Style: American Black Ale

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 7.00%

Availability: Fall

Notes / Commercial Description:
Adam Romanow is our third brewer apprentice. His release is an exploration into a newer beer style, the Black IPA. Black as night, bitter, with a full flavored Cascade hop profile and smooth finish.

Named after Nyx, the mythological Greek goddess of night, who stood at the beginning of creation. As a beginning, we agree Adam is on to something. As he moves on, we raise a toast and hope you enjoy his beer as much as we do.

It pours a nice dark black giving about a full one inch foamy tan head in my pint glass. Lacing coats the glass in a perfect full foaminess. The smell has chocolate, coffee, hops and roasted malts all combined very nicely. The taste is sweet and bitter in different aspects but still combined nicely as well. The palate is fairly heavy, but also could be closer to medium. Some acceptable harshness on the tongue as it should be considering the style of the beer. Overall, this is a very nice black ale that I would come back to.

A pretty good offering....you have to gently pour this one or you will have a mess on your hands....I get mainly a coffee and hoppy taste...I would buy this again.

DATE: February 24, 2017... OCCASION: enjoying Will’s tenth birthday sleepover from a distance after taking in GameChanger Wrestling in the Meadows... GLASSWARE: Howard’s Pub pint... pours an intimidating black body befitting its name, with rocky pock-marked brown head that eventually settles to a quarter-finger’s worth of marshy bubbles.... produces on first sniff a woody, pulpy character akin to entering a lumber yard--dank and with the suggestion of toasted oats, caramel, and light, distant citrus... I do not pick up the Cascade as significantly as pronounced on the label, though... full-bodied, coffee-like in its throat feel, heavy with hazy, boozy aftertaste yet actively vibrating the teeth... doesn’t feign an effort to hide the alcohol, but though this beer isn’t oversized, it nonetheless feels right... chewy? yes, and lingering as a sludge pile might ooze... the toasted sweetness comes through loud and clear; the dankness also is appreciable... some soot and char is exhaled, so much so that the experience is more akin to a porter than the style would have us believe... a creamy finish makes for a willing return sip--this is a buzz-worthy beer, and one I am glad came back into circulation, though I stumbled upon it through a breakpack mix box... worthwhile and worth seeking out...

Poured from the can into a Spiegelau IPA glass.

Dark mahogany brown, with barely half a finger of tan white head being created. Leaves a good thick collar, but also pours a little sludgey out of the can. Spotted lacing with a bit of swirling, giving some legs.

Aroma is of thick dark chocolate malt, and a good slight peanut butter cookie like quality. Slight pine but also a bit of heat of booze as well. Hop profile is not really apparent on this.

Palate is quite a bit deadened. Very watery body with a light roast. Slight hints of thick malt flavor though in the mid palate but a flattened hop profile and wort like quality proceeds. Slight almost waffery and peanut butter flavor on the aftertaste. Muted hop profile as well, but not boozy tasting as the nose seems to hint at.

While considerably better than other White Birch offerings I've had, this is still not really much to enjoy here.

12 ounce bottle into tulip glass, bottled in 11/2015. Pours fairly pitch black color with a 2 finger dense and rocky tan head with great retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lasts. Nice dense soapy lacing clings around the glass. Fantastic appearance. Aromas of big grapefruit, tangerine, lemon zest, orange peel, pine, dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, caramel, toasted dark bread, light smoke/char, and floral/roasted earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of citrus/pine hops and dark/roast/bready malt notes; with great strength. Taste of big grapefruit, tangerine, lemon zest, orange peel, pine, dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, caramel, toasted dark bread, light smoke/char, and floral/roasted earthiness. Medium pine and roast/char bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of grapefruit, tangerine, lemon/orange peel, pine, dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, caramel, toasted dark bread, light smoke/char, and floral/roasted earthiness on the finish for a while. Damn nice complexity, robustness, and balance of citrus/pine hops and dark/roast/bready malt flavors; with a great roast/hop bitter/sweet balance and zero astringent hop/roast flavors after the finish. Light-moderate dryness from hop/roast bitterness as well. Medium carbonation and medium-full body; with a very smooth, moderately creamy/sticky/resinous, and lightly chalky balanced mouthfeel that is great. Alcohol is very well hidden with only a slight warmth lingering after the finish. Overall this is an excellent Black IPA. All around great complexity, robustness, and balance of citrus/pine hops and dark/roast/bready malt flavors; and very smooth and easy to drink. A very enjoyable offering.

L: Pours bright black crowned by a 2” tan foam cap that dissipates to a thick film. S: Nose – faint chocolate, slight roast T: The beer has a delightful graininess that brings out the chocolate and provides a backbone. No harsh roast or burnt flavors. F: It has average carbonation but it is fine and soft. The body is full but not as full as a porter or a stout. There is a little warming on the end. O: A big, flavorful black ale

All star. This beer surprised me because I'm not usually a fan of black ales. This beer has an amazing about of roasty toasty malts - deep dark chocolate and just enough hop to balance it out.
