We have brewed on this beer in a long time and we finally think it is a should. A very majestic stout with a hint of roasted barley malt, smoke malt, coffee, some spices and to top it all a drop a of rum. The beer has been seasoned on oak wood. This beer can stored many years in a dark closet or cellar, but is also ready to drink when it leaves our brewery. Buy an extra bottle and stash it for a special occasion in some years. It will develop like a god wine- only get better and better by the years.

On-tap. ½ pt glass. Enjoyed on mar´13. Pure black headed by creamy & lasting crown, beige in color. Roasted malt & black coffee grain aromas, hints of rum & alcohol, woody hints to the nose. Smooth & creamy malt upfront is shacked by pungent heat & intense coffee infusion. Full body. Moderate to soft carbonation. Dense texture. Dry bitter finish & coffee on the aftertaste. Excessive –despite of its name- rum notes.

April 2012: Rerate, 500 ml bottle, Cardinal Pub & Bar. ABV is 11%. Pitch black colour, large brown head. Aroma and flavour mainly as in first sample, but the carbonation helps. The roasty notes come through more distinctly. I’m upping it a few points.

Original rating: Cask at Copenhagen Beer Festival, gravity dispense. Black colour, no head nor carbonation. Strong aroma of rum and oak / vanilla. The flavour is quite oaky, again with strong notes of rum and vanilla. Quite enjoyable, and would no doubt be better with a little carbonation.

Pours a pitch-black coloration with a medium, creamy, mocha-colored head. Smells of roasted, caramel malt. distinct dark chocolate and lighter coffee, as well as hints of dark fruit, spices and rum-soaked oak. Taste is an excellent balance of quite roasted, slightly caramelly malt, distinct dark and bitter chocolate, lighter coffee, brown sugar and dark fruits, with notes of plum and raisin, as well as some spices and hints of leather, tobacco and earthy, rum-soaked oak. Finishes semi-dry, with a light bitterness and some roasted malt, chocolate, spices and oak lingering in the aftertaste. Smooth mouthfeel with a medium/rich body and medium carbonation.

This makes for a great rum-barrel-aged Stout that completely lacks the strong booziness I've experienced with many other examples of the style and really brings out those spicy rum and earthy oak barrel notes, with a strong chocolate presence as well, bringing to mind spiced-up, rum-soaked Caribbean Chocolate Cake, while never feeling too sweet or boozy. The overall flavor profile really tends towards the roasted, dry and bitter end here, which I love, with just a little sweetness coming through, while hints of smoked and spicy accents provide a bit more depth to this. Overall this makes for a terrific, quite complex and well-balanced beer that is only slightly let down by a body and mouthfeel that could be more full and thick. Goes great with some chocolate-covered German gingerbread!

Bottle share with Brian. In a word, decent spice in finish. The rest, some smoke and coffee, and way too woody character. So-so drinkability. Dry like anything.

500ml bottle - from the fractured English in the label description, I can only infer that they aged this stout with some sort of rum-based oak - how, I have no idea.

This beer pours a solid black abyss, with very scant amber basal edges, and two fingers of puffy, finely foamy, and somewhat bubbly brown head, which leaves a bit of low-lying pinprick lace around the glass as it evenly bleeds away.

It smells of roasted caramel malt, bittersweet chocolate, gently estery smoke, oaky and fruity rum, and maybe a hint of earthy black licorice. The taste is gritty and grainy dark cocoa powder, biscuity caramel malt, some free-range ashiness, a mildly astringent rum-soaked woodiness, faint day-old coffee grounds, muddled earthy spices, and a suggestion of metallic alcohol warming.

The carbonation is adequate in its merely supportive frothiness, the body a decent medium weight, and mostly smooth, the smoke retreating, and the sugary elements gliding right along their merry way across my palate. It finishes off-dry, but trending towards the latter, as the spices belatedly choose to come out and play.

Overall, this is a decent spiced-rum addled version of the style, lots of flavours abounding. Unlike its chili stout sibling, however, the smoke essence here is subtle, rather than medicinal and unpleasant, which is an obvious plus. Worth checking out, especially if you're an old rummy.

Appearance - Pours a very dark, flat black that looks both ominous yet inviting. The head is tan and voluminous, with long-lasting retention.

Aroma - The aroma is unique and complex. It is roasty and oaky, with a great spiced rum smell. There is a smoke note as well which was unexpected but adds even more depth. Milk chocolate rounds out the aroma with a sweeter edge.

Taste - Yep, this is a rum barrel alright! The two dominant flavors are the rum barrel and chocolate. The barrel lends some vanilla, oak and of course that big spiced rum taste, while the chocolate gives a sweet reprieve. The malts add a roasted note while bordering on smoked.

Mouthfeel - The mouthfeel is medium-bodied with somewhat low carbonation. I would've liked a little more heft behind this.

Closing Arguments - Overall, this is a neat beer, especially with the integration of the barrel. I wish the stout were a little more substantial to compete with the barrel, but alas. I've been meaning to try this beer for years, and while it didn't full live up to the pedestal I had it put on, it is still tasty.
