Notes: This extraordinary and sparkling "DeUs, Brut des Flandres", brewed with barley, is fermented and matured in Belgium, refermented in the bottle, followed but the traditional "remuarge" and "dégorgement" in France. Serve chilled (2 - 4º C) and pour gently into a chilled flute or chalice glass.

Huge foamy head that fades away and lacing becomes non-existent. Clear yellow color.

Smell is champagne like. Tart green apple, grapes, and banana comes out on the nose.

Taste is dry. The beer has some belgian qualities and is spiced with coriander. However, it has absorbed some champagne-like characteristics. Sweet fruitiness comes through of sweet grapes and green apples. Alcohol is somewhat apparent at 11.50%.

Mouthfeel is somewhat dry like champagne but not nearly as full.

Not a hard beer to drink. It could go well with some sharp cheeses. It could also go well with some fish. The food pairing suggestion suggests meat as well, but I do not think it would be a good pairing.

Poured into a champagne flute, beautiful pale gold color with a fizzy head,
sweet, herbal aroma,
very clean, herbal flavor, slightly bitter, honestly don't care for the taste much but its interesting,
crisp and bubbly,
very cool beer to try but $$$, I didn't buy this beer but would NEVER pay the >$36 it cost at the LBS

Pours golden with a champagne-like white head that, after a short while, becomes a lasting, thin cover. Some lacing is left. The rapid stream of carbonation continues throughout the drink.

The smell is of a vague, musty, sweet-tartness. The aroma is light - you almost have to search for it, but, once found, it's decent for the style.

The taste is of robust, musty sweet-tart candy. Sour apples are noticeable. The tartness lingers throughout. There are hints at tropical fruits, but they are restrained. It reminds me of a mix between a dry, fruity champagne and a decent (but not outstanding) biere de garde. The earthy mustiness mingles with the tartness throughout the drink.

It's medium-bodied with a fair amount of bubbles. Pretty smooth - not as sprtizy as I expected, but it works well enough. A drying effect is left.

Bottom line - It's decent if you are looking for a tart/sour Belgian with some champagne-like qualities. But, it's not worth $25+ a bottle.

25oz. bottle

WARNING: My first review of a Biere de Champagne -- Take with a grain of salt, and maybe a lime....

Poured out a crystal clear, honey gold liquid. It was capped by a large, rocky, white colored head. Had some legs. Gorgeous looking drink.

Smell was spicy -- clove and coriander. Then sweet, seemed like candi sugar. Herbal notes tried to balance sweetness. Some citrus. A bit of the classic Belgian funk.

Taste was very sweet, too much so for me. Consisted of over ripe cantaloupes and peaches, some honey as well. Medicinal/phenolic notes were present, and I didn't find them pleasant. Herbal at the finish, but really didn't do much to balance out the sweetness. A bit hot, as well.

Medium body. Highly carbonated, and quite dry. I've drank enough champagne to recognize what they might have been shooting for here, and I think they actually overshot. This struck me as almost astringent.

Overall, a nice beer if you like them really sweet in flavor, and really dry in mouthfeel. Not to my taste, unfortunately. It would probably go quite well with sushi.

so I've seen this on the bro's review and thought I should try that just so I can see for myself some day. well, that day finally presented itself during dinner out in Las Vegas last night.

A - noted many times but it's definitely a champagne clone. Mine was served in a DeuS champagne flute. Very nice presentation.

S - rich light sweet Belgian malts and a spicy light ripe fruit aroma.

T - as one who doesn't care for a champagne, this one tastes similar without that grape / wine aspect. rich warm sweet malt flavors swirl around the sides of my mouth while the roof of my mouth and tongue are hit with an onslaught of bubbles which create an amazing effervescent flavor swirl.

M - medium bodied, champagne crazy carbonation. Wow what a mouthfeel effect!

D - I loved how this drank as it warmed up. The bubbles lasted the full bottle and it really was a treat. I think this should be new years eve, not the champagne tradition.

When I ordered this my server was blown away. Apparently they don't sell it often and it was off limits for staff tasting. So as a BA I offered to share a glass and wound up having a fun conversation with both my waiter and the bar manager responsible for bringing in this treat.

Pours very straw to pale gold with a champagne like liveliness with a thick soapy 2” foam cap that quickly dissipates. Clean fruit and floral aromas and taste with a slight hint of sweetness and some definite white wine qualities. The perception oscillates between a sparkling wine and a beer and you swing between the yeast driven fruit flavors and the light malts. Very effervescent, medium light body. Very refreshing.

A: Bright clear golden hue. White head that leaves virtually no lacing. Very light looking.

S: Very clean scent. Floral and sweet aromas. Subtle lemon quality as well.

T: First few sips this seemed kind of odd, but subsequent sips I started to enjoy it. Different for sure. Very light and spritzy. Floral and mildly sweet citrus accents.

M: High level of carbonation, which to me is a good thing. Very light and easy to drink; belies the 11.5 ABV.

D: It may be easy to drink in regards to taste and complexity, but the ABV will knock your socks off. In addition, the odd floral accents might get tiresome after a while. Good beer/champagne hybrid, but between the price and the style, it's not something to have frequently. Good for celebrating something, and/or as a conversation piece at a party.

750 mL bottle from Abe's in Bethlehem for $24. 2005 vintage shared with friends after a 1.5 L bottle of Freixenet. Popped it open, no gushing (phew). Poured a very rich and vibrant gold, like honey with big bubbles streaming up from the bottom of the flute. Very impressive to look at.

Smell is kind of sweet, but a malty sweetness that reminds you that this is still beer. Also a bit of minty/medicinal smell in there too which my friends didn't like, but i didn't mind. The taste was similar, with that minty/medicinal flavor coming out again. Mouthfeel was light and dry with just enough carbonation, not overdone. I ended up drinking most of the bottle since my two friends didn't really like it, so you know it is drinkable. Price is a bit high and i didn't like it enough to probably ever buy it again, but very unique and i am glad to have tried it. Definately better than the Freixenet, and an awesome bottle for the collection.

A - Three fingers of bone white head that settles quickly and leaves some lace. The body is a nice golden color, clear with lots of buoyant bubbles rising to the surface.

S - Spicy, dry malt character; champagne like and peppery.

T - Creamy vanilla notes with white pepper and a slight sourness. Lemon and some earthy hops in the finish.

M - Creamy body, very high carbonation, and a fairly dry finish.

D - The body is the best feature of this beer. It is not as sour as I expected, but still quite champagne like. This is definitely a special occasion beer; not just because of the price, but also because it just isn't very drinkable.

From notes, [email protected], this stuff has been getting really popular (I have seen it on tv) and has been selling out fast, I see it more and more at different places at going for what I perceive to be retarded prices. I feel like most people buy it not because of the taste but because of the perceived luxury, same as with Champagne for many. I have been asked by many people how it tastes like, I always say, cheap Champagne, if you want Champagne, buy that, if you want beer, get something else. This was the first Champagne beer that I tried, I have tried a second one since then, Malheur Cuvée Royale, if you have the luxury of choosing between the two, get that one.

The instructions suggest to try it as cold as possible, I tried it both really cold and at +/- 15 °C and indeed you need to drink this as cold as possible, it is worse warm, I feel like you need to kill the taste a bit by drinking it that insanely cold.

A: pale yellow, clear, heavy carbonated, bubbling white head
S: strong smell, yeast, apples, grapes (bit like white wine, muscat?), lemon peel, nectar/flowers mixed with cheap no-brand lemon soda
T: I am thinking of Champagne mixed with a Belgian Pale Ale, Champagne yeast (which I personally don't like & dominates too much for me) followed by Belgian yeast in the aftertaste, noticeable alcohol, spices, sourness, if someone told me that this was Champagne, I would have believed him or her but it is Champagne with an off taste
M: like Champagne, lots & lots of carbonation, too much for a beer, light body
D: didn't enjoy it much but I had no difficulty drinking it, I still say that you either buy Champagne or a different beer, if you must try this style, try to look for Malheur Cuvée Royale, cost is too much I got it for 12 € and I felt that, that was way too much and that was on the low end of the spectrum for this beer.

Cuvee Prestige 2002:

Pouring this ale produces a huge, densely foamy white head that very slowly fizzles down. The body is a very clear, straw yellow displaying champagne-esque carbonation. Head retention is unexpectedly good.

The nose of this beer is quite unique and exciting. A potent blend of coriander and caraway seeds mix with lingering saffron for quite an exotic spice presence. Some sweet, sugary aromas blend with warming alcohol and faint ginger for nice complexity.

Much like the nose, an exotic blend of coriander, black pepper, saffron and caraway seed flavors start this beer quite strong. A slight blurb of alcohol hits at the midpoint of a sip. The finish soon approaches with a quick burst of sweetness. This fine beer closes with another short burst of alcohol and the remnants of the initial spice flavor. Lingering grape flavors join as this warms.

The mouthfeel of this beer is naturally carbonated which actually feels strong from the spice presence. The carbonation level matches this beer perfectly and is simply unmatched by any other.

Drinkability is quite good given the strong flavor profile of this beer. Most definitely a sipping beer and a bottle would serve four perfectly. In terms of cost, I can't really say that it is worth it but this is one luxurious beer for sure. Cost aside, this will be a New Year celebration tradition for me.

Poured with a strong head that grew fast even with a gentle pour. Bubbles race up similar to champagne and keep the head there through the whole glass. Lots of lacing.

Aroma was had alot going on. Sweet and herbal w/ some fruit in there. My nose first picked up rosemary, basil, and after alot of thinking, a strong sweet smell of scallops. Seems offputting but it worked and it took me awhile to come up with that because, after all, who looks for scallops in beer? Had a good funk in the nose also.

Scallops didn't show up on the palate but the funk and sweetness did. Some spice, coriander, basil, and earthyness in the flavor along with some funk that wasn't overpowering but always there. The many layers in the taste were not as strong on the palate as they were in the nose, but they were still there.

Never noticed the alcohol and I finished most of the bottle myself. The complexity of this beer jumped out at me, nothing subtle about many of the aromas and, to a lesser degree, the flavors. A great beer that I'm glad i had the chance to try, but the price will keep me from enjoying it again in the near future.

Decanted into my most excellent Duvel chalice
Appearnce was good, clean, quickly dissolving head, but quit clear and yellow. Almost looks like a Bud in the glass
Smelled pretty good. A faint hint of spiciness, wine, and yeast. Although I have a cold right now, so that may have detraced a bit
Taste was very good. Bitter, sour, sweet all in one. A bit of buttery tofee flavor that coats the inside of the mouth and remains through the swallow.
Mouthfeel is unbelievable. Smooth, despite the sour tones, It coats the mouth and throat and makes for a very delightful experience.
Drinkability is off the charts. If this was any less of a beer I would have rated drinkabilty very low because of the price tag, but this beer is just so damn good. It's going to be hard to tell my girlfriend that I spent this much on 1 single beer, but fuck that. This stuff is amazing.
