We partnered with our friends at High West® Distillery to create a barrel-aged version of Ballast Point Victory at Sea, our award-winning Imperial Porter with cold-steeped coffee and vanilla. From a blend of Ballast Point Victory at Sea aged in High West’s own bourbon & rye whiskey oak casks, new layers of complexity emerge with notes of soft caramel and smoky oak over a dark chocolate and roasted almond body. 12 ounce bottle, 2017 vintage. Served in a snifter, the beer pours dark brown/black with about an inch and a half tan head that stuck around a while. There's also a lot of lacing. Aroma is nice, the brew smells like coffee, chocolate, vanilla, whiskey, and some molasses. I think the taste is pretty much like the aroma, with coffee, vanilla, whiskey, chocolate, roasted malt, caramel and oak flavors. I think it's a sweeter tasting brew, but there's a bit of bite from the whiskey. Mouthfeel/body is medium/full, it's slick and smooth with a moderate amount of carbonation. I've always liked Victory at Sea and I think this barrel aged version is good too! Definitely worth buying, I know I'd like to try this again in the future.

Poured on draft at HQ Gastropub.

Nice pitch black pour with a quarter inch of froth tan head. Lace is heavy and sluggish around the Chimay chalice Glass it was poured into.

The nose on this is fire. Tons of marshmallow vanilla goodness, fudge, and subtle dark roast coffee. Hints of oakey barrel but no apparent booziness. So good.

Getting lots more of that coffee and oak in the flavors. Th fudge and vanilla are pushed to the back, but the contrast between nose and flavor are nice, and work well together.

Mouthfeel is good for a porter. Medium weight, pretty high carb, and not too much stickiness in the finish. Nice warmth as it goes down.

Finally cracking this open!

And hot damn, this aroma reveal intense vanilla qualities. Coffee has been put on the back burner a bit, which also makes the vanilla seem less 'bitter' (my only real niggle with the base version). Dark chocolate, brown sugar, and touches of roast also appear - and hell, so does a bit of coffee at the end of the day. Some of the oak qualities seem to be missing here. This is really setting up to be a rich and decadent dessert beer, though it should be said the flavor doesn't quite match up. Still, these barrels do a great job of amplifying the vanilla flavors near middle, after notes of brown sugar and dark chocolate open it up. Some oak shows up - more than what the nose suggested - though it never quite makes center stage like the vanilla does. Some spicy rye qualities are also duly noted. My main niggle with this is in the body...or, the lack of body. This one is just too thin. And the thin body seems to draw out the booze more. Texture-wise, it errs towards being slick rather than creamy. It's relatively easy to drink for 12%. This adds some great elements to the base, but takes away some of the things that made Victory at Sea a great beer in the first place. Ultimately, it doesn't quite measure up. I still reckon it's worth trying.

3.55/5: Solid, but I prefer non-BA Victory at Sea
