma: fresh baked wheat bread with fainter fresh and baked cherries.
Flavor: follows the aroma but with relatively weaker malts versus fruit notes; moderately tart, at most. Clean.
Feel: medium-light body; medium-high carbonation; quite dry.

Overall: an excellent, dry session ale, although I'd prefer a bit stronger flavor.

Pours a well carbonated pinkish straw color with minimal head. Nose is grass and tart cherry. Taste is bready biscuit upfront with a slap of tart cherry on the finish. Medium-light body and medium-high carbonation.
This beer has a bit of an identity crisis. It's taken on the color, carbonation, and ABV of a flavored gose but has the body and nose of a pale wheat. While an interesting drink, it is only 50% committed to each category so it's difficult to give it a fair rating.

DATE: September 23, 2017.. OCCASION: big soccer Saturday finishes with scouts and PSU/Iowa... GLASSWARE: Weihenstephaner weizen glass... pours a bright golden bosy with reasonable effervescence... head is thick, two-fingered, and snow white... lacing arches up and over the cloud... cherry is relevant but not impactful... more immediate is creamy yeasts that alerts the nose to its wheat backbone... floral notes suggest hops are mingling in this... body is creamy, lively, and crisp... refreshing and light in its ABV... the cherry is subtle--and not a bad thing, given the softening of the wheat... flower and hop meld with the tartness to create a pleasant, softened profile... nothing I would run to, but a solid fruit beer that I would not refuse if given...

Weak. Flat. No taste. No mouth feel. Not really anything to like. This is the first beer from Ballast Point that has really disappointed.

Ballast Point Brewing Co. "Sea Rose Tart Cherry Wheat Ale"
12 fl. oz brown glass bottle, production coded but without freshness dating (Feb 14 2017, and sampled on Mar 27 2017)
$2.29 @ Total Wine & More, Cherry Hill, NJ

Notes via stream of consciousness: Well I'm not a fan of pink beers, but this looks pretty good. It's a clear, kind of "blush wine" pink beneath a short head of pink foam. As I'd expected given the term "tart" on the label, the head dropped quite quickly. Only tiny spots of lacing are left behind, but that's fairly common for a sour beer. I wonder how "tart" or sour it is? I don't pick up what I usually consider as "tart" or "sour" in the nose, nor is it really fruity. It smells like light malt with just an edge of fruitiness. OK let's see... fairly tart, slightly fruity, and then a touch sweetish with malt in the finish. Let me try another sip... yes, the same. The fruit is cherry-like, and delicate, and there's a bit of a perfumey character to it as well. I don't get the pomegranite, nor the wheat, really. There's a touch of wheat in the finish but it doesn't stand out like it does in a Bavarian hefeweizen. Overall it's a very delicate beer though, so that makes sense. 4% alcohol, light bodied, moderately carbonated, and delicately fruity - it's almost like a blush wine spritzer, and I could see it fitting right in with any occasion where that would be appropriate. I'd originally thought that it might be good for a day out at sea fishing, probably inspired by the label, but that wouldn't work, it's just too light flavored. It'd be refreshing, but it still has that alcohol to it, and for that 4% I'd rather have a fuller flavored beer. I hate to say it because it sounds sexist, and I guess it is, but it really seems like much more of a woman's beer.

Poured from a 12 OZ bottle into a pint glass. The appearance is a semi-clear golden color with a small white head. The aroma is mild tart hops . A slightly above average beer. very sessionable.

Pours an effervescent bronze with 1 finger of cream colored head. Dissapointing head retention

S: Tart wheat & cherry

T: Follows the nose, a little dryness up front. More of the same as this warms, some tartness too, cherry fades a bit. Finishes tart with a little cherry & a little dry

MF: Light body, moderate carbonation

Drinks easy, but nothing special. Glad I just bought a single...
