Aromas of chocolate milk. Flavors of coffee and chocolate. Nice sparkle from carbonation to keep it refreshing.

Black colour, with a brown head with medium retention. Not much lace. Aroma of dark fruits, plums, figs, chocolate, licorice, some coffee. Medium body, silky palate, normal carbonation. Taste of chocolate, dark fruits, some coffee, plums. Wellbalanced, not specially the best stout I've tried. I hoped more coming from De Dolle. Correct.

A well carbonated stout is a lovely thing.

This was a vintage 2010/June and was consumed 2017/January. Six and half years. This is an Import Stout refermented in the bottle. Color is dark and head is tremendously big and a light tan in color. Aromas of berries, sweet malt and a bit of barnyard. Plenty of carbonation, almost over the top. Taste is slightly vinegary, very bitter with touches of chocolate, tart berries and a small amount of funkiness. Finish is ever so slightly bitter with tart berries and some metallic on the finish. Overall, nice and glad I tried

S: Brown sugar. Licorice. French roast coffee. Hobnobs. Roasted malts. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
T: Cacao nibs. Brown sugar. Tootsie roll. Caramel. Mesquite. Chalk. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
M: Medium-bodied. Gushing carbonation. Chalky dry finish. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
O: De Dolle might have gone slightly overboard with the bottle refermentation this year, as every bottle I've purchased from De Dolle dated after Q4 2015 has left a sticky mess on the kitchen floor so far. I'm not a huge fan of the style, but this is probably as good as it gets with a Foreign / Export Stout; bold flavors with a respectable amount of alcohol and an unbelievably dry finish.

Poured from a 300 ml bottle into a globe glass.

L - Dark brown with ruby highlights; so dark it is difficult to determine clarity. Tan colored head is huge, thick and very persistent.

S - Strong malt aroma yields nuttiness, stone fruit and low roastiness. Overlaid is a moderate barnyard funkiness, which makes an inviting blend with the malt notes.

T - Flavors are dominated by Brett funk at first, which fades into malt notes of stone fruit and blackberry. No obvious hops flavors. Dry finish. There was a distracting metallic note after the initial pour, but it faded away as the beer warmed and breathed.

F - Medium to thin body. Low carbonation. No alcohol burn. Medium hops bitterness and low sourness in the finish.

O - This is an interesting and enjoyable sour beer, but disappointing as a stout. It lacks a base of malt and roastiness that are the halmarks of a stout.

Nice flavour. Not licorice-y, which is nice for a change. Dark chocolate tones.

I don't see any date on this so I have no idea how old it is.

Appearance: The head on this thing is massive. Even before I poured the beer it was foaming out of the bottle. The humongous head is fluffy and brown. It is billowy like a glass of brown clouds. Tons of head retention and it does leave good lacing. The body is black.

Aroma: It has this strong sweet candy sugar aroma. You can smell it at a distance. There is a good deal of caramel aroma as well.

Taste: Right up front there is a toasted caramel flavor with a bit of a smoky character without any harsh burnt flavor. It's very well done. This sweet candy and caramel flavor lingers in the middle of the palate. It's a bit like a tootsie roll pop but just the candy outside. The aftertaste is a bit more of that smokey and slightly woody flavor.

Mouthfeel: Very Smooth and easy to drink but highly carbonated. The sweetness tends to to hamper drinkability a bit too. It has a nice medium yet effervescent finish. Medium bodied and semi-sweet finish.

Overall: So this is not your traditional Export Stout. It has a lot more flavor and character. It is also significantly sweeter than what you will normally find. This beer obviously shows its Belgian roots and gives its own take on the style. I like it. I would absolutely buy it again when I'm looking to appease a malty sweet tooth. I recommend it.

There are brewers who are overly-passionate, but still sane.
There are brewers who are crazy, but insanely great.
With the "Mad Brewers" at DeDolle, we probably are dealing with the second line.
This is like a strong stout for export, but then it is not... it adds all this Belgian stuff, particularly a yeast that throws off flavors not found in the traditional rendition of the style.
This beer is fun... and will never be properly pigeon-holed.

MJ's "Great Beers of Belgium" has a photo of this luscious stout poured, but then it doesn't get reviewed.
Is it possible the Great Master was speechless ?
Suddenly, I don't feel so inadequate for not reviewing this beer.
