Notes / Commercial Description:
Previously known as Wahoo Wheat Ale

A fresh, unfiltered brew perfect for lazy summer days.
Our Wahoo White is brewed with unfiltered, un-malted wheat and oats that give it a distinctive cloudy complexity. True to the Belgian tradition, this Witbier boasts a refreshing, citrusy flavor thanks to the orange peel and coriander we add to the boil. This makes Wahoo an ideal beer for year-round beach weather.

Poured a cloudy golden body with a thick, foamy white head that slowly receded. Overall impression of appearance is of a perfectly on-point witbier. Scents of coriander, spicy clove and white pepper-like phenols at light levels in the background, moderate amounts of bright orange peel, light sweet honey, a balanced malt character that is softly sweet with notes of grainy wheat and a nice floral quality. Overall impression of aroma is of a well balanced, nicely done witbier that is very true to style and quite appealing. Flavor begins lightly sweet, with a pleasant soft malt quality, balanced with notes of sweet, zesty orange, light vanilla, spicy coriander and phenolic flavors of clove and white pepper. Middle is lightly tart, with notes of tangy wheat and orange balancing with spicy coriander, clove and peppery flavors. Finish is lightly dry with notes of grainy and tangy wheat, spicy notes of coriander, clove and delicate white pepper, along with tangy orange zest and hints of vanilla. Aftertaste is grainy, bready wheat malt, clove, coriander and white pepper. Overall impression of flavor is of a very good witbier that has all the typical flavors of the style present and balanced nicely. A good example of the style. Mouthfeel is medium-light bodied with high, effervescent carbonation and a creamy feel that finishes dry. Overall impression of mouthfeel is of a perfect witbier. Overall this is a fantastic witbier, that unlike so many American examples excels at representing what the style should be in aroma, flavor and mouthfeel.

Look: about a half finger head with minimal lacing. color is a light straw yellow. with a good amount of carbonation floating to the top.

Smell: I found the smell sweet almost bubblegum with mild clove as well.

Taste: Pretty light in the flavor department. I get a little clove/spice up front but nothing like a hoegaarden or weihenstephaner. finishes with maybe a little bit of yeast. overall flavor is pretty underwhelming. Not getting any citrus or banana profiles here.

Feel: mouth feel is decent, good amount of carbonation and finishes wet. definitely drinkable, but feels kind of thin.

Overall: Witbiers being one of my favorite styles that really got me started in craft beers, I feel i have a fair share of experience with what a good witbier should be. unfortunately, this one is pretty lackluster. Its not necessarily bad, but nothing about it really stands out either. pretty mediocre across the board. I feel like they tried to play it safe on this one, but maybe played it a little TOO safe. It feels thin on the mouth, no bready bite to it. it also lacks any real clove/banana punch that ive come to expect and love from the style. There are better options out there for a good white beer.

Poured from a 12oz. bottle into a Shock Top Belgian White beer glass.

The color is a cloudy yellow with some orange highlights. There is a finger of foamy white head on the top of this beer with some thick lacing left on the glass.

The smell is wheaty as expected, with a slight orange peel and some slight clove in the background. There is a bready aroma that smells like fresh white bread waiting to be buttered.

The taste is sweet with a Belgian candy sugar flavor. There is a slight bubblegum flavor here that walks along a line with a wheat flavor that melds well into a juicy fruit flavor that gives off hints of banana and more clove. There is also a tease of lemon zest in the background that hides on the edges of the sweetness here.

The feel of this beer is light bodied and pretty darn drinkable and pretty pleasant. The smooth body goes down easy and really makes for a refreshing beer.

12 oz bottle into a teku.

Appearance: Pours a hazy golden color. The head is a finger high, and white in shade. Retention is quite unimpressive. On the other hand, a nice, splotchy ring of lacing sticks to the glass. (3)

Smell: Well...it smells like a wheat beer. Lots of wheat comes through, along with a bit of coriander (make that a lot) and orange peel. Yep, exactly what I expected, no more, no less. (3)

Taste: It tastes like an average witbier to me. It's a little heavier in coriander than most, but otherwise it has the typical melange of wheat and orange peel flavors. There just isn't thing here that really stands out. (2.75)

Mouthfeel: This starts off fairly light, but it gets heavier and sweeter with each concurrent sip. It isn't that easy to drink for a witbier, due to how heavily it lingers on the palate. Carbonation is a bit low for the style. (2.75)

Overall: It's good to try a Ballast Point beer that isn't a Sculpin variant or Victory at Sea for a change. Unfortunately, this one isn't impressive - it's just another witbier without any standout qualities. The drinkability isn't even that great, either. In other words, utterly forgettable. (2.75)

2.83/5: Wahoos aren't as cool as sculpins
