Hazy, Orangey peach color, that was slightly disturbing. A nice 3" head that laced the glass wel,l as it settled down - the slightly off white color of the beer-surf was a veiled hint and invitation to guess the high strength of this beer. Too late - like an agitated child in class, the nose couldn't wait to prematurely give me the answer - 8% ABV. Powerful alcoholic smack in the aroma that had me braced for the first mouthfull, erm... sip. I was very surpised at how well balanced this beer is, I expected an alcoholic blanket on taste. But not so, a very fruity, malty introduction reasonably good mouthfeel that reminded me of freshly baked bread for soem reason, and a finish that had a slight sweetness to it - but nothing sickly, just a nice warming finish that gently reminded you this beer is for sipping.
Really Nice beer this !
- I have the Black Eye (blended) Ale to review next, wonder if the character of this beer will be destroyed by the Black Hawk Stout ??

Appearance - clear copper color with beige head

Smell - molasses, caramel, oak

Taste - molasses, caramel, oak, nuts

Mouthfeel - medium bodied, medium carbonation, not much complexity to the flavor

Overall - nothing wrong with this beer, but nothing about it was particularly memorable either. Fans of the style might want to give it a shot

Price Point - $2.25/12 oz bottle

This is a very decent brew. With the hefty 8% abv that isn’t detectable. The light mouthfeel is a throw off of some of the flavors that shine through. This reminds me of what a candy beer would be. Almost like a medicinal fruit syrup followed by bready malt and slight hoppy finish. Though nothing screams excellence, this brew is still worthy.

look: 3 | smell: 4.5 | taste: 3.5 | feel: 4 | overall: 3.5

Appearance: Pours a medium amber body with a tiny head that quickly disappears and leaves no lacing

Smell: Smells like a doppelbock; lots of sweet caramel malt and dark fruits; clearly a dose of alcohol and a vague hint of hops

Taste: Starts out promising, with a rich malty, dark fruit base; the middle, however, falls apart into an indistinct flatness until the finish, where the bitter hops kick in; very odd, because I liked the beginning and the end

Mouthfeel: Rich and viscous; not much carbonation

Drinkability: A peculiar beer that I enjoyed, on balance; I'll need to try this again sometime as there was something a bit weird about this bottle

Poured from a 12 ounce bottle into a pint glass. It's a reddish orange color, clear with a couple fingers of slightly off-white head.

The aroma is a good blend of caramel malt and bitter hops. It's a well balanced nose that's very inviting.

The taste is mostly hoppy up front then a more malty warmth later through on the sip. Definitely more bitter hop flavor than the smell indicates, with a mostly pine flavor and hints of grapefruit.

It's bitter on the end and full bodied.

A very nice beer!

Thanks to clvand0 for this one. It pours a ever so slightly golden amber color wtih a 2 finger head that falls to coat the beer very well. The nose is big sweet raisin, caramel and alcohol. The strong ales are not my favorite creation, but I'm willing to keep giving them a chance. The flavor is nice. The sweetness is not cloying, like I am used to. The raisin and caramel are very nice together, its almost roastey, but not quite. The feel is thick and slightly creamy, almost velvety. This is a nice beer. The strong flavors are not offensive. Good show.

A - Clear light amber color with a quickly dissipating off white head. Some carbonation bubbles rising throughout.

S - Sweet caramel malt, yeast, hops.

T - Mild tasting with sweet malts running the show. Balanced out nicely with some hop hop presence to give it only a mildly sweet finish. Alcohol is detectable as well as some yeasty flavors.

M - Thin

D - Less filling and although not remarkable it tastes good as well. Not great, but not bad considering the low price and high ABV. Once those things are considered, I will be having this one again.

Great imperial ale and is one of my go-to beers. Pours a great bronze color and great balanced taste. Despite an 8% alc/vol you can hardly tell it packs a punch. A smooth beer during anytime of the year.

This poured out amber with a tall white head. Decent lacing was left around the glass as it was consumed. Aroma was malty sweet with a good amount of earthy hops in it. There were notes of smoke and a bit of fruit to it as well. The taste was similar with malt sweetness being big upfront before a balancing earthy hoppiness came through. Alcohol was present but didn’t affect the taste negatively. Body is about medium. Drinkability was pretty good. This is a fairly solid beer that while not too exciting is still pretty enjoyable.

Poured from a 12 oz. bottle into a Macado's Halloween 2009 shaker pint glass.

Appearance: Pours a slightly hazy tawny color. Has a small, foamy head that dissipates slowly and leaves little lacing. Has a ton of carbonation bubbles floating to the surface as well.

Smell: Fruity with a sweet malt backbone. Slightly yeasty-smelling as well.

Taste: Starts malty and fruity. Ends with a nice hoppy bitterness complemented by yeasty undertones. Very complex, yet still balanced.

Mouthfeel: Crisp and clean with a perfect amount of carbonation.

Drinkability: A great beer! This brew is truly unique and is a pleasure to drink. Be warned, it hides its 8% ABV very well; you can barely taste the alcohol in it. Pick it up whenever you see it.

Hazy orange with a dense, off-white head. Great retention, thick, streaky lacing. Citrus and grassy hop aroma, oranges, bready and fruity. Very rich and creamy in texture, medium bodied, quite fruity with moderate bitterness. A little bready with some alcohol warmth and flavour in the finish, along wit grassy hops. Caramel sweetness throughout. I enjoyed it and would purchase it again.

Poured from 12oz bottle into Duvel tulip glass.

Appearance: Hazy pale amber color with a large off-white head that dissipates quickly, yielding a thick wall of lace.

Smell: Lots of fruit- apple, oranges, and sweet white grape with mild bready notes.

Taste: Begins with sweet apple and bitter orange peel flavors, before rounding out to a sweet breadiness. Finish is citric with a balanced, toasty bitterness and a nutty hint.

Mouthfeel: Medium to heavy body with balanced, natural carbonation and a sticky finish.

Overall: A very good, complex beer. Deceptively drinkable at 8% ABV, so watch out!

12oz bottle.

A: Clear amber. 1 finger high foam.
S: Mildly caramelized malts. Light citrus.
T: Medium caramelized malty. Moderate bitterness. Slightly citrus. Dry but has some hints of sweetness.
M: Moderate body. Moderate carbonation.
O: I suspected it's American strong ale, but actually it's similar to English styles. I prefer to have more complex and stronger flavor and aroma given the relative high alcohol content. Fairly nice for the price though.

Pours a slightly hazy dark amber with a tall, dense, two-finger tan head.

Aroma is faint with suggestions of toasty malt, caramel and some mild fruity esters. It's nice, but it requires a lot of swirling and coaxing to come out.

Flavor is dominated by the rich malt. Slight fruit and warming alcohol linger in the background. Bitterness provides just the right amount of balance.

This is a pretty strong ale, but an easy drinking one as well. It could be more complex, but that is made up for with a certain smoothness.

Bought on sale recently not knowing brewery has been defunct for over a year.

A: hazy rust-orange with tan scant head

S: floral, nutmeg, and pound cake

T: caramel, golden raisins, and a hint of spruce resin

M: mediumish-light with a fair quantity of carbonation

O: A simple straightforward low hops ale. Easy, too easy, drinking at 8.0 abv. Quaffed a serving in a few minutes before dinner then had another during dinner.

Disappointed I discovered this a year after production ended.
