Pours into an imperial pint glass a rich clear copper/bronze with a nice tightly formed one finger off white head atop.Aromas are nutty and doughy with with mild earthy and leafy hops.Not overly sweet on the palate with nutty malt flavors at the onset,some more of the bread dough and earthy somewhat spicy hops in the finish.It's not a big left coast hopped up red but it's a solid beer,nice job.

Growler filled at the Green Growler Grocery in Croton-on-Hudson, NY.

Pours a nice deep and dark ruby hued amber. Darker tan head, leaves a blobby tiny bubble film and scattered fields of thicker lace.

Nose is malty and herbal, with some light mint flourishes.

Caramel sweet malts, softly spicy hops. I get more mint, some subtle grapefruit, more toasty goodness and a hopped up dry finish.

Complex and flavorful. nice to try a new brew from BP. It's been awhile...

A - Pours a clear, deep amber, off white head. Lots of spotty lace.

S - Malt is the predominant smell. Sweet, lovely malt. I don't think I can even discern anything beyond it.

T - Big sweet malt candy bar, but definitely held in place by surrounding hops. Nice.

M - Medium to full body, nice carb, pretty good balance for the big flavors.

D - Very nice beer. One is enough.

22oz bottle. Deep clear copper with a rich off-white head. This retains with a smooth creaminess that drenches the sides of the glass with thick sticky lace. The aroma smells of fresh pine and green citrus, with a malty combo of burnt grains and sticky sweetness behind it. The taste is similar, with a fresh blast of citrus and resin that sits against a backbone of sweet caramel and toasted graininess. Pine and bitterness really stick hard in the finish. The mouthfeel is medium bodied and prickly on the tongue but then more oily and smooth underneath which combines with a well hid ABV to keep this drinking pretty darn easy. This is a nicely done American Amber with the type of aggressive hop character and an equally assertive malt presence that I really go for in the style. I’m glad I picked this one up.

Bomber poured into a globe glass. This, the first batch of the 'Homework Series' is quite unique. For the entire recipe is on the label, grain bill, hop additons, yeast and fermentation notes all for the world to see. And with Ballast Point announcing a new 5 bbl experimental brewery in the works in Little Italy I trust there will be a lot more Homework to be done.

Pours a clear deep amber with half an inch of soapy off white foam and is garnet/crimson in the light. Offers decent retention amid a nice boil of carbonation from the bottom of the pour. Maintains a good surface cap through the glass with agitation.

Nice hop aroma with citrus and pine intitially with more caramel emerging with exposure. Quite hop forward for an amber as caramel notes are present yet well integrated and not overly sweet by any measure. Touch of hoppy ethanol with warming when you really stick your nose in it.

Taste follows with light caramel and a coarse and grainy flavor. Hops are dominant as malts are, again, well integrated. Some caramel nuttiness yet without the sweetness that often accompanies. Pleasant feel with a good level of carbonation, not too sweet or oily in nature. Offers a fair amount of bitterness for the style yet matching the hop delivery. As a result the finish is somewhat dry and offers a lingering subtle malt finish.

Overall quite solid for a hop head though not realy 'amberish' in nature. A Red IPA indeed yet much better than many an IPA with a distorted malt base. And quite fresh. Worth a visit..

On tap at the Ballast Point Tasting Room and Kitchen.

Clear dark red-brown with a vey nice beige head. A little spotty lacing

Feel: medium to medium-full body; smooth for style; Medium carbonation.

Smell: hmm. not as expected and a bit dank, but a clear hop presence.

Taste: lightly spicy, moderate-high hoppy; faint malt backbone.

O: interesting but not relatively strong among BP's offerings.

A: Pours slightly hazy amberish red with a 1" off-white head leaving spotty lace.

N: Pine and citrus with some spicy notes.

T: Caramel malts with some floral, herbal, sweet pine resin.

M: Medium body and carbonation. Finishes dry and sweetly malty.

O: Enjoyed, but would not seek out again. Excited to see what comes next.

Handsome creamy head in the St. Bernardus chalice. Color is more red-amber than coppery, and it's quite nice looking. Pleasant sudsy mouthfeel is a great feature.

Fairly rich with a tangy mouthfeel. Malty with just a little caramel sweetness, a pleasant warm roasted taste. The hops are assertive but not jarringly bitter. There is a really spicy and flowery bunch of aromatics followed by a restrained bitterness. The Centennial seems to give a big dose of flowery, resiny hop flavors, though the brew closes on a bitter and faintly harsh note.

One of the better Red Ales I've had, and seems like what you would aim for in a hoppy brew in this style. From the 22 oz bottle purchased at Bottleworks on University Ave.
