Notes / Commercial Description:
We partnered with our friends at High West® Distillery to create a barrel-aged version of Ballast Point Victory at Sea, our award-winning Imperial Porter with cold-steeped coffee and vanilla. From a blend of Ballast Point Victory at Sea aged in High West’s own bourbon & rye whiskey oak casks, new layers of complexity emerge with notes of soft caramel and smoky oak over a dark chocolate and roasted almond body. High West crafts delicious and distinctive whiskeys to honor the American West, making it the perfect pairing with our signature San Diego-born porter.

I tried this at Ballast Points new Chicago location. It poured an opaque dark with tan head that did not leave much lace. The scent had bourbon and whiskey notes. The taste was nicely balanced and easy to sip. There was a strong bourbon and sweet molasses mix. The mouthfeel was medium in body with good carbonation. Overall its a solid beer.

High West Barrel Aged Victory at Sea
12oz bottle into a tulip
2017 Vintage
Drank several months ago, but review was done live while drinking.

A: Jet black, large light tan head, good retention, pretty good lacing. 4.5

S: Aroma is really fantastic. Roasty, chocolate, vanilla bean, large barrel notes with a rich charred oaky character. 4.75

T: Whoa huge whiskey notes up front. I also get roasted malts, bakers cocoa, very subtle vanilla. 4.5

M/D: Mouthfeel is full bodied but could be a touch thicker. Carbonation higher than I would prefer. ABV is very well masked, and drinkability is good. 4

O: Exceptional beer. I am a big fan of regular Victory at Sea, but the barrel aging adds a whole new layer of depth a and complexity. 4.5

12 oz. bottle poured into a snifter.

Dark brown with a thin off-white head.

Nose: Coffee and vanilla dominate. Subtle bourbon barrel.

Taste: coffee and subtle bourbon. A bit of burnt chocolate on the finish.

Feel: body is pretty light for the style. Medium to high carbonation.

Tasted in a snifter from draft at The Vine on August 18, 2018. A blend of Ballast Point Victory at Sea aged in High West’s own bourbon and rye whiskey oak casks. Layers of complexity emerge with notes of soft caramel and smoky oak over a dark chocolate and roasted almond body. So good.

Outstanding. 2017 batch. Dark, tanning edges, not much in the way of carb/lacing. Smell is roasty coffee and malt, sweet vanilla (perhaps too sweet), mild boozy barrel presence. Taste is divine-mellow roast and a much more subtle vanilla presence with a smooth barrel burn. Easy drinker for a high abv, really thickens and rounds out as it warms. Very sad this is my last one, but I'm thinking this is the prime time to drink it.

12 ounce bottle, 2017 vintage. Served in a snifter, the beer pours dark brown/black with about an inch and a half tan head that stuck around a while. There's also a lot of lacing. Aroma is nice, the brew smells like coffee, chocolate, vanilla, whiskey, and some molasses. I think the taste is pretty much like the aroma, with coffee, vanilla, whiskey, chocolate, roasted malt, caramel and oak flavors. I think it's a sweeter tasting brew, but there's a bit of bite from the whiskey. Mouthfeel/body is medium/full, it's slick and smooth with a moderate amount of carbonation. I've always liked Victory at Sea and I think this barrel aged version is good too! Definitely worth buying, I know I'd like to try this again in the future.
