The Ledig Erf is located in one of the best areas of the city. Just outside the city center, the Erf shares a big open area with a couple other bars and a large art house movie theater. The Erf got lucky in that they own the biggest terrace area in the city, and on a nice afternoon it gets plenty of sun and is a perfect spot to enjoy a few.

If you're not in the mood for the patio and picknick tables, the inside is the definition of the Dutch word "gezellig." Old wodden decor, a lounge area in the back, and a selection of board games in the corner, you can spend hours here and feel like you're in your living room. If you're on the couches in the evening, the cat might even make you his resting spot.

The bottle selection is average for a "beer bar." All the usual Belgian suspects are there, including the trappists and top abbey ales, but there is nothing overly special and they normally don't have any guest bottles. Their tap range is relatively small, but they're solid offerings and several rotate regularly. Every month they get a new beer that's never been on tap in Holland before, which is always interesting.

The service depends a little on how busy it is. If you're inside, no problem. They guys and gals keep a pretty good run of their bar and are relatively attentive, getting things out quickly. If you're on the patio and it's busy, expect to wait a while, especially in the afternoon when there aren't as many people working. You might have more luck going inside, ordering, paying, then bringing them out yourself. The staff is doing the best they can, but it's a big patio and it can get busy unexpectedly.

The Erf serves some small snacks and platters, but no sandwiches or meals, so eat beforehand. The snacks are pretty tasty and well concieved actually, especially the quich, but they're not going to satisfy the requirement for a sponge.

This place is about a 15 minute walk from the more well-known Cafe Belgie. While Belgie is definately the place to go if you simply want a large selection to chose from, the Erf gets the nod for its homely atmosphere and superb outside seating area in the warmer months of the year.
