Deep orange colored body...aroma of cinnamon and pumpkin meat. Taste is not too spiced except in the finish. overall a nice pumpkin ale albeit slightly expensive.

La Scie Trouillarde is a play on the word "citrouille", french for 'pumpkin'. The 'Double' part I shouldn't need to explain, though you might notice that this walnut wood coloured ale is twice as dark than customary pumpkin beers. Only against the light can one see any orange at all.

When it comes to Pumpkin Ales, spices aren't up for debate. They're necessary. The question becomes: which ones to use and how much of them. This one is tastefully done - it's not overly perfumy but evokes thoughts of warm holiday baked treats and has a heavenly brown sugar-like sweetness to boot.

Ironically enough, the use of actual pumpkin is optional. It makes the cut here, at least on the ingredients list; you don't really taste it on the palate. And perhaps that's for the better, especially given the delicious gingerbread, apple crumble and pumpkin pie flavours. It's all my fall-time favourites!

The mouthfeel, however, reminds me of a weakly steeped chai tea. It's very dry and lacks lasting power. Nutmeg, cardamon, cinnamon, fennel and allspice notes invade the taste briefly but it's all brown sugar in the finish. It balances the sweet and spicy seamlessly and masks the alcohol entirely.

I'm not sure whether we are to interpret 'Double' to mean 'Dubbel', but this drinks a lot like an Abbaye brune. It has that classic rich malt and dried fruit profile, albeit here the notion of baking spice stems from actual baking spices. The style adapts incredibly well to a pumpkin ale recipe.

La Scie Trouillarde Double is an offering I greatly enjoy. I can think of few better options for when the days shorten, the air chills, and the leaves turn colour. This belongs in your fridge like pumpkins do on your porch. Leave the bite-size chocolate bars for the kids, treat yourself to this instead.

Poured into a flute type glass. Was bottled 01/10/12.

A: Pours a light brown, caramel colour, cloudy, with an off white/caramel head that builds up to a decent frothy head, then leaving a nice lacing on top afterwards.

S: Light pumpkin on the nose, with also a mild amount of spice, nutmeg, cloves, citrus peel...

T: Malty, sweet, honeyish flavours at the start, followed by a slightly bitter/hoppy, very mild pumpkin flavour, with light traces of spices, more nutmeg and something else, allspice or something...also some alcohol taste there. Everything is pretty light with this one.

M: Medium carbonation, very light body. This one is very smooth but almost a bit watery for something rated at 7% and goes day way too easy.

O: Our last pumpkin/spiced beer of the season. Hard to comment on the flavours as everything is quite light and the hops almost start to dominate and over power the spices. Could do with just more body I feel, which perhaps as it warms the alcohol would help balance this one out a beer or bring out more flavours. Not a bad beer overall, but hard to say it is too spiced or too pumpkin, it just needs to either go one way, or perhaps with a bit more malt complexity it would be a nicely balanced fall beer. There isn't a lot of Quebec breweries doing this style of beer, so if you live in the province, it's worth trying, but not something to get too excited about.

Bottle: Poured a pale light orangey color ale with a nice thick foamy head with good retention and some lacing. Aroma of light pumpkin and light cloves notes is interesting. Taste is a mix between a lightly sweet malt bill with some notes of pumpkin and light cinnamon and cloves notes. Body is quite full with good carbonation and no apparent alcohol. A bit too much pumpkin in the forefront for my taste but very enjoyable nonetheless.
