Blind Tasting Tripel Project of Fall 2015
Dense fine white head, lots of bubbles, gold, beautiful
phenols and fruity: banana, peaches, pears also bready, some booze
starts malt sweet, peppery, bitterness, a bit harsh, later a rum character evolves
velvety, medium body, refreshing but not biting carbonation, definitely some heat to it
Characterful Tripel that has everything . Could be more drinkable if it weren't for this certain harshness and little too present heat. Still very good.

October, 2013 bottle

A: pours a yellow-gold with ample off white head
S: overripe pear, honey, cantaloupe, white wine
T: very sweet and vinous, honey and ripe fruit at the front and pepper, herbal hop notes on the finish
M: moderate carbonation with a light mouthfeel
O: a unique tripel. the musty, sweet, white wine and honey flavors all mesh remarkably well

Appearance is excellent with some serious head. Aroma is subtle yet intense/complex-molasses, bananas, spices, bread... Flavor is not subtle! Delicious with mirror of the nose adding a warming, explosion of flavor. Outstanding!!!

I poured this tripel form a 330ml bottle which had been bottled in July 2015. A nice dark, straw-colored liquid that produced a white that came forth. The head dissipated quickly into a thin layer of fairly large bubbles. Minimal lacing was present. The beer’s aroma is a bit understated for a 10% ABV offering. The flavor is excellent, exactly what I expect from a Belgian-style ale, strong, bitter and yeasty. The mouthfeel is a bit on the heavy side. I will definitely be having this one again.

Cloudy with an orange-amber color. Small head. Rim bubbles, no lace.

Malty and sour. Mild on both counts. A tiny piece of sweetness.

Leans sour, but with a good malt base. I detect some orange and rum (?). The alcohol content is hidden in the strong flavors, but I can feel the warmth in the throat. Spritzy but with a solid body. The aftertaste is light, some cream, some unsweetened orange.

DATE TASTED: September 6, 2015 ... GLASSWARE: Chimay chalice... OCCASION: watching Naked and Afraid XL's Reunion Special... APPEARANCE: first, out of the bottle: frothing and bubbling like champagne! once out, thick, two-finger white head that retains like a beast...then, the body: thick, opaque and dark orange, with minimal effervescence but dark, chunky sediment at the glass's base.,, how does a 10% ABV retain such head? picture perfect ... AROMA: strong pineapple, apple and sugary candy; other hops suggest the slightest resin and pepper; yeasts hint at bubblegum... PALATE: demands a sipping approach, as the instant the DT hits the lips with thickness and froth... warming, active--a heater in the throat, while glistening on the teeth on the way down... TASTE: full-bodied, intense and punishing with its grapefruit, raisin, plum and pineapple... the malts come across as light biscuit... the yeasts, again, develop a bubblegum and peppercorn combination--what a complete bottle...OVERALL: A rare catch at Mountain Valley's bottom shelf and an awesome reconnect with a bottle hand-selected by Russell's (Bloomsburg, PA) owner himself about a decade ago... one of the best Belgians I have encountered, claiming an experience in itself... big and bold but just warm enough to miss perfection--but not by much!
