Newly available in my area, sculpin and big eye! Glad to pick up a sixer of each.

Tannish orange, clear, moderate head and lace.

Taste and aroma are expectably IPA, and up to par with the quality of beer I've experienced with other ballast point beers that I've gotten in trades. Bitterness is high, hops flavors and aromas are high, with a little sweetness from the malt base to balance it out. Citrus dominates the hops flavors, with a little earthy and floral notes.

Body is medium and finishes bitter. It's a fine IPA, as is the sculpin.

Poured from a 12 oz. bottle into a tall pint glass. No bottling date.

Appearance: Pours a deep copper amber orange with a lot of rising bubbles. About one finger of off white head that fades into a thin creamy layer. Leaves a lot of lacing around the glass.

Smell: A juicy and ripe hop forward aroma with big hints of citrus fruit and some sweet malt. Upfront citrus hops with hints of grapefruit, orange peel, mango, apricot, tangerine, passion fruit, and lemon. Also some earthy hop hints of grass and some herbal pine resin. Bready malt background with hints of sweet caramel, grains, biscuit, yeast, and cracker. A very juicy and solid hoppy aroma.

Taste: Like the smell previews, a ripe and juicy hop forward IPA taste with big citrus fruit notes and a solid backing of bready malt. Upfront citrus hops with a taste of orange pulp, grapefruit, mango, tangerine, apricot, lemon, and passion fruit. Herbal hop notes of pine resin. Earthy notes of grassy hops. Bready malt presence with notes of sweet caramel, biscuit, grains, cracker, and yeast. Pretty upfront with the juicy hops. A very good IPA taste.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied with a moderate amount of carbonation. Very juicy and fairly oily. Finishes pretty dry.

Overall: Another great American IPA from Ballast Point. Very similar to Sculpin with its citrus forward West Coast taste. Maybe a little more laid back and more malty? Will need to do a side by side. Both are great.

Pours clear copper with one finger head. Aroma is a nice grapefruit pine. Very nice. More malt flavor than expected. A sweet soapy flavor taste along with some dried apricots, something a bit muddled going on here in the taste. Dry finish with medium light yet slick mouthfeel. Clean apricot finish. Somewhat unique flavor profile. Not bad but not really what I was expecting after loving Sculpin.

The colour is deep gold (24 EBC), the liquid is clear. The two finger head is off-white, it sinks quickly to a thick lid leaving some lacing on the glass.

The smell is sweet, fruity and hoppy. Hints of onions and olive oil. Grapefruits, oranges, apricots, green bananas and a touch of marzipan. Some bitterness.

The taste starts with a robust bitterness, some green berries and fruits. Oily notes of rubber, garlic and onions. Medium body. The aftertaste is smoother with some dry citric flavours, lemon and lime. Caramel-sweetness and some biscuits. The finish is bitter, dry and a bit harsh.

The carbonation is medium to mild, the shirt-lived bubbles smooth. The liquid is a bit thick and quite sticky.

A thick and oily AIPA with some disturbing garlic flavours.

Code on bottle: 13273. I think that means it was bottled about 3 weeks ago.

Appearance: A perfectly clear honey/caramel color with a fluffy off-white two finger head. In my opinion, the ideal appearance of an American IPA.

Aroma: Earth, pine, and grain. Fruity undertones.

Taste: A pleasant mix of hop characteristics. Starts with a sort of bright earthy flavor that packs a mighty bitter punch to the palate. Then it transitions into piney and almost citrusy character near the finish and ends with deep earthy/spicy tones in the aftertaste. The bitterness stays high throughout and hits its most intense points in the echoing aftertaste. The malt bill goes nearly unnoticed beneath the forest of hops. Very robust for 7% ABV.

Mouthfeel: Just above medium in body with higher than average carbonation. Steady drinkability but edging on palate fatigue.

Final Thoughts: Not my first choice when it comes to hop profile, but a decent one at that. Would I drink it again? Sure.

Enjoyed this brew out of a group in a large snifter glass.

A: Pours a copper hue with a thin white head that leaves a decent trail and thin wispy lace.

S: Hoppy and pine aroma with a malty background.

T: Bitter hoppy tart flavor up front with an alcoholic bite. Finishes on the tart side of dry.

M: Medium body and medium carbonation.

O: This is a solid ipa – great balance between the hops and malt.
