If you find yourself in Jacksonville, Alabama, and you're looking for good local beer and good local BBQ, this is definitely the place to hit up. You can smell the BBQ smoke from the moment you step out of the car. A rustic looking wood-siding "shack," the bar has a small main floor, a tight bar, and a quaint attic space upstairs. Old license plates and graffiti (done in sharpies and presumably an intentional part of the decor) cover the exposed rafters.

The beer selection is very modest (maybe six craft beers), but for the area, it's quite good. A nice selection of local beers from Alabama and Mississippi were on draft.

As for the food, the ribs are excellent. I strongly recommend the 1/4 stack of ribs, dry rubbed, with the spicy sauce (though I understand mild is pretty good too). They fall right off the bone, and had truly excellent flavors. I had a side of greens which was a little less exciting (it was boiled), but it was good all the same.

Worth going, without a doubt!

I was kind of shocked to see this on the Jacksonville listings, and can't remember if I added to the BeerFly or not. Now that I think about it, my waiter last time was very excited about beer and he may have been the culprit. Well doesn't matter, its here and it needs to be.

Cooter Browns is an awesome little rib shack. I say little because it is tiny. Maybe six stools at the bar, 5 tables downstairs and maybe 6 upstairs. Its tiny and it looks like a hole from the outside. Its rustic and has its charm for sure.

Lately they have been getting more and more beer focused. Adding a good amount of bottles of craft to the old BMC roster. The taps have been ever improving by adding such brews as Terrapin IBA and Lazy Magnolia Southern Pecan. This used to be one of the only places to get liquor in town due to crazy Jacksonville laws, but it is nice to see that they are now focused on good beer as well. Plus a little rustic charm they add as well is they serve up the draft brews in Mason jars. I know some beer folks might find this a bad thing, but I enjoy it.

The service here can be a bit off sometimes but usually there are only two servers and a bartender, and they are working their asses off. A little patience goes a long way.

The food is always amazing. They are known throughout the area as an awesome place for their ribs and bbq. They have great bbq entrees and then good snack apps like bbq nachos (awesome with the spicy bbq sauce and a brew).

I love this place and I think it has only gotten better since my college days here in Jacksonville. Its worth a stop and the wait for some good beer and great ribs.
