White Wine Barrel Aged Sour WenchWhite Wine Barrel Aged Sour Wench
Notes: After resting in both chardonnay and sauvignon blanc barrels for over six months, our Sour Wench emerges with aromas of freshly sliced white peach, citrus, woody oak tannins and rich vanilla. Within every sip you’ll taste hints of crushed berries and ripe apricots with a deliciously buttery smoothness from the chardonnay barrels, while finishing dry from the sauvignon blanc on the back. Easy-drinking for a barrel-aged beer, it’s tart, refreshing, and delightfully smooth.

L: Poured from a bottle to a snifter glass. Had a deep, almost ruby red color and a hazy consistency. There was a half inch of foamy / fizzy head that lasted a below average amount of time. Decent lacing.

S: A very enticing aroma of white wine, yeast, some other berries, and vanilla.

T: Tasted of a tinge of funky yeast (not as prevalent), a bit of vanilla, a whole lot of the white wine (and its barrel), some blackberry notes, a hint of raspberry, and cherries as well. One of the more interesting wild ale flavors I've tried recently. The white wine adds a unique dimension and it blends well with the berries. Very tasty.

F: A highly-carbonated beer with a lively finish. Medium-bodied.

O: A well made, surprisingly easy to drink beer. Definitely drinkable.

Standout is its silky, soft and smooth mouthfeel. No harsh acidic edges. Creamy. Lovely

Moderate to vigorous pour yields a 1/2 inch, extremely light pink head over a red wine colored body. Nose of blackberries and white grape. Taste of blackberries and white wine with a very nice wine-like finish. Beautiful! Nice feel and overall, this is going great paired with my baked salmon. Cheers!

Color much darker than it's predecessor with little to no head. Smells more of wine barrel than the standard wench berry presence is still as good. Taste is more sour than standard remember more blackberries in the taste. In a way more like a standard Berliner now which is quite good. Body is smooth as always drinks like a 5% beer but it's 7%.

Overall wine barrel aging has done pretty good to this beer not sure it's worth over 4 bucks a bottle but I may get it again.

2018 Vintage.
12 oz bottle poured into a wide mouth tulip.

Appearance
Ruby red / garnet. Good clarity. Short head fizzles out quickly.

Nose
Cabernet Sauvignon, charred oak bourbon, blackberry, raspberry, and toffee.

Taste
Tastes more like red wine than white; a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Pinot Noir. Charred oak, tannic, and slight bourbon. Blackberry jam, raspberry puree, and blackcurrant. Has a modest lactic sourness that doesn't come off cheap like a kettle sour.

Mouthfeel
Medium bodied, crisp, moderately sour, heartburn, off-dry, and "jammy."

Overall
Excellent wine barrel selection and aging. Quite a nice sour that you can pick up in a 12 oz bottle format.

12 ounce bottle into tulip glass, bottled on 8/15/2018. Pours slightly hazy ruby reddish orange color with a 1 finger fairly dense and fluffy light pink head with good retention, that reduces to a thin lace cap that lingers. Light spotty soapy lacing clings on the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of big sour/tart/tangy blackberries, fruit skin/seed, raspberry, cherry, plum, apricot, lemon, lime, orange, red/green apple, currant, red/white wine, oak, hay, straw, grass, wheat, cracker, and biscuit; with light notes of oaken vanilla, musty/lacto funk, and yeast earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of fruity/acidic yeast, blackberries, white wine barrels, and moderate pale/wheat malt notes; with great strength. Taste of big sour/tart/tangy blackberries, fruit skin/seed, raspberry, cherry, plum, apricot, lemon, lime, orange, red/green apple, currant, red/white wine, oak, hay, straw, grass, wheat, cracker, and biscuit; with light notes of oaken vanilla, musty/lacto funk, and yeast earthiness. Light-moderate fruity/lactic tartness, fruit/wine tang, and light oak spiciness on the finish. Lingering notes of tart/tangy blackberries, fruit skin/seed, raspberry, cherry, plum, apricot, lemon, lime, orange, red/green apple, currant, red/white wine, oak, hay, straw, grass, wheat, cracker, biscuit, light vanilla/funk, and yeast earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Fantastic complexity, robustness, and balance of fruity/acidic yeast, blackberries, white wine barrels, and moderate pale/wheat malt flavors; with an awesome malt/tartness and tangy fruit/wine balance; with no puckering/astringent flavors after the finish. Light-moderate increasing dryness from tartness and tangy fruit/wine. Medium carbonation and body; with a very smooth, moderately bready/grainy/acidic/tangy, fairly crisp, and lightly tannic balanced mouthfeel that is fantastic. Zero warming alcohol for 7.1%. Overall this is a fantastic fruited sour! All around outstanding complexity, robustness, and balance of fruity/acidic yeast, blackberries, white wine barrels, and moderate pale/wheat malt flavors; very smooth and fairly crisp/refreshing to drink with the mellowly acidic/tangy/tannic/drying finish, not overly lactic. Awesome balance of jammy berries, Lacto complexity, and white wine barrels; with perfectly balanced pale/wheat malts against acidity. A highly enjoyable offering, and very impressive style example for only being a kettle soured.

Super nice ale, dark purple-red-brown colored... Brewed with blackberries and aged in chadonnay and sauvignon barrels... Delightfully dry and wine-like with some tartness and a mild sweetness of berry nestled in there... Light and refreshing but with a hint of dank and oaky tannic mustiness... No visible bottling date...

Thanks Kristen for the tech week treat, now that it's open I can really enjoy this.

A: Medium brown in color, with a light tan head.

S: Light sour notes come first, followed by white wine, brown sugar, raspberry jam and oak. Quite a bouquet.

T: Tart berries, wine, and oak. A nice balance of sour and sweet with flavors that are complex and interesting.

M: Light body with moderate to high carbonation. Lively and dry.

O: Overall a pretty fine sour beer. I'm a little surprised by this one.
