Poured on-tap at Ballast Point in San Diego, Calif. Reviewed from notes.

A- Creamy finger width head. Longer retention. Fluffy lacing.

S- Citrusy hops, ginger is heavy, some soapiness, grapefruit, light crisp smells.

T- Some bitter hops, but the ginger comes up and bites in the end. Still very subtle flavor.

M- Smooth and creamy feel with a bite of carbonation.

O- The ginger isn't strong, but it is present. I feel this could have been done better.

Pours an effervescent amber with 3+ fingers of beige colored head. Stellar head retention & lacing

S: A little ginger, not much else

T: A little ginger & grapefruit up front. Ginger picks as this warms, a little pine & grapefruit & a little dryness. Finishes with piney bitterness, ginger, some cakey malt & dryness

MF: Medium body with firm carbonation, nice balance

Very drinkable, but not life changing

An interesting brew combo. A straight forward West Coast IPA coupled with a ginger tea that was added at secondary fermentation.

A-Deep golden yellow with a medium white head. Headed lasted and left behind decent lace.

S-Wow! Sharp ginger spice and citrusy hops duke it out in my nose to declare a winner!

T-More of the same! A great combination of hop and ginger flavours. I really like the combination. Enough caramel malt backbone to support of the spicy flavours.

M-Medium body with a lovely, lingering spicy finish.

D-Man do I like this! Along with Big Eye, Dorado and Sculpin can this place make a bad IPA?I don't think so! This is so interesting and damn good it has inspired me to try this combo on the homebrewing level at some point.

I love most Ballast Point offerings, but this is the exception. I love ginger, but this brew didn't cut it.
Poured out of a non-dated 22oz bomber, it gets it's highest rating on the Look, with a thick, soapy head.
The smell is the worst rating, coming somewhere between wet latex gloves and moldy pine cones.
The taste is tolerable, since the malt backbone holds up to the sting of the ginger and spicy hops.
The feel is less pleasant, with a steely finish. This would only pare well with a strong sushi or a sardine sandwich with spicy mustard.

Loved It! Just a chef who loves ginger and got his world rocked by this great balance speaking here, but.. Hell yes ginger and hops work together incredibly!

I love regular big eye. But to me this is reminiscent of cleaning solution or something. It's not terrible, but the ginger adds a weird angle that just doesn't do the base beers glory justice.

Poured from a 22 oz. bottle into a chalice.

Appearance: Pours a slightly hazy amber orange with a moderate amount of bubbles. Solid finger of off white head which settles into a thin patchy layer.

Smell: A juicy and earthy hop forward aroma with a scent of ginger and citrus hops. Big upfront scent of ginger spicing. Citrus hops with hints of grapefruit, orange peel, mango, tangerine, melon, pineapple, and lemon. Earthy and herbal hops with hints of pine resin, cannabis, and pepper like spice. Background malt hints of caramel, grains, and cracker along with yeast. A pretty nice aroma.

Taste: Like it smells, a juicy and spicy hop driven taste with notes of ginger and citrus fruit. Upfront spice presence of ginger along with some pepper. Ripe and bitter citrus hop notes of orange peel, grapefruit, mango, pineapple, tangerine, melon, and lemon. Earthy and herbal hop notes of pine resin and grass. Backing malt notes of caramel, cracker, grains, and yeast. A very good hoppy and spicy taste.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied with a moderate amount of carbonation. Juicy, spicy, and oily with a drying finish.

Overall: A pretty good twist on a very good West Coast IPA. The ginger flavor is strong but it doesn't overwhelm the ripe and bitter citrus hop flavors.

On tap at Lord Hobo. Served in a pint glass. Hazy orange. Citrus and tropical hop aroma. Taste is strong bright tropical citrus hops. Pale malt sweetness. Grassy bitter finish and a lightly toasty malt flavor. Medium body. Enjoyable.

Sushi beer to a tee? Super natural tasting vein of ginger running throughout this one. Big Eye is a bit overlooked due to all the Sculpin love, but it's a good beer in its own right, and the ginger addition pairs nicely indeed.
