Notes / Commercial Description:
Ünderground is a view into Orlison's darker side. Brewed with ample amounts of roast barley and black malt, this is a truly unique stout lager.

This 6.2% ABV lagers full, slightly opaque tan head releases its powerful flavor. This stout distinguishes itself from the everyday, run-of-the-mill beer through sheer tenacity and originality. Stop drinking beer in the light. Go Ünderground and enjoy the dark.

Thought I'd reviewed this already, but I'd only posted a quick rating based on a sample I'd tried at the brewery.

16oz can purchased at Huckleberry's in Spokane for a little over $2. No freshness date.

Poured a virtually pitch-black color, with a modest, beige-colored head that dropped rather quickly.

Malty nose, with dominant notes of chocolate and coffee, plus milder ones of a nutty nature.

Chocolaty and coffeeish flavors, with a moderate hoppy zap at the finish. Very stout-like. Besides the clean, lagery finish, this tastes just like a typical American stout, or maybe an Export Stout (in deference to it's 6%+ abv.).

Full bodied, with a coating yet clean-finishing mouthfeel. Hybrid mouthfeel all the way.

I understand why whoever added this beer to BA classified it as a schwartzbier, I really do - but it's such a limiting description, presumably based more on color than anything else (except the fact that there isn't a more accurate category in existence on this site). This beer makes a case for the establishment of a stout lager category, as it's unlike any other beer I've tried. This might be the most extreme juxtaposition of ale vs. lager I have had. All the flavors generally found in a stout, but it's a lager! An impressive beer.

16 oz can served in a snifter.

Looks enticing, with a large, creamy, durable, tan head over an opaque, dark brown body. Plenty of sticky lacing gets left on the glass.
Dark roasted grains with some dank and faintly off notes. The flavor follows, albeit a bit better than the aroma suggests. Very dark roasted grains impart a touch of smoke and char, particularly in the finish and aftertaste.
Feel: smooth, medium body with relatively high but soft carbonation.

Overall: disappointing and possibly infected.

Pours two fingers of tan head on a black body. Looks great.
The aroma is chocolate, a little burnt malt and ripe fruit.
The taste loaded with burnt and roasted malt. The bitterness right in perfectly. The finish has the slightest sweetness.
Medium body with some fizz but moderate carbonation overall.
Well done.

A: Pours a clear, almost opaque extremely dark brown approaching jet black in color with moderate amounts of active visible carbonation along the edges of the glass and very faint dark cola brown highlights. The beer has a three finger tall dense sudsy foamy dark tan head that very slowly reduces to medium sized two finger thick cap in the center of the glass surrounded by a thick layer covering the remainder of the surface of the beer and a thick ring at the edges of the glass. Significant amounts of lacing are observed.

S: Just shy of moderate aromas of roasted and charred malts with a hint o earthy hops.

T: Upfront there is a moderate to strong flavor of dark roasted and charred malts with a hint of ash. Light to moderate flavors of freshly ground coffee and dark chocolate and a light amount of earthy hops. Moderate to strong amounts of roasty bitterness which linger for quite a while.

M: Medium bodied with moderate to slightly heavier than moderate amounts of carbonation. Light to moderate amounts of dryness in the finish.

O: Enjoyable and easy to drink with very well hidden alcohol. Nice roasty flavors and aromas with the slightly lighter mouthfeel of a lager for this "stout lager" but I thought it was quite successful.

Creamy and sudsy after each pour with a large foamy cap. Dark brown with a reddish tint. Big carbonation on the tongue with a winey mouthfeel. Intriguing nose of cereal and slightly charred wood.

This has the slightly smoky sweet tang of a Stout, but the brewer insists it's a lager. So think of this as a big and bold Schwarzbier that for some reason has been hopped up. So call it what you like. Some woody edginess. Serious black malt and roasted barley flavors. Finishes dark roast coffee taste. This is grainy and bitter but saved by that malty richness.

Quite drinkable and interestingly hard to categorize. From the 16 oz can purchased at Special Brews in Lynnwood, Washington.

Poured from 16oz tall can into a pint glass. The brewers call this a "stout lager", so schwarzbier seems as good a category as any.

Appearance: extremely dark brown with amber highlights when held up to the light. The body appears to be haze-free and the head pours two fingers of fluffy tan foam. Quite good.

Smell: yeasty craft-lager aroma with a light dose of roasty malt character. Not too bad, though it feels muddled.

Taste: bitter and roasty up front, with a little bit of a chocolatey character and a dose of vegetal hops. Individual flavors are good, but they lack harmony together.

Mouthfeel: light body with a decent carbonation and creaminess for the style.

Overall: this is a perfectly decent beer, though one I probably won't revisit.

This was an extra in a trade with Woemad, Thank You!

This brew poured dark brown with ruby hues with a massive light khaki colored head. Well looks pretty! The aroma is very light with cocoa and roasted malts. Faint fruity esters with a hint of licorice. Smells good to me! The taste should show me what this brew is all about! First hits of roasted malt complexity. Coffee, cocoa mild hint of licorice. Right amount of residual sugar sweetness and some fruit notes toward the finish. This beer finishes Big!, dry and bitter, (picture coffee bitter and hop bitter to form a big yet balanced bitter). Lingering burnt sugar and coffee in the aftertaste. The feel on the brew is medium-light with cola like carbonation.

Overall: Time for me to nitpick....sorta. This brew is very good! The appearance, great! The aroma, on point! The flavor double check! I enjoy all this brew has to offer. The thing that sets it from being an everyday drinker is the cola like carbonation. I can dig Belgian brews..we all know what to expect in the carbonation department. Yet this one, I don't know, just seems forced or over carbonated. There's nothing really negative to say about this brew. I really dig the aftertaste. The burnt sugar reminds me of eating marshmallows that have been camp fire singed. You know what I mean? With a cup of coffee as a chaser. All in all this brew is worthy!

On nitro.

Pours black with 2" of tannish foam.

Smell is of coffee, dark chocolate and heavy on the roast,

The taste is a mix of both dark and milk chocolate leaning more towards the former. That and the coffee and roasted malt give this brew a decidedly bitter taste overall.

Smooth creamy mouthfeel.

This is delicious!

im just okay on this one, my first from orlison, its a stout lager they call it, which to me demands the body of a stout. this is far lighter than that, although the lager yeast dries it out really nicely, and i am not used to such an interjection of quickness in the bitter end to a roasty beer like this. tremendous malt depth, but it doesnt have the body to it, which i really miss in the stout context. in the dark lager context this is far better, roast and coffee notes, some german malt, a fizzy mouthfeel, and a snappy finish uncommon in dark beer. i love the idea, but the execution is only pretty good, not outstanding. i liked some of the other orlison beers a little better, but this is a nice sesisonable beer with plenty of dark malt characteristics that make it a crowd pleaser i think for both sides of the spectrum.
