Poured from a 12 oz. can. And yes, that can came courtesy of the captain of the canquest, woodychandler. Has a dark golden/orange color with a 1/2 inch head. Smell is of malts, light fruits. Taste is sour, malts, some grapes, very dry at the finish. Feels medium bodied in the mouth and overall is a decent beer, but one is enough for me.

The CANQuest (tm) is back in action and New CANpshire is now in the crosshairs!
From the CAN: "At White Birch Brewing, our goal is to create great beer for the enthusiast. Each batch is brewed and bottled by hand at our brewery in Hooksett, NH."; "The urge to create is what drives us to be brewers. When that urge strikes, we fire up the kettle and make a small batch ale."; "The story behind each small batch is detailed on our website. We hope you enjoy this look into the passion of what drives us to brew. [undersigned] Dave Herlicka".; "Our ales are unfiltered, unpasteurized and traditionally made. Best served fresh at 50 - 55 [deg. F] in your favorite glass."
Unfiltered means that I have carte blanche to agitate the beer in the CAN before Crack!ing the vent open & that is exactly what I did. Of course, this resulted in a spritz, plus it revealed a brimful craft CAN! Wow. My ungentle Glug raised just over a finger of foamy, fizzy, tawny head with modest retention that soon went away to wispiness. Color was a deeply hazy Amber (SRM = > , < 9). Nose was funky, kind of sour, especially like sour cherries, but not tart since I felt no puckering of my lips. Mouthfeel was thin-to-medium, not watery, but not much beyond it, either. The taste was reminiscent of a Flanders Red, just not as sour or funky. It was very evocative of sour cherries, though. I kind of liked it, despite it being well outside of my CANfort zone. I am sure that the Tart/Sour crowd would pooh-pooh it for not being intense enough, but I had to take an anti-acid reflux pill this morning before I started in, so forgive me if I am thankful for small favors. Finish was dry, but not puckering, although a slug of water did seem to be in order as an acCANpaniment. Phew!

Sparkling muddy bronze with no head.
Smell is rotten apple with caramel.
Taste is slightly tart toasted malt with cherry and apple.
This one is really frothy but light and wet.
2015 vintage.

12oz can poured into a tulip
A: Hazy brownish-orange with a 1/2-finger head that settles in an instant
S: Tons of malt, little else
T: Malt with a light sourness (lemon/sour grape) but little else distinct
M: Light-bodied, malty, slightly sour
O: Nice concept just simple & nothing exciting going on

L: Pours hazy brown with a rapidly dissipating head. Several bubbles cling to the side of the glass but very little bubble action in the beer itself.
S: Musty earthy aromas with some dark sugars, faint toast and traces of dark dried fruit and apple cider. T: Tart fruit hinting of cherry and lemon.
F: Fairly flat, tart with a light body.
O: Refreshing and drinkable.

I'm a big fan of the couple of White Birch beers I've tried, but this was their first miss for me. It isn't awful, just not very good or memorable. Pours a dark honey type color, slightly hazy. No head at all despite an aggressive pour (I've learned to be a hard pourer on their sour beers). Looks really blah, honestly. Smells slightly sweet and earthy, a hint of vinegary sourness under the sweetness. There's a sort of muddled vague sweet flavor that I can't quite place, something along the lines of caramel candy. It's obviously sour, but more like an unripe fruit type sourness, it's kind of subtle. Vinegar-like bite and dryness at the finish. Feel is very light and pleasantly prickly from the carbonation. This beer is just kind of off and doesn't come together nicely.

Admittedly, I am a very easy grader when rating beers, there's just so much to love about craft beers, and I have enjoyed many White Birch beers, but this beer was an atrocious drain pour. I'm glad I only bought one can. this is the kind of beer that gives sours a bad reputation, and I LOVE sour beer. I'll go buy some White Birch Berliner Weisse to wash away the memory of this beer!

thanks to jackie for picking this up for me
Translucent caramel brown color. I tried to leave most of the yeast in the bottle but it's a bumpy ride from the hubbub of Somerville to the bucolic pastures of Marshfield. No foam at all.
Smells like when I mix fish sauce and soy sauce when making pad Thai.
Taste is caramel up front with a big tart middle and a less sweet caramel fade. Steely mineral-ness.
Worst White Birch I've ever had.
