Previously known as Wahoo Wheat Ale
A fresh, unfiltered brew perfect for lazy summer days.
Our Wahoo White is brewed with unfiltered, un-malted wheat and oats that give it a distinctive cloudy complexity. True to the Belgian tradition, this Witbier boasts a refreshing, citrusy flavor thanks to the orange peel and coriander we add to the boil. This makes Wahoo an ideal beer for year-round beach weather.

Here's the day match of the Second Unorganized Invitational, a Belgian wheat ale from Ballast Point. I love a good witbier, and I have expectations this will meet that criteria. On to the beer:
It pours like fizzy, straw colored water into my weizen glass with zero head. Uh oh. But it sure does smell nice. It tastes fine too, although there's very little carbonation in the body. Feels almost like seltzer water. The lack of carbonation has wrecked a potentially good brew. Of what there is, there's some citrus peel, the coriandor, and a subtle bite of nutty yeast. Force carbonate the poor guy if you have too. (Update: Under further review, it's more acceptable to me. Taste and mouthfeel get a +0.5 bump.)
We still have one beer left in the Second Unorganizied Invite, which will end tonight, and then we'll reveal the winner of this invite.

355 ml bottle, Cardinal Pub & Bar, Stavanger. ABV is 4.5%. Hazy pale yellow colour, low white head. Strong aroma of banana, bubblegum, cloves and coriander. Soft mouthfeel. The wheaty flavour is mid between dry and sweet, again with notes of banana, cloves and coriander, also some citrus. Minimal hops. Refreshing and nice to drink.

Poured from a bottle into a pint glass. Pours semi cloudy yellow with a tiny white head. Smells of sweet wheat and slight orange. Tastes of sweet wheat and slight citrus, especially orange. Beer is light bodied and very easy drinking, good carbonation, very refreshing. Overall, an above average beer.

Ballast Point Brewing Co. "Wahoo Wheat"
12 fl. oz. brown glass bottle, coded "WH 206 17124 12:35"

Notes via stream of consciousness: It's amazing the number of beers I've tasted before and never reviewed; although you can't let that get in the way of enjoying yourself so sometimes you just have to put the reviews aside. This one, however, is one I'm quite familiar with, so I must have assume I'd already reviewed it. The appearance is not that great, and the head drops quickly and the lacing is OK but nothing more, but the aroma is right on for the style: lemony-orange, wheat, and some dull coriander - you know it's a witbier without even tasting it. The flavor follows, and although it's a bit sweetish that's OK, and the combination of wheaty malt and lemony citrus is quite nice, and some mildly phenolic yeast adds another level of depth to it (is there a hint of banana in there as well?). A mild bitterness helps to balance it, less than 20 IBUs for sure, but with the little bit of coriander and the citrus, and I think some peppery notes from the yeast, it finishes mainly dry as some of the malt steadily erodes - you don't want it to finish too quick, or too spicy, so it works just fine as it is. It's just a satisfying and refreshing beer, and thinking about it I've probably had 4 times as many 22 oz. bottles of this as I have 12 ouncers, all by myself! It's medium-light in body and gently effervescent. Whoops, I see now that the 22 oz. bottles were actually "Wahoo Wheat Beer" so I take that part back. Kind of, I'm pretty sure it was the same beer. But what about style? How does it stack up against the Belgian-style witbier guidelines? Pretty well I think. All of the ingredients, including the yeast are clear, and it's nicely balanced and highly drinkable. Could it be better? Yes, but there are beers from Belgium that could be better too. I'll take this as it is. It's great for a summer day, and yet it also works all year long. Nicely done!

I bought this off the Binny's single shelf. It poured a slightly hazy orangish with no head and no lace. The scent is weak wit. The taste was nicely balanced and easy to drink. The mouthfeel was lighter in body with good carbonation. Overall it's ok.
