California, United States

Style: American Double / Imperial IPA

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 10.40%

Notes / Commercial Description:
Science will try to tell you that the tongue can't detect more than 80 bittering units. This hop centric imperial IPA will not leave you wanting more. At over 100 IBUs, Therapist is surprisingly easy to drink. Big bold hop aromas and flavors of citrus tropical fruit, and pine are bracketed by light malty sweetness that does not overpower. A healthy addition of wheat in the grain bill adds body and mouthfeel.

This hop centric imperial IPA treats you to a heavy dose of hops that won't leave you bitter. Take a seat (you'll need one) and leave your worries to the Therapist.

I'm new to the Dust Bowl brand, but I am quite impressed. There seems to be a new trend in hoppy double and triple IPAs recently and honestly most of them are all exactly the same. Therapist though, has a unique feel to it. It's appearance is a tan to copper coloring, about what you would expect from an IPA. For being as hoppy as it is, the smell of fresh cut grass and vegetation is not overly powering. Its aroma is gentle and somewhat sweet. The taste of this beer is where the real story is... it is very good. Most double and triple IPAs are overpowering and too intense to be enjoyed, whereas Therapist is relatively smooth and sweet, considering it is 10.4% ABV. The mouthfeel is above average, though it does seem to linger on the palette a bit, but nonetheless fresh and sweet. Picked this up on a whim while visiting Northern California and for $7.99 for a 22 oz. bottle, I do not feel let down. Having never even heard of Dust Bowl, I give them props on a great product and look forward to seeing if they get bigger.

Big, Boozy, Fruity, Hoppy

There’s some chill haze here, but Therapist drops bright and golden with a creamy, sticky lace. Citrusy, dank, and resiny, with alcohol heat on the nose. A bit viscous, chewy, and creamy up front followed by some sugary sweetness, a tropical fruitiness, an underlying vodka-like booziness, peppery notes that permeate the palate, and a dry, biscuity malt base. Raw, leafy, ashy, and a bit oily, the hop character adds some mild astringency to the overall bitterness. A heavy dose of pine also sticks and lingers for quite some time. The booziness is a bit too much, but in general it delivers a damn good, hoppy punch to the palate.

As reviewed in BeerAdvocate magazine #103 (August 2015).

The color is a 24k gold color. This beer has a citrus orangey, bite..smells of pine and citrus, slightly fruity smell..the taste is piney, citrusy hops, with a light-medium body that I like. Lots of carbonation, for high abv, which makes for a more pop and action to the mouth. Vibrant, fruity, bitter, resin apparent. Not too much diacetyle. Much bigger taste than smell.

The Therapist has a citrusy, fruity, very grassy, herbal, minty nose. Pours a very clean, brilliant copper amber under a thick, finely bubbled 2” off-white foam cap that produces thick sheets of lace. A very creamy palate with a big tropical fruit, citrus, herbal, minty bitter bite that finishes with a touch of astringency. Long lingering hop bitterness. This is hop driven but a background of light toffee malt sweetness provides some balance. A big chewy body with a creamy, almost silky mouth feel. A therapeutic beer with an elixir like quality.

"Therapist - no appointment necessary" reads the 22 oz bottle. Finally, a beer label that's actually funny, although certainly not pretty. Purchased at Molly Stone in Palo Alto. Anyway, I don't see how an Imperial IPA could be any better than this. All the reviews so far are fairly spot-on, but I liked it more.

A: perfectly transparent amber color. White head that lasts a while.

S: floral and very hoppy. A little citrus in there too.

T: citrusy and very hoppy. Very good malt taste too.

M: great smooth finish.

O: reminds me of Pliny the elder. A little hoppier and and a little less smooth, but I feel this is a great dipa.
