Notes / Commercial Description:
We partnered with our friends at High West® Distillery to create a barrel-aged version of Ballast Point Victory at Sea, our award-winning Imperial Porter with cold-steeped coffee and vanilla. From a blend of Ballast Point Victory at Sea aged in High West’s own bourbon & rye whiskey oak casks, new layers of complexity emerge with notes of soft caramel and smoky oak over a dark chocolate and roasted almond body. High West crafts delicious and distinctive whiskeys to honor the American West, making it the perfect pairing with our signature San Diego-born porter.

Hangover day from Mostra's anniversary party calls for...High West Victory at Sea! Pours a deep dark brown/black with a tan head that barely lingers. Aroma is deep toasty nuttiness with dates and vanilla...some light coffee as well. Some hot bourbon and rye coming through also. Flavor is hot and a blast of barrel booze to start, but slowly eases. Nice big toast roast from the coffee, and some more vanilla and date. Very nice and bold BA porter, should age gracefully

An interesting experience. Opened at just below cellar temp. Initial aroma was coffee, vanilla, alcohol, and slight coconut. Initial 4 ounces or so were dominated by alcohol and was not a particularly good experience. As it warmed, the smell turned to mostly rich chocolate and vanilla with much less alcohol and coffee, and the taste followed. Much less coffee than the original, not a lot of barrel, but a lot more vanilla and chocolate. Much different beer than the original. Very good, but not as great as the original.

Appearance: A hard pour builds two fingers of tan head with the espresso colored liquid underneath; leggy lacing abounds

Smell: The Rye barrel treatment makes a statement with the coffee quite pronounced, as well; chocolate, caramel, vanilla and, to a lesser extent, Bourbon are also noted

Taste: Dark chocolate, caramel and coffee, in the forefront, with the Rye taking over the mid-palate; after the swallow, the Rye remains pronounced but there are some sweeter Bourbon and vanilla tones in the mix; nicely balanced in the finish; a hint of almond in the aftertaste

Mouthfeel: Full bodied (but could be fuller) with moderate carbonation; some warmth in the gullet

Overall: This is a real treat for Rye lovers but the blend of all the flavors really come together; I suspect this will be outstanding in a year's time

12oz bottle 17293 pours a viscous, almost black, dark brown and barely floats a cocoa colored 1/8in head that disippates quickly and leaves spotted lacing with legs.

Aroma is sweet vanilla, cocoa, and a hint of booze.

Flavors include vanilla, rye, dark chocolate, and booze, and in addition a dark fruit touch, and a little nuttiness as it warms.

Mouthfeel is perfectly medium with a clean finish and leaves just a memory of booze without the heat.

Overall a great format, great label art, great price point, and great beer for football on the tele and snow falling in the window.
