On tap at the Village Tavern in Geneseo, NY.

This one pours a very dark brown, almost black with a half inch head, and a little bit of lacing.

This smells like burnt and roasted malt, with some pine and chocolate.

This has a very burnt and bitter taste, with a bit of smoke and pine. It's a fairly intense flavor, and I'm not entirely sure a hoppy schwarzbier was needed.

This is creamy and fairly thick, with a moderate level of carbonation.

Didn't love this one, I wish the malt flavor could have come a bit more to the forefront.

On-tap 7/5/2015 at Pour Farm in New Bedford, MA served in a US tumbler pint glass.

A: The beer is a deep dark brown color, with a short dense beige head that fades slowly and leaves a thick lace on the glass.

S: The aroma contains lager yeast, coffee, roasted malts and a good amount of hops.

T: The taste starts out with some breadiness from a hearty roasted malt character and lager yeast. Then some flavors of coffee and dark fruit come in. The hops presence is strong for the style and provides a good balance. The after-taste is slightly hoppy and slightly bready.

M: Crisp and smooth, medium body, medium carbonation, finish is dry and slightly sticky.

O: Tasty, goes down very easily, not too filling, decent kick, very good representation of style, this is a good beer to drink for a while if you’re in the mood for the style.

Foamy beige head. Chunky rings of lace after each sip. Mahongany brown where some light does pass.

Great combination of subtle aromas. I smell mostly pale malt despite the color. Good hop presence and light alcohol round out the smell.

The flavor is much darker with some black patent barley showing up. It dominates the swallow and aftertaste. There's a bit ash in the aftertaste as well. Moderate body. High carbonation.

On tap at Sublime Alehouse

A: black with a one finger mocha colored head. Good retention.

S: A little suspicious because none of the other reviews noted this, but mine smelled like fresh squeezed lime. Lots of citrusy hop notes as well with some darker hints of chocolate and earth underneath.

T: I really liked this one. Bright citrus hops, lime, some faint roasted malt, dark chocolate and earth. Definitely more reminiscent of a Black IPA with a lighter mouthfeel. Tasty!

A really spicy dark and hoppy beer. Black and foamy in the pint glass. Pleasantly spritzy in the mouth. Not much aroma, but a whiff of hops.

Rather bitter, sharp, and full of tangy aromatics. Very strongly tasting of dark roasted flavors with a touch of burned caramel. A nice mellowness of malt but quite a light body. Thoroughly sharp and ends on a dry note. The hot, tickly spice is quite remarkable.

A big gulp of hops, but it looks just like an American Black Ale and tastes more on the black IPA side. Not so dank or woody, it's a clean and quite quaffable flavor. On tap at Neighborhood in San Diego.

On tap at Home Brew Mart. Unfortunately, there's no option for American Dark Lager so I guess this will go under American Pale Lager, which it's not.

A: Very dark brown with a crimson hue when held to light. The head is a pillowy light brown mass.

S: Earth accompanies dark chocolate, pine, orange, and grapefruit. Nice hop presence. Roasted grains are apparent.

T: Roasted with a little char and bitter dark chocolate. Earth blends with pine, orange flesh, and grapefruit rind. Moderately bitter. The chocolate finish is clean, bitter, and astringent. Citrus rind lingers.

M: Medium body with upper medium carbonation.

Overall: A solid black lager, though a touch more astringent in the flavor than I prefer.

On tap at Haven Gastropub in Pasadena, CA.

Pours an almost opaque super dark brown with a foamy khaki head that settles to a thin cap on top of the beer. Foamy rings of lace line the glass on the drink down. Smell is of dark roasted malt, cocoa, and citrus zest. Taste is much the same with a mild amount of roasty bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a good level of carbonation with a crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a pretty good beer that is drinkable but it smells better than it tastes in my opinion.
