Notes / Commercial Description:
Our Victory at Sea Imperial Porter is a bold, smooth brew with just the right amount of sweetness. We infused this robust porter with whole vanilla beans and San Diego’s own Caffe Calabria coffee beans. The subtle roasted notes and minimal acidity of the cold brewed coffee, balances perfectly with the sweet caramel undertones of the malt, creating a winning combination for your palate.

Fantastic coffee flavor, the vanilla is either very subtle or I just can't pick it up, which is fine because I don't think it's even needed. Awesome Porter, one of my new favorites.

Big oily roasted coffee flavor. Hints of vanilla are mild. Very drinkable. Head is thin but holds to side of glass well. Love it.

Pours a rich looking dark brown with a massive creamy light brown head that spilled over. (My bad. I poured a little too fast) Thick foamy lacing persists. Great complex aroma of dark sugars, roasted malts, coffee, caramel, raisins and nut cake. Taste of sweet roasted malts with a slightly dry bitter sweet and slight alcohol finish. As the bottle indicates, other strong flavors are coffee and vanilla extract. Feel is full bodied, hearty and robust. Minimal carbonation helps keep the flavors intact and makes this a great brew to warm you in the winter and/or drink with dessert. A thoroughly enjoyable brew and one of my favorite examples of porter!

Poured from 12 oz bottle into snifter
Dated 12/30/14

A Runny black with some head if poured aggressively, little head if poured slowly (I poured two!). No transparency, of course. Some brief lacing when tumbled a bit. Probably a little sticky.

S Espresso, chocolate milk, toffee, vanilla. A blitz of spices; clove, nutmeg, mint, and cinnamon. A cornucopia of aroma!

T Dark chocolate and roasted coffee. Very potent this. Vanilla bean, burnt sugar, mocha, and roasted malts. Grand flavor!

M Way more full than the pour would indicate. Very rich. Velvety and smooth, leaves a bitter follow.

O So good! The flavors mesh perfectly. You want a coffee stout/porter? This is it. You want a smooth sweet stout/porter? Yep. You want a big rich, high ABV impeccably crafted brew? This it. Top notch brew by Ballast Point!

Alcohol content too high for a porter. Drinkability suffers because of this. The vanilla is lost; I didn't sense much if it here at all because it was full of roasty coffee and bitter hops. High IBUs are not necessary when you also have bitter coffee presence that is not tamed by a balancing sweetness. Needs less alcohol, more body, less hops, more vanilla, and some sort of balance so you don't just get a blast of bitterness from the coffee and hops.

I'm picky as hell so take the above advice with a grain of salt. I enjoyed this beer. A lot. Just being brutally honest with this review. The only reason it will not be a repeat buy is the cost at $15 for a sixer. It was truly one of the best porters I've ever had. I just wish the flaws mentioned were worked on.
