They have a selection of somewhat interesting beers, usually priced $6-8 for a pint. They never have anything really rare, but it's a nice local bar for people who work in mid-town west who are looking for a happy hour drink.
The bar is also a Philadelphia sports bar, so if you are going on a gameday, be prepared for that.
Most of the choices here are widely available at local craft beer stores, but there simply aren't too many places in the area in NYC where you can get a decent beer, so I can't complain too much.
It's a small place, a bar and maybe 10 tables, a few tvs and an always friendly staff.
Their beermenus page is not always updated and interesting kegs are kicked quickly so i wouldn't recommend going there for a specific beer.

*An update on Shorty's beer menu*: the good beer managers are gone, and so are the great beers at Shorty's. They still have 20+ taps and decent stuff from Dogfish, Sierra, Weyerbacher, Stone and else, but the rarities (Mikkeller, Hill Farmstead, Allagash Curieux, Double Simcoe) are gone. Sad, sad... the selection is only "OK" now.
*A little re-reviewing... bumping up the ratings on selection*
Recently (as of Spring 2011), Shorty's has been featuring some stunning beers, such as Firestone Walker Double Jack, Allagash Curieux, Weyerbacher Heresy and Merry Monks, Sierra Hoptimum, Sierra Torpedo, Flying Dog Gonzo Imperial Porter, Mikkeller... Yeah! Keep it up!
---
Shorty's (formerly Tony Luke's) serves the only authentic Philly cheesesteak in NYC. Everything else anywhere in the city is but a crude imitation.
So you should come here for the sandwich and stay for the beer. Or come for the beer and stay for the sandwich! This place has had many shapes and incarnations, and about two years ago it took in the current form: a small, narrow place with a long bar and some tables on the side.
Because this is still somewhat of a hidden treasure (and maybe because it is in the most gloriously unsavory block of Hell's Kitchen-Times Square), Shorty's never gets crowded. Except for those times when Philly plays... for being cozy but not crazy I give it high marks on atmosphere.
There are about 20-25 taps, and at least 10 of them are of a very good quality. The former bar manager there loved craft beer and kept a very interesting line-up. Now that he has left, the stuff is a bit less crazy but still very good. You'll see Ommegang, Dogfish 60 or 90, Sixpoint, always two handles for Unibroue, beers from small East Coast breweries...
Food is very close to exceptional, simply because they make the best and only cheesesteak in town. That's it. Period.
Service is always friendly and efficient, and the joint is cozy and neighborhood-y. Prices are a lil' high for the beer, like seven bucks for a pint of Dogfish 60. Most beers are $6-$7, and I wish they were $5 but hey, this is NYC, right... out-of-control town but we love her anyways.
They do have specials, though, like dollar-off during happy hour and $9 bucks for a shorty (one-half of a cheesesteak) and a beer.
If you're a local, you know it already. If you're a tourist, come at least once! I love Shorty's!

Came across this place tracking down Hill Farmstead Double Galaxy.
Philly themed bar, with all high tops and seats at the bar. Fairly small place, not sure if I'd want to be at this place when it gets super crowded. I was there at lunchtime on a Friday and there weren't more than 20 customers in there and it was definitely crowed.
Decent stuff on tap. Hitachino Red Rice, Double Galaxy, Great Divide 17th Anno Wood Aged, Mikkeler Nugget, few others. 12$ 4 X 4oz tasters.
This bar seems like alot of BMC crowd, struck up a few conversations with regulars and got them to try some better selections. Nice patrons.
The fact that this bar seems more like the place where ppl come to see the game and get specials on BMC, and at best Yuengling makes it a decent stop if you're looking for a rare because a sixtel of Double Galaxy here lasted over a week, when at other places it was kicking in an hour. I didnt mind paying 9$ for my Double Galaxy, but charging 12$ for Hitachino RR, maybe its a pricey keg, that irked me. I didnt get one, but I guess thats NYC.
Nice ppl. Barkeeps were friendly and attentive. They coined me "Boston" bc of my BU hat. Good selections I havent seen around that much. But not really a craft destination in my opinion, I'd drop in here to have specific brews they have on tap, but not sure I'd be coming here if I didn't know they'd have something for me, also doesnt hurt that Pony bar is 5 minute walk.
EDIT:
To give them credit, they have been getting some pretty sikk offerings, Miikeler Beer Geek, Allagash Curieux. Still the atmostphere isnt really beer bar. Started following on twitter to get a heads up of semi rares they'll throw on draft. Worth a stop if you're looking for something nice.

I'll admit it: I'd never had a Philly cheesesteak before. Ever. Shorty's was my first. Of course, I didn't go there for the cheesesteak (although, had I known, I might have), I went there because it was highly up on Beeradvocate's NYC recommended list.
My wife and I hit Manhattan at 2:15 but found out our room wouldn't be ready until 3; happily, Shorty's was just around the corner and was nearly empty, so in no time we had two pints (Ayinger Celebrator Doppelbock and Victory Golden Monkey) in one hand and sandwiches in the other. We moved on to a bunch of tasters (Ommegang Abbey Ale, Arcadia IPA, Palm Belgian Pale, Yuengling Lager, Blue Moon, Arcadia London Porter, Sierra Nevada Celebration and Allagash White) before finishing up with a Narragansett Lager and another Victory Golden Monkey.
Not a bad way to start a weekend in New York.

I stopped in here for a beer and a late-night snack, and was pretty pleased with what I found. The place has sort of a college bar ambiance, but it was friendly, there were TVs to watch, and the wait-staff was pleasant. The tap list was respectable, about 20 beers, including one from the Bruery that I was interested to try. The place specialized in cheese-steaks, which for some reason they insist on putting cheese-whiz on. I tried one, and it was OK. I got pretty ill later on in the evening, but upon reflection, I think that was due to my meal at BXL Belgian Cafe and not here...but the cheese whiz definitely didn't help matters. I thought this was a nice friendly spot where the beer didn't necessarily match the ambiance, but was a nice place nonetheless. Not a must-see certainly, but a place worth stopping if you're wandering down 9th Ave.

This was the first bar I attended on my 21st Birthday and all nostalga aside, after comparing it with the other beer bar's I've visited it's probably the best. They have a huge selection of beers, ranging from Goose Island to Ommegang Abbey Ale (my first legal beer). The service is great, the server's I met (I went twice in a three day span) knew their shit about the beer. As for their cheese-steaks, they're pretty authentic, and pretty damn tasty. I may have discovered the food they serve in Nirvana by ordering their Italian Fries. Well worth a stop if one is ever in the Manhattan area.

Finally a sports bar in NYC that gets it all right.Great atmosphere and even better food.Cheesesteaks are the main draw here and once you are inside you feel welcome and realize it is much more than just a cheesesteak place. Beer selection is great with 22 taps and something for everyone.Top crafts like Ommegang,Troegs,Stoudts...as well as some cool imports like Maudite,Ephimere, and Blanche De Bruxelles.Definetly a great place to watch a game eat great food and drimk great beers. They carry All MLB and NFL games so if you are from out of town and need to see your team this is the place to be.
