Style: American IPA

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 7.00%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
Our Award-winning IPA, with a citrus twist.
Our Grapefruit Sculpin is the latest take on our signature IPA. Some may say there are few ways to improve Sculpin’s unique flavor, but the tart freshness of grapefruit perfectly complements our IPA’s citrusy hop character. Grapefruit’s a winter fruit, but this easy-drinking ale tastes like summer.

The Sculpin IPA is a testament to our humble beginnings as Home Brew Mart. It showcases bright flavors and aromas of apricot, peach, mango & lemon. The lighter body also brings out the crispness of the hops. The Sculpin fish has poisonous spikes on its fins that can give a strong sting. Ironically, the meat from a Sculpin fish is considered some of the tastiest. Something that has a sting but tastes great; sounds like a Ballast Point India Pale Ale. This version of our Sculpin IPA has grapefruit added; the grapefruit flavor really enhances the citrus aroma of the hops.

got this brew by accident at Trader Joe's. Weird stuff. It tastes like beer with grapefruit added. Read the label and sure enough, it is grapefruit flavored beer! Not my style. Honestly, am going to pour these down the drain. Pity, now I am off my feed for Sculpin too. What is with the high ratings? Is Ballast Point buying raters?

Sculpin is great beer. The grapefruit version is pretty much awful. It creates a weird fruity flavor that horribly ruins the final product.

Pours a white head and a nice lively beer.

The smell is of fake fruit and hops. Just totally off putting.

The beer honestly is grape fruit, there isn't much else to see here.

This is all grapefruit rind, to the point of being unpleasant. An unfortunate miss for all brewery that puts out many other great beers. And everyone seems to be slurping this stuff up like it's God's cum, so at least it will make them a ton of money to make better beer.

I may be one of the only people who absolutely hated this beer. All about the taste, it is just too overwhelming of grapefruit floral taste. Seems perfumy in taste. Mouthfeel and look are nice like regular sculpin and the grapefruit smell us nice. Could use more citrus and tart taste from the grapefruit and less fruit/floral.

Split this with some coworkers; thoroughly meh, mainly cause I'm not a big fan of the style, but more palatable than previous grapefruit beers and IPAs I've had in the past.

Looks & smells the part, but falls short in the most important category - taste. Really a mess of a beer, strong artificial citrus & bizarre hop makes it sour - not at all what I'm looking for in an IPA.

I had to have this because it was in the BEer advocate 250. It actually was not that bad. I don't like grapefruit and I only kinda like India pale ales but this was very drinkable.

Firstly, if you're not a grapefruit fan, avoid this one. I've heard people say it's not grapefruit tasting enough, but to me it's grapefruit overkill. Decent head and nice lacing. The grapefruit enhances the piney notes and, as advertised, gives it a bite. Have to say it only became more appealing to me after I'd had a few Weyerbachers which mellowed it out a lot.

Hmmm. Wish I knew what was going on here. I have tried Sculpin a few times now and get little of what others are talking about. It seems too light bodied and subtle for me in comparison to like-style beers like Stone and Lagunitas. So, perhaps the citrus bite of grapefruit will enhance it? It did, but not enough. Still too light bodied for my personal preference. I really enjoy so many of Ballast Point's offerings that this baffles me. Chalk it up to individual palate issues...

Look: Grapefruit Sculpin IPA had a medium amount of foam towards the top.
Smell: Grapefruit Sculpin IPA had a pleasing aroma of beer and grains.
Taste: Grapefruit Sculpin IPA had taste of grapefruit merged with bitter grains.
Feel: Grapefruit Sculpin IPA had carbonation that would eventually disappear into flatness.
OVerall: I purchased a bottle of Grapefruit Sculpin IPA for $5.99 USD in Glendale, CA/USA. People who enjoy both grapefruit and IPA beer will enjoy Grapefruit Sculpin IPA.

It pours a clear orange color and has a strong aroma of citrus & hops. The taste is sweet up front but finishes with hop bitterness & tart grapefruit. Good IPA with a refreshing twist.

l: light brown.
s: candy and citrus.
t: bitter and grapefruit.
f: light.
o: well let me tell you I for one can't give this one an above average rating for the simple fact that iv'e tasted better for less money. $15 for a six pack is not bad but when you can get something for $12 that is just as good if not better than what is a man to do? Yes it smell good it might even look good but does it taste good? No not $15 good at least not to me. If money is burning a hole in you pocket get yourself a bomber if you must, if not then go ahead and skip it unless you simply love grapefruit.

I can tell it isn't fresh but either way. Heavy grapefruit peel and hops. Taste is muddled grapefruit and hops, slight malt. Not a fan of this. I just don't like grapefruit also but I've honestly had better IPAs for all the hype behind this.

This beer is hard to rate as Sculpin is such a great beer - but I can't justify a high rating based on that. Bottom line is I want to taste and smell grapefruit from the hops, not from an infusion of grapefruit - it's kinda like "too much of a good thing is not good at all". Based on the ratings, I'm a minority, but so be it. This one did not work for me - it did not taste artificial and it did not taste bad; it tasted like a fresh mixing of Sculpin with a solid shot of unsweetened grapefruit - it resembled a "Shandy gone wild" - and Shandies suck in my opinion. While I'm sure my overall take on this beer is dragging down the "look, smell, etc." ratings, I'm OK with that as a 2.75 taste rating for something I really didn't like is overly generous.

Postscript - I bought two of these, and enjoyed my second drinking much more, so I raised the taste and overall ratings slightly to account for maybe not being in the right mood on first drinking.

Look: Beautiful: Translucent orange color with +2 fingers of foam on-top;
Significant lacing.

Smell: My first thought was peaches, but as the pour relaxed, the grapefruit
comes powering thru. Very neat.

Taste: Perhaps a whisper of orangey sweetness, but the grapefruit presents
almost immediately and rides thru to the close, which is bitter and lingering.
(Even minutes later!) Fairly surprising punch to this, given the 7%, although
the booze didn't overly present in the taste.

Feel: Perhaps a bit astringent, otherwise, middle-of the road non-descript.

Overall: The glass presentation and nose aside--which were exceptional--
this comes up short for me. Just too much unrelenting bitterness from
the hops and accompanying grapefruit, without enough push-back from
the malt-side.

This did not work for me. I was expecting/hoping for an ipa with grapefruit juice. Instead the only grapefruit flavor I noticed was the bitter rind. Not enjoyable.

Look: A nice light golden color with a short white head that leaves some lacing

Smell: Citrusy and grapefruit. Basically Sculpin with more grapefruit. No real hints on the taste surprise

Taste: So you get the nice citusy flavors of Sculpin, but then you are blasted by a grapefruit soda type grapefruit flavor. Like it tastes like somebody mixed grapefruit soda into beer, but took out the sweetness of soda. Really off-putting.

Feel: Medium body with a crisp carbonation that reinforces the grapefruit soda image... not sure if it is the taste playing with my mind, but thats what it feels like to me, and that isn't the best either

Overall: I'm extremely disappointed in this, I thorughly enjoy Sculpin and even the habanero variation. But, this just doesn't taste like it should. I would have just upped the grapefruity hops instead of whatever was added to get this flavor.

Unfortunately for this beer a review is an opinion and my opinion is I do not like the taste of this beer from a 12 oz bottle poured into a tulip. I will give it another try either on tap or can or both, because I obviously have to be missing something here or I received a bad batch. Don't get me wrong, if someone offered me a bud light or this, I would hands down choose GFS. Will change/add to review upon further consumption.

Canned about a month ago.

Pours bright light orange/gold. One finger head. Retains pretty well. Looks great.

Overwhelmingly grapefruit in the nose. That's about it!

Taste just the same. Carbonated grapefruit juice. Very little in the way of any malt balance or even much in the way of any other typical flavors you get from a good hoppy IPA. Very one dimensional. lacking bitterness. Sweetness but mostly from the grapefruit.

Feel light bodied. Carbonation is fitting. A touch of sourness in the aftertaste.

I gotta say I'm underwhelmed. I don't get the rave reviews here. I think shandy IPA if there is such a thing. The grapefruit is way overdone with this. I prefer a good hop profile that lends a variety of citrus flavors with some pine and a decent bready and cracker balance. This is an all out grapefruit juice assault. Maybe infuse seltzer water with grapefruit juice and add a splash of alcohol to duplicate. I'll take a regular Sculpin please.

This was a let down. It was a little flat and watery. Hops were gone. Its clearly faded. I got this as an extra in a trade and I don't think it was fresh. It can't be that old because I don't think the beer came out that long ago. Wish there was a date on the bottle.

A- light gold, clear. Almost no head after rigorous pour from can.

S- not much here, some light citrus (yes grapefruit) but nothing too surprising.

T- standard but underwhelming IPA hoppiness finishing with a strange, overripe fruit bitterness.

M- thin, low carbonation.

O- this beer is pretty meh. I do wonder how long it's been on the shelf but under the circumstances I wouldn't get it again.

On tap at Al’s of Hampden. Pour is transparent golden yellow with a bubbly off white head. Nose has a fair bit of lemon pledge, faint grapefruit, a touch of soapy hop. Taste follows suit, tons of lemon pledge, very light bitterness, grapefruit tones in the finish. Bitterness picks up through the finish. Light bodied, moderate carb.

Smells like a blend of grapefruit and fresh cut squash (butternut or acorn), so not exactly a pleasant smell. Taste follows the smell, squash flavor present, a bit of IPA somewhere in there. Not sure if I have a bad batch, but this is not good.

On tap at the Basin Pub in Bushnell's Basin, NY.

Pours a golden yellow-ish color, with a small quarter inch head, and a lot of lacing.

Smells understandably strongly of grapefruit, of both the actual fruit and of the actual hop bent, with some other indistinguishable sweeter citrus.

My main problem with this beer is that it didn't really need to be done. Sculpin is already huge on the grapefruit to begin with, tons of citrus, all created simply by hop magic. This amplifies the grapefruit, but doesn't improve it. The grapefruit subdues all the other fruit flavors I get out of this one. All grapefruit, all the way. This knock is not to say the beer doesn't taste good- it's just unnecessary. The grapefruit additions beat down all that was good in Sculpin and make this a total unappealing fruit bomb.

This one is kind of light bodied, with a crisp, slightly sweet mouthfeel, and a medium amount of carbonation.

A beer that didn't need to be made. Sculpin is the base, so it still tastes alright I guess.

12 0z very fresh bottle
A-clear golden color with a white 1-2 finger very fresh lacing from start to finish very nice looking
S- i smell fresh grapfruit with sculpins signature tropical assortments of hops again very nice
T- Whoa this is Fresca infused inside a Sculpin it has an artificial metal grapefruit rind taste with the base sculpin in the background trying to assert its beautiful bouquet the grapefruit wins its a summer shandy
M--some bitter grapefruit with the smooth base sculpin in the background medium carbonation
O- this is a summer drink a grapefruit shandy it is drinkable but i prefer regular Sculpin this is worth a try and i will still buy it from time to time but its just not my style as it was to artificial tasting
