Notes / Commercial Description:
We partnered with our friends at High West® Distillery to create a barrel-aged version of Ballast Point Victory at Sea, our award-winning Imperial Porter with cold-steeped coffee and vanilla. From a blend of Ballast Point Victory at Sea aged in High West’s own bourbon & rye whiskey oak casks, new layers of complexity emerge with notes of soft caramel and smoky oak over a dark chocolate and roasted almond body. High West crafts delicious and distinctive whiskeys to honor the American West, making it the perfect pairing with our signature San Diego-born porter.

12 ounce bottle into snifter, bottled on 11/7/2017. Pours opaque dark brown/black color with a 1-2 finger dense and rocky khaki head with awesome retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Nice dense soapy lacing clings around the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation. Fantastic appearance. Aromas of big milk/dark chocolate, nutty coffee, vanilla, cream, caramel, brown sugar, marshmallow, toffee, fudge, bourbon, rye whiskey, coconut, toasted oak, and dark/brown bread; with light notes of molasses, raisins, smoke, and roast/toast/oaky earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity or dark/roast/bready malts, vanilla, coffee, and rye/bourbon barrel notes; with great strength. Taste of huge milk/dark chocolate, nutty coffee, vanilla, cream, caramel, brown sugar, marshmallow, toffee, fudge, bourbon, rye whiskey, coconut, toasted oak, and dark/brown bread; with light notes of molasses, raisins, smoke, and roast/toast/oaky earthiness. Very mild roast/char bitterness and bourbon/rye/oak spiciness on the finish. Lingering notes of milk/dark chocolate, nutty coffee, vanilla, cream, caramel, brown sugar, marshmallow, toffee, fudge, bourbon, rye whiskey, coconut, toasted oak, dark/brown bread, light molasses/smoke, and roast/toast/oaky earthiness on the finish for a while. Amazing complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/roast/bready malts, vanilla, coffee, and rye/bourbon barrel flavors; with an awesome roasted bitter/sweet and rye/bourbon/oak spiciness balance; with zero cloying/acrid flavors after the finish. Light-medium carbonation and fairly full body; with a very smooth, creamy, silky, velvety, and rich mouthfeel that is fantastic. Minimal chalky roast, oak tannins, or dryness. Mildly warming alcohol for 12%, with zero barrel booziness lingering after the finish. Overall this is an amazing barrel aged imperial porter! All around incredible complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/roast/bready malts, vanilla, coffee, and rye/bourbon barrel flavors; insanely smooth and dangerously easy to sip on for the huge ABV. Extremely rich porter malt complexity and balanced vanilla/coffee flavors; with perfect barrel integration. Never boozy, tannic, or drying. Not overly roasty or bitter on malts/hops. A highly amazing offering, and spot on style example. One of the smoothest BBA beers I have had.

Picked up a four-pack from the Craft Beer Quick Stop 11-19-2017 for $14.99. Bottled on 10-23-2017.

Beer poured dark brown with a very nice tan head with the original pour.

Nose was awesome, nice trace of bourbon and vanilla along with dark chocolate and a touch of coffee.

Taste follows the nose with dark chocolate and coffee are the dominant flavors with the bourbon and vanilla being secondary but a well played addition.

Mouthfeel is medium to full bodied and very smooth.

Overall this is a nice addition to what is a wonderful base beer! Glad i have three more to enjoy!

2017 Bottle. Dark chocolate, cocoa, toasted coconut and vanilla. Underlying roasted malt profile. Medium to light bodied. Drier, oaky finish. Lower sweetness. A bit boozy. Overall muted flavor. Eh. It's alright, but not that good.

this is really phenomenal, a great use of barrels to enhance an already fantastic brew, this is one of the best they make, and with the high west barrels, its really next level, even more whiskey and wood forward than the large format bourbon barrel aged edition they have previously released. they use bourbon and rye barrels apparently, and the earthy spice of the rye helps cut some of the sweetness for me thats strong in both the base beer and the whiskey, its a cool dark side to the sweeter, richer, corny and vanilla heavy bourbon. i get molasses and maple notes along with the sweet oak and the bitter char, strong coffee notes, and a definite overdose of vanilla, but as desserty as it is, the vanilla is real and appealing to me, natural despite being intense. deep bitter cocoa, dark chocolate, rich caramel and vanilla and cream soda, and really god whiskey, very mature, all super well integrated, just fabulously flavorful and refined, leagues better than most of these in overall quality, and still showcasing the base beer, its not all the high west barrels. i had this side by side with a number of other notable barrel aged stouts, and this one really stood out! world class example of the style, maybe the best beer ive had from ballast point...

2017 bottle poured into a tulip glass. Wonderful nose! Vanilla, dark chocolate, this is by far the best variant of Victory At Sea!

L. Black with a big frothy tan head which recedes to a few bubbly patches and leaves a wicked lacing.
S. Wow. Smells of dessert. Big chocolate and vanilla, world-class brownies, caramel, cookie dough, sweet bourbon.
T. Vanilla, sweet chocolate, dark roasted malts, oaky bourbon, caramely bourbon, vanilla again, cookie dough starts happening as it warms, spicy/slightly boozy in the end with coffee, cocoa, and vanilla.
F. Rich, slick, a bit dry in the end, learning towards a full body.
O. This is pretty intense, man. Deliciously sweet aroma, similar flavors but more balanced there. One 12 oz bottle is plenty in a sitting, but I would certainly have it again. Cheers, peoples ! ! !

This is a solid bourbon barrel aged stout, exemplary of many others in this genre. Smells great - espresso is most notable. Pours dark with medium head. It's a great beer, I love it. Taste notes: bourbon, espresso, light coconut. Body is a little thin. Had I not tried Lagunitas Willettized coffee stout, I would've given this one a higher mark. While this beer is good, price point is a tad high and it can use a bit more richness in the body.
