Notes / Commercial Description:
We partnered with our friends at High West® Distillery to create a barrel-aged version of Ballast Point Victory at Sea, our award-winning Imperial Porter with cold-steeped coffee and vanilla. From a blend of Ballast Point Victory at Sea aged in High West’s own bourbon & rye whiskey oak casks, new layers of complexity emerge with notes of soft caramel and smoky oak over a dark chocolate and roasted almond body. High West crafts delicious and distinctive whiskeys to honor the American West, making it the perfect pairing with our signature San Diego-born porter.

Look - This beer pours a very dark brown, though I wouldn't quite say black. When held up to the light you get orangish brown highlights around the edges. It has a nice finger's worth of head that stuck around for a bit.

Smell - The smell is primarily coffee. As I spent some time with it, I got other notes to come through, including vanilla and a toasted Cheerios smell. I get very little booze notes on the nose, and throughout it was mostly the coffee that I smelled.

Taste - This porter is very heavy on the roasted qualities. So often the whiskey barrel aging will take front and center, but not so here. The flavors of the porter here still took center stage. The coffee and vanilla notes dominate, and the whiskey notes take somewhat of a backseat. It also has a slight woodiness and a bit of a burnt quality that attaches to all of the flavors that came through.

Feel - This is creamier than expected, and as far as viscosity goes, it's about halfway between watery and oily. It also had pretty good carbonation that tickled my tongue on each sip.

Overall - I love this stuff. It's very well done, not overly boozy but rather the barrel aging complemented and worked well with what's otherwise a great porter with really good flavor, even if heavy on the roasted flavors.

Pairs Well With - Frozen Charleston Chews . . . holy shit that's a good combo!

Doops brought home some of these for beer night. Thanks, man!

From a bottle into a snifter

APPEARANCE: A clear dark brown pour yields a three finger, medium looking, creamy tan head with excellent retention. Clear black body with higher levels of carbonation. Head slowly fades to a full cap with lots of lacing on the glass. Splotchy wisp remains leaving no real lacing on the glass.

SMELL: Lots of vanilla and coconut, milk chocolate, toffee, oak and bourbon on the nose.

TASTE: Bourbon, oak, alcohol and wood at the swallow. Very woody and boozy. Caramel and toffee as well. Bold and boozy finish of bourbon, oak, vanilla, coconut, toffee and caramel sweetness lingering on the palate. Really boozy and woody.

PALATE: Medium-lighter body with higher levels of carbonation. Creamy enough on the palate, goes down fine and finishes a bit drier on the palate.

OVERALL: Meh. Not quite up to par. I’ve had a few of these Victory at Seas and this one is certainly on the woodier, boozier side of the spectrum. Pretty one dimensional, really. It’s a little lighter and more carbonated for the style as well. Fun to try but not really worth the price of admission. Thanks again, doops!

Pours near-black with two fingers of tan head that fade into a ring.

The nose is brownie batter, bourbon, and wood.

The taste mostly follows. Bourbon and fudge. This is big and definitely every bit of 12% alcohol. Some booze, barrel, and bitterness on the backend.

Overall, a bit intense to my palate but objectively good.

Was looking forward to this one, but was let down by an astringent, almost chemical vanilla aftertaste that came through occasionally. Will revisit review on the next bottle. The base porter, and coffee, and barrel were all right on but the vanilla came on too harsh.

Black with ruby edges poured at 54 degrees; rocky tan foam that becomes fast fizzy micro bubbles; some cap retention of these bubbles, good clarity underneath; solid ring; moderately heavy lacing; thin legs upon swirl. Aromas of bourbon, chocolate, vanilla and oak. Rye/bourbon taste up front with chocolate right behind; bitter roast malt; some Vanilla and oak hiding; coffee now an afterthought; wooden/rye finish. Dry wooden tongue coating; medium carbonation; medium feel; lite warmth; a little thin for a 12% porter. Overall the barrel notes/linger are too drying for me and distract from the other flavors; the coffee has fallen off and the rye is too dominant at this time; otherwise an excellent stout and will enjoy drinking more.
