Cask at the brewpub. An aged barleywine (three years?) put into a Calvados barrel with oak spirals.

Pours an opaque deep chestnut color with a cascading one-finger cream-colored head. The head recedes into a thin layer on top leaving solid lacing.

Smells of vanilla, sweet caramel malts, and toffee, in that order. Also present are hints of earthy oak and a faint amount of indistinct fruitiness.

Tastes similar to how it smells, though just a tad less complex. Sweet caramel malt flavors with slight amounts of medium chocolate kick things off. Joining in shortly thereafter are good amounts of liquefied toffee and smooth vanilla flavors. Midway through the sip a slight spiciness from the oak makes a brief appearance. Finally, near the end of the sip the flavor profile sweetens a bit with the addition of very light green apple flavors. The ending is mildly bitter and leaves caramel malt and toffee flavors lingering on the palate.

Mouthfeel is very good. It's got a nice thickness with soft carbonation.

Drinkability is great. I finished my glass quickly and wish I'd had time for a few more.

Overall this was a great beer that melded perfectly with the barrels and additional oak. If this makes another appearance it is very much worth seeking out.
