Notes / Commercial Description:
We partnered with our friends at High West® Distillery to create a barrel-aged version of Ballast Point Victory at Sea, our award-winning Imperial Porter with cold-steeped coffee and vanilla. From a blend of Ballast Point Victory at Sea aged in High West’s own bourbon & rye whiskey oak casks, new layers of complexity emerge with notes of soft caramel and smoky oak over a dark chocolate and roasted almond body. High West crafts delicious and distinctive whiskeys to honor the American West, making it the perfect pairing with our signature San Diego-born porter.

A great porter for the winter season. The bourbon flavor really shines through and it only adds to the existing notes. Complex but not overwhelming, job well done Ballast Point.

Really pumped to have had this a few times now and seeing it available in four packs.

A- The 12oz bottle pours into a snifter with a midnight black body and a dark tan cocoa colored cap that peaks at one finger high. Good head retention. The lacing is thin but it covers a large surface area with sheets following the beer down the glass.

S- The stout and the barrel are both massive in the aroma and you can get a sniff of it from far away from the glass as this one lets off a very strong smell. Between the base beer and the barrel the vanilla character is stunning and really is the centerpiece of the beer with cocoa, whiskey and roasted malts right there alongside it. Hints of coffee, smoke, caramel and slight oak as well. Dessert in a glass.

T- The barrel gains some strength compared to the aroma but that is in no way a bad thing as a bit more oak and whiskey character hit the taste buds with some alcohol character.. High West is great and it really does marry the Victory at Sea base beer very nicely. The cocoa also picks up with cocoa powder and milk chocolate notes coming to mind and if anything the beer feels more balanced here with the vanilla coming down just a bit. Vanilla, cocoa, coffee and whiskey. The coffee comes of as a clean dark roast near espresso blend. Hints of dark fruits, toasted oak, burnt barley, acrid bitterness, toasted wood, almonds, nuts and caramel in here too.

MF- Heavy body with a medium-high level of carbonation. The texture is silky smooth and creamy but not quite chewy. The booze definitely cuts into the beer's heft and it ends rather warm.

An all time great porter gets the barrel treatment it deserves. The in-your-face High West Bourbon character balances very nicely with the vanilla, cocoa and coffee from the base beer. Glad this came in a four pack as this will be one to savor throughout the winter.

12oz bottle.

Pours opaque black with a minimal head or retention. Chocolate, espresso, bourbon, and vanilla in the nose. Full bodied with a creamy mouthfeel. Bakers chocolate, Oreo shells. vanilla, and whiskey on the palate. Finishes warming with plenty of rich Porter character.

Great beer and not too heavy on the booziness.

Growler into pint glass. Pours a very dark, almost opaque brown with a brief tan head. Initial impression is dark and sweet chocolate, bourbon, coffee, dark fruits, and vanilla. Extremely complex. Mouthfeel is rich and creamy, approaching a stout. Carbonation is quite light. Slight alcohol warmimg. Finish is slightly sweet bourbon and vanilla. Flavors gain definition and change their order of prominence as it warms.
This is really good. Highly recommended!

Black colored beer that is almost light proof with a tall brown colored head.

Very aromatic even from a distance. Intense whiskey scents. Off the charts scents of vanilla and oak. Good scent of whiskey without being boozy. Chocolate and caramel in equal amounts. Scents of coconut and almonds. The scent is similar to German chocolate cake splashed with whiskey.

Starts out mildly sweet and savory with a big vanilla taste and a German chocolate cake finish. Sweet but not over powering with a taste of salt on the tongue. Whiskey, chocolate and coconut are the strongest flavors. Medium level of bitterness. Overall it is stout and whiskey.

Mouthfeel is good.

Overall tasty. Still think I would rather have the whiskey shot and the beer chaser.

Whoah! Well done!
Smells of chocolate coffee, molasses, and caramel
Pours put black with a 1 inch light brown head
Taste comes across as smoky, coffee with notes of heavy molasses and finishes of cherry! And tobacco!
This is a full bodied beer . Very smooth with a touch of boozy warmth .

L — Pours a very dark brown (almost black) body with a finger of tan head produced with moderate pour. Good retention and lacing
S — Fudgy chocolate, coffee syrup, vanilla, maple, coconut, oak, hint of whisky heat. Quite decadent
T — Wet bourbon and rye character comes through strong, along with bakers chocolate, coffee syrup, brown sugar, herbal hoppiness, roast, and light vanillin notes
F — Medium+ mouthfeel, medium- carb. Decent chocolatey roastiness on the finish. Much fuller than regular Victory at Sea
O — A nice improvement to a porter that I feel is somewhat overrated.

Amazing beer. Look is dark, rich, and has a great amount of foam and head retention. Smell is of bourbon and straight vanilla beans. Rich and chocolatey too. taste is all that and more, plus a strong amount of caramel and cherry and absolutely delicious. Feel is thick and rich and strong. I love it!
