While it's great that there is a place in backwards PA where you can actually buy a decent selection of craft beer, I have to give Wegmans a very bad review. You simply cannot trust that the beer you buy here is anywhere near fresh. I consistently find IPA's here that have been on the shelf up to six months or more. I've spoken to management about this and they simply dismiss the importance of selling fresh beer. If buying fresh beer is important to you, you will have to buy it somewhere else.

Very Good food for grocery store food bar. Everything was fresh and tasted great, and the selection was vast. Chinese, Pizza, Sushi, Salad, Macaroni & Cheese, Italian and American faire. I liked the Old Bay Wings and Buffalo Chicken Pizza.
Beer selection was very good! The only issue was the mix a six selection was very pedestrian...at least to a hop head beer geek like me! and singles were $4 for a 12oz bottle, and you're getting a cheaper run of the mill choice, unless you RARELY find something that is worth the $4 price tag. Weis markets singles are $2.50

I'm a fan of Wegman's, and a bigger fan of locations that sell beer. Kind of a weird setup here as I'm not sure I even noticed the bombers and singles the last time I was here. Still the sections are organized pretty well (imports, west coast, east coast, and pa breweries).Considering they allow you to buy six packs, individual bombers, and 12oz bottles, this place rocks! A mixed sixer for 11.99 is a good way to try a bunch of diff beers (one single is 3.50 !). A nice selection with an emphasis on local stuff, and I appreciate the consistent price labeling. There were a couple of guys stocking the area who seemed to be only interested in their own conversation. The bomber selection was kinda weak with mostly the usual suspects. For a Marylander, it was nice to see Great Lakes, Founders, and Deschutes. Nothing too rare here, but it's solid enough that I'll return one day.

What can you say about the atmosphere at Wegmans? I mean it's one of the best grocery chains in the country, I wish there was one near me! That being said, it's massive and the first thing I did after walking in was ask someone where the beer was so I wouldn't be doing laps all over the store! It's in the corner near the registers, with another section that contains some sixers.

Selection here involves a good mix of sixers and make your own six packs, and the good thing is the mix a six packs are $12 which is a pretty good deal, with the exception of the fact that the choice of singles is a little small. It's the classic run of the mill sixers here, but with the only exception that they sell Ithaca, and had Flower Power and Cascazilla (and some other Ithaca sixers as well).

There are a few more bombers, but they are not much in variety and highly devoted to Dogfish. Service is perfectly fine and cordial, and people will help you find something if needed.

Nothing fancy, a good place for simple mixers ideally for the price. Didn't really find anything special here aside from some Ithaca sixers I can't get back home, but not an ideal destination for shopping.

So glad I found Wegman's! The beer laws in PA are horrific and stupid, making it very hard to try new beers without buying either a whole case, or if you get lucky, a six pack. (Though, finding a bar that sells decent six packs isn't easy, and they are pricey if you do find one.)

Wegman's isn't exactly close to me, but I will drive there as often as I can to get beer now that I've found them, because they allow you to make your own six packs for $11.00.

You are pretty much limited to what they have in their singles section, and some of the more expensive beers are not usually there, but sometimes you get lucky. Although one of the workers there told me that they do not put Belgian beers in the singles section because of their cost, I have found Duvel and Chimay in the singles section once before. Score!

Also, with the singles section, you have to dig. It's not always a whole row of whatever beer you see in front of the display. Sometimes, behind the beers in front, are other beers. If you are willing to dig and look behind the beers in front, you can sometimes find some great stuff lurking in the back. I have found some real gems there. La Fin Du Monde, anyone?

Sometimes if you don't see a single you are looking for, but they have it in a six pack, one of the workers will break up the six pack to get you a single. I got a Young's Double Chocolate Stout that way one time.

Most of the staff in that area of the store seem to be beer lovers and quite knowledgeable. They told me last time I was there that they will be expanding their beer selection again in 2012. Can't wait!

As for the regular beer aisles with full six packs and bombers, it is broken down by area and by country. A Belgian section with Chimay, St Bernardus, Delirium, Duvel, Ommegang, etc. There are also German, UK and other European imports, a West Coast section with Ballast Point, Stone, Bear Republic, Green Flash, etc., a local craft beer section with stuff like Troegs, Weyerbacher, ABC, etc. For me, it's a beer paradise, that will only get bigger and better once they expand.

Yes, there is a full grocery store there, too, with everything you would need, and a lot of specialty/gourmet meats and cheeses, a lot of really good prepared food, etc.

Unfortunately, with the stupid beer laws in PA you can only buy something like 192 or 196 ounces at once, which is just about 2 six packs and a bomber, maybe two. Also, you cannot pay for your groceries and beer at the same place. Since the reason they can sell beer is because they are an "eatery" and separate from the grocery store part of the store, you can only purchase as much food with your beer as you could probably sit down and eat at one time. So, if you plan on grocery shopping and getting beer at the same time, go get the beer first, take it out to your car, then go back in to get your groceries. Also, the cashiers at the beer section are not allowed to bag your beer. They will offer you a bag, and you can put the beer in, but they cannot do it themselves. Another weirdo PA law!

Anyway, hooray for Wegman's!

Wegman's gets around Pennsylvania's archaic alcohol laws by cordoning off the section of the store that includes its "cafe" and its beer offerings.

They pitched it at local municipal meetings when they sought approvals as a way to offer people who eat at their cafe a beer or glass of wine with their meal.

To date, they do not offer any wine by the glass at this store, though I know they do at an Allentown area store. And they took out the PLCB wine "kiosk" vending machine that was in the store. And to be honest, they really are selling beer for takeout. Very few people seem to purchase it to consume in store.

So even though this is a "restaurant" license, the place is really run as a package store, which is great for the consumer, especially when it comes to price.

Selection is very good, well organized by geography. There is an emphasis on Pennsylvania beers, especially the local Troegs offerings.

They also have an "end cap" display for Dogfish Head, and seem to feature a lot of Sierra Nevada offerings, too.

Right now they are also displaying a nice variety of hard ciders and pumpkin brews.

Year around they stock a wide variety of very good beers. There is also a small imports section. Being a mass market grocery store, they also carry the requisite adjunct swill.

But all in all, the emphasis of the beer offerings is craft beers, which keeps in tune with the store's high-end gourmet grocery, meat and produce offerings.

Aside from beer, Wegmans has outstanding butcher and seafood counters, with wild caught fish and dry aged prime meats. It also offers less expensive, but still good quality, meats and fish in its regular and frozen (for seafood) cases.

And good news, an employee told me they are planning a major expansion of the beer section which should almost double its size.

Christ this store was huge, one of the larger supermarkets i've ever entered. The beer section was on the far end, away from the store itself. In fact, to purchase beers, you had to buy in the restaurant area of the store.

Great selection of beers, lots of locals (all of Yuengling's portfolio, Troegs, Weyerbacher, Voodoo, lots of Belgians). Mostly six-packs, but they have a small single's selection that wasn't very appealing. I picked up a Pilzilla and a Smuttynose Imperial stout. It was pretty crowded when i was there, of course it was also labor day weekend.

Pretty solid store, a couple aisles of beer, great selection. Nothing crazy of course, although i was surprised to see Smuttynose Imperial stout there. A good place to visit to pick up 6 packs.

Atmosphere - I know that Wegmans is a supermarket, but to get pizza or sushi or subs or 100 other choices for dinner and enjoy in the cafe with a cold beer to wash it all down? That's an atmosphere I can enjoy. Everyone in the family can get something different and the cold singles selection is great at prices way below what you pay at a bar or restaurant.

Quality - this is a supermarket, not a big warehouse, so freshness and turnover are very good.

Service - There is always someone there to help you find what you need. The cashiers are knowledgeable about the beers, too!

Selection - over 700 varieties of beer and the selection changes regularly. There's a big DFH display with all of the varieties that are currently available - Chateau Jiahu, Theobroma, even World Wide Stout in 12oz bottles (for only $8.49!) They also have a great cold bomber section at low prices you don't see anywhere else.

Value - many of their prices are lower than you will find at the distributor (although you can only buy 192oz at a time, you may need to make several trips!) Tax is included in the shelf price, too! 6 pack prices are much lower than any other shop in the area. There is also a craft your own 6 pack selection for just $12.99. They just expanded their CYO selection to include cold beers. The cold bomber selection is amazing!

This is a beer section in Wegmans, so you can pick up everything you need in addition to the beer. You can also enjoy your beer in their Cafe.

Wegmans (on the Carlisle Pike in Mechanicsburg) has probably the best selection of craft brews in the area for six-packs, four-packs, and single large format bottles. And the prices seem pretty reasonable. Some of the bottles seem a tiny bit pricey, but not too bad. And the fact is you're not going to be able to buy less than a case of many of these beers anywhere else.

And if you're looking for a cheese or other food to pair with something, Wegmans also has the best selection of any 'grocery' store or deli I know of.

On the other hand, if you want small single bottles (mixed sixes), or draft brews, Al's of Hampden (over in Enola) is the place to go.
