Look: It pours black in color. It has a large brown head and head retention is excellent.

Smell: There is a high rich chocolate aroma. There are also background notes of molasses and a wine like quality to it. In addition, there is a slight hint of roast. As the beer warms, an herbal quality becomes apparent in the nose.

Taste: There are chocolate and molasses flavors with a slight burnt note in the background. There are low dark fruit notes of plum as well. It has a slight earthly flavor to it as well. The dark fruit flavors, especially the plum, group as the beer warms.

Feel: It has a full body with a creamy character and a dry finish. There is some alcohol warming as well.

Overall, a good combination of ingredients enhances the chocolate flavors.

Bottle at share. Yeast compliments the dark stout malts. Dried fruit character as well in both aroma and taste. Sweet, nutty, bitter, yeast, very complex beer.

Pours seal brown with several mammoth inches of khaki froth, and it would have gone much higher if I didn't cut it off at half a bottle--looks like bottle-conditioning gone wild. Aroma smells of toffee, roasted malt, and peanut brittle.

Surprisingly mild taste features roasted malt and seltzer water. The mouthfeel is obviously quite thin as well. I really wish there was more to say; I feel like something must have been off with this batch.

If this bottle was as intended, it certainly leaves much to be desired. Maybe I'll give it another shot some day to see if it's representative.

Draft at The Sovereign in DC.

I have had several bad experiences with bottles of this beer. I am excited at the chance to try this on draft and have a better experience. Dark chestnut hue with a quarter inch of thick beige collar. Aromas of hazelnut, earth, vanilla. Aggressive malt character with notes of char. Much better than the bottled versions I’ve tried.

Deep dark brown where light shines through the edge of the glass. Excellent starting head which never completely subsides. Extensive lattice of lace.

The smell is more spicy, like cinnamon, lactose, and brown sugar than like a "stout". I do get semisweet chocolate in the background.

The flavor is more like a homebrew stout in that it had a strong yeast component and a touch of sourness to the tongue. The coffee aspect is very light. The aftertaste is more sour than most stouts. Overall, this is interesting because it diverges from the classic flavors.

Pours very carbonated. Billowy mocha head. Had to let it settle to get the whole bottle into the tulip. Head fades over a few minutes to a thin head and sticky lacing. The beer is quite dark.

Smells like dark fruit, a little chocolate. Very plum and raisin forward.

Taste is dark fruit: plums, raisins, molasses, some vinous red wine type flavors. There is relatively little roast. A little chocolate. A little coffee. Bitterness is well balanced.

Mouthfeel is thick and chewy. Sweet on the tongue. Flavors linger for a while.

Overall this is not bad. It's not bad, but not quite what I was expecting. This is probably closer to a quad than a stout. Very fruit forward without much roast character.

Aromas of chocolate milk. Flavors of coffee and chocolate. Nice sparkle from carbonation to keep it refreshing.

Black colour, with a brown head with medium retention. Not much lace. Aroma of dark fruits, plums, figs, chocolate, licorice, some coffee. Medium body, silky palate, normal carbonation. Taste of chocolate, dark fruits, some coffee, plums. Wellbalanced, not specially the best stout I've tried. I hoped more coming from De Dolle. Correct.

A well carbonated stout is a lovely thing.

This was a vintage 2010/June and was consumed 2017/January. Six and half years. This is an Import Stout refermented in the bottle. Color is dark and head is tremendously big and a light tan in color. Aromas of berries, sweet malt and a bit of barnyard. Plenty of carbonation, almost over the top. Taste is slightly vinegary, very bitter with touches of chocolate, tart berries and a small amount of funkiness. Finish is ever so slightly bitter with tart berries and some metallic on the finish. Overall, nice and glad I tried

S: Brown sugar. Licorice. French roast coffee. Hobnobs. Roasted malts. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
T: Cacao nibs. Brown sugar. Tootsie roll. Caramel. Mesquite. Chalk. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
M: Medium-bodied. Gushing carbonation. Chalky dry finish. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
O: De Dolle might have gone slightly overboard with the bottle refermentation this year, as every bottle I've purchased from De Dolle dated after Q4 2015 has left a sticky mess on the kitchen floor so far. I'm not a huge fan of the style, but this is probably as good as it gets with a Foreign / Export Stout; bold flavors with a respectable amount of alcohol and an unbelievably dry finish.

Poured from a 300 ml bottle into a globe glass.

L - Dark brown with ruby highlights; so dark it is difficult to determine clarity. Tan colored head is huge, thick and very persistent.

S - Strong malt aroma yields nuttiness, stone fruit and low roastiness. Overlaid is a moderate barnyard funkiness, which makes an inviting blend with the malt notes.

T - Flavors are dominated by Brett funk at first, which fades into malt notes of stone fruit and blackberry. No obvious hops flavors. Dry finish. There was a distracting metallic note after the initial pour, but it faded away as the beer warmed and breathed.

F - Medium to thin body. Low carbonation. No alcohol burn. Medium hops bitterness and low sourness in the finish.

O - This is an interesting and enjoyable sour beer, but disappointing as a stout. It lacks a base of malt and roastiness that are the halmarks of a stout.
