Blueberry Berliner WeisseBlueberry Berliner Weisse
Notes: Our Blueberry Berliner Weisse is fermented with a great blueberry puree. This New England approach brings a refreshing blueberry flavor and aroma to a German classic. We feel our approach creates an authentic interpretation of the traditional “mit syrup” or with syrup method of serving this classic summer refresher. We hope you enjoy this unique year round beer.

The CANQuest (tm) is back in action and New CANpshire is now in the crosshairs!

From the CAN: "Our ales are unfiltered, unpasteurized and traditionally made, Best served fresh at 50 - 55 [deg. F] in your favorite glass."; "On July 27, 2013 we tapped a cask of our summer seasonal Berliner Weisse aged on blueberries at the brewers festival we hosted. Word traveled quickly around the fest about how great the blueberry cask conditioned Berliner Weisse had turned out. Soon the tent was filled with happy fest goers holding glasses of our beer!'; "With this special release, we look to recreate that experience for you. We've taken our sour German style wheat ale and fermented it on blueberry puree for a twist on this unique ale. [undersigned] Bill Herlicka, Founder".

I did a little bit of in-CAN agitation and recited an inCANtation before Crack!ing this one open & giving it an inverted Glug. It seemed to work in my favor as I got two-plus fingers of fizzy, foamy, bone-white head with poor retention for my efforts. Color was a slightly-hazy Yellow-Gold (SRM = 4 - 5). Nose had the familiar lemon juicy sour milkiness, but with a tang of blueberries! Mmm. As a kid, blueberry pie was my favorite & this was quite evocative of blueberries. Mouthfeel was thin-to-medium, not watery, but not terribly far beyond it, either. The taste was more tart than sour, which is what I usually get with blueberry in alcohol. The lemoniness put me in mind of blueberry lemonade, especially in the summers on my maternal grandparents' property which abutted a working farm. Fruit was prevalent & we could always help ourselves. My grandmother bought lemons at the store & squeezed the juice for real lemonade, eschewing anything in mix form, except for iced tea. Back to this beer. It was very refreshing, very much in the same vein as that blueberry lemonade. Finish was tart & dry & quite enjoyable.

Thank you KWMiles for the hookup on this. Always excited to try new berliners and a berliner has been the only thing ive really enjoyed from this brewery. Standard can poured into a cervoise, the brew appears a hazy golden color with white cap that fades super fast.

This smells perfume-like with blueberry. Underneath is some funk like plastic/rubber gloves. As it warms up, some sauerkraut emerges.

The taste is tart with perfume-like berry character that doesnt really scream blueberry though thats understandable considering how dainty blueberries are. As it warms up, there is some funky plastic/rubber character im not crazy about.

This is light bodied and modestly carbonated. The can clearly states that blueberry puree was added to this. Im gonna come right out with it and call that bullshit. There is no way in hell you can impart that much fake smelling aroma while imparting ZERO blueberry color to the beer. Besides coming across as false/deceiving, the base beer is a pile of shit and I couldnt finish more than a couple ounces. No beer, ever, should smell/taste like surgical gloves.

Taste is blueberry, lemon, and sour mix. The blueberry is not as pronounced as the raspberry is in their raspberry version. While I prefer their raspberry version better, this is still a welcome change from the every day blueberry beer. Worth getting again.

L: Pours hazy gold with a very slight blueberry tint.
S: Has a tart blueberry nose with traces of lemon.
T: Has a wheaty start quickly followed by blueberry and then a lemony tartness leading to a tart dry finish.
F: Light, refreshing, effervescent and pleasantly tart.
O: This is not as bracingly tart and some Berliner Weisses and some people might find this more approachable.

Poured from a 12oz can into a tulip glass:

Appearance: looks pinkish yellow, with a nice, hazy body. Pours a small, white head that dissipates pretty quickly, leaving no lacing. Lots of little bubbles in the body.

Aroma: some tart, unripe blueberry, with some softer, sweeter notes on the finish. There's actually a pretty nice aroma on this beer. A little bit of wheat in there as well.

Taste: tartness at first, then a little bit of wheat....and a bit of sweetness on the finish. There's a fair amount of lactobacillus here, as the beer has got quite a bit of tartness. It's heavier for a Berliner at 5.5%, so I expected a little more blueberry punch, but it was decent and subtle.

Feel: pretty thin, which is fine for a Berliner, but I think if the carbonation got bumped up a little, it'd be a little better.

Overall: a solid Berliner. Nice blueberry notes, and while it's not something I'll be seeking out when I go to the liquor store, I'd buy it again for sure.

Tap at Tavern in the Square
Light fizzy head almost nothing, cloudy wheat pear color.

Nose brings lots of blueberries, some fresh but more like extract, skin like, some sour wheat and mash, light lemony tartness.

Taste brings lots of blueberry, tart lemony flavors, fair tartness but not super sour, some creamy wheat more creamy than tart in general. Blueberry again some fresh berry and some extract and skin, also green blueberry. Finish is flemmy and mild sour, light acidic bite, light lemony tartness and sticky creamy wheat, no blueberry on the finish.

Mouth is med to light bod, decent carb, mild creamy wheat and flemmy finish, light acidic bite.

Overall ok, not quite what I expect for Berliner, bit too aggressive in general wheat was creamy and not as sour, blueberries are bit too heavy too. Still pretty tasty in general and enjoyable.

Pours a hazed peach color with quickly diminishing head. Aroma of blueberries and sour grains. In the taste, upfront sourness giving way to blueberries. Nicely sour the blueberry notes just balance out. A slight clash of flavor but it settles in. Light bodied and well carbonated. Decent beer all in all definitely a sour beer.

From the 650 ml. bottle dated November 2014. Sample on November 22, 2014.

The pour is about as pale straw yellow as a beer can get to the point of almost being clear. A white fizzy head erupts momentarily.

The aroma is toasted pale malts, wheat and a touch of blueberry. Everything melds together well and nothing overpowers the other.

The body is light.

The taste is all very subtle but the blueberry offsets the sourness of the weisse characteristics in an interesting way. Makes it a tad less sour. Dry finish. Sour/wild ales are not high on my style list but this one is one I could have more often.

A- The blue can pours to a tulip with a slightly hazy pale golden body and a fizzy white cap. That head dies out immediately with nothing to show taking on a soda look. Lacing impossible.

S- Blueberry puree is quite apparent compared to other brews trying to utilize the same fruit. Lactic acid presents lemony notes and something perfumy lays in the backdrop. The berries fade out with time as does much of the aroma.

T- Blueberries take a back seat at this stage and lactic tartness grows just a bit. Sour green apple, raw wheat, funky yeast bread, perfume and grape comes to mind. Some sort of sharp solvent not quite just boozy ethanol either.

MF- Fairly creamy for the style with a very high end carbonation. Comes off crisp with a light overall body and a tart lactic acidity lingering on the palate.

Fairly good at first with each sip some solventy notes come out as the blueberries fade and more generic pale fruit like apple takes over. The tartness saves this one in the end as it masks some of the off flavors beneath. Decent but the raspberry worked out better for them.

64 ounce growler
Served in a beer flute

This beer pours amber in color and is hazy. It has golden highlights and leaves no lacing.

I smell blueberry muffin. I pick up a little tartness.

The taste starts out with a little tart blueberry. The sourness builds with each drink.

Moderate mouthfeel

I find this to be an enjoyable Berliner weisse. It has a nice amount of tartness, and I like blueberries.
