Oerbier, brewed in Esen by De Dolle Brouwers, is dark due to the mixture of different types of malt and hours of cooking time. Only 'Golding' bubble hop from Poperinge is used and all our beers are bottled with secondary fermentation.

It is the first beer of De Dolle Brouwers and officially dates from 1980.

The name refers to the originality and purity of the beer. The specific gravity of the wort is 1078, the alcohol percentage 9%. Oerbier has a slightly fresh acidity due to the yeast and lactic acid bacteria. The beer will experience a slight taste evolution and will become vinous. Samples of the first brew, which are still perfectly drinkable, are kept in the brewery.

Re-rated 05-21-2011. Although classed here as Belgian Strong Dark, IMO Oerbier is Flanders Oud Bruin rather than BSDA.
Effervescent, deep coppery body with good clarity and streams of uprising bubbles that support the thick beige, dense head that holds extremely well and clings to the walls with each swirl. The nose is utterly complex with malt of caramel and toast-like character, unrefined sugar, mild red wine-like sourness, plum-like and raisiny esters, apple, minor spicy phenols and a whiff alcohol. Some sherry notes in the background indicating the beer has undergone some aging.
Flavor is a bit overpowering alcohol warmth, followed by caramel-sweet malt, fruity tartness with vinous notes and towards the medium-dry finish pronounced bitterness with earthy overtones, probably derived from usage of Golding hops. The medium-light body tends to foam in the mouth due to its high effervescence.
Overall, too alcoholic and overly carbonated to be given top-scores. (330 ml, bottled Oct 2010, BB Oct 2012, into tulip)

I had this on draft 1/30/24 @ the Hopleaf.

Opaque dark brown appearance.

Big tan head; minimal lacing remained.

Brown sugar & mild tart strawberry notes in the nose.

Medium mouthfeel.

Acorn, mild tart strawberry & oak flavors; booze heat emerged as this warmed.

Interesting, complex & tasty. I loved this!

Murky brown colour, slightly tan head. Smell is fruity with a hint of acidity. Dark and red fruit. Taste is the same with just enough sourness for me. Cold its still very full of flavour and refreshing. Liked it a lot more than expected

Purchased from Plonk in Fyshwick in August 2023 and drunk in September that year.

L: Rusty brown with maroon tinges. Thin, cream-coloured head. There is no visible carbonation.

S: Sweet, jammy fruitcake. Cherries. Very interesting!

T: Strawberry jam, cherries, fruit cake. Delicious and moreish. Alcohol is present but pleasant and adds to the beer.

M: Rich and full, matching the flavour profile.

O: Very nice!

Cheers!

330ml bottle into a tulip. Bottled February 2019, so over 4 years old.

Looks splendid, dark reddish brown body with a persistent off white head leaving gobs of lacing. Musty fruit aroma. Taste is sweet and a little tart with tons of dark fruit and a winey note. Aged beautifully. Abv well hidden.

Foggy amber color, minimal head. Smell is sweet, with figs, honey, cranberry, oak, and orange peel. Taste is sweet and tart. Upfront caramel and toasted malt quickly becomes tart cranberry, apple, and grape, with hoppy notes and oak. There’s a bit of lingering bread on the finish as well. Feel is a bit chalky, with a nice alcohol presence. Wonderful complexity and balance.
