Melograno became an instant celebrity when it took the crown of best beer menu in the city of São Paulo for 2009. Since then, it has been a place that if I were to return to Sampa, I would give it a whirl. I´m very glad I did.

The interior is lovely. Brick walls are set up around, a bar that seats 5 people, brilliant colors used in art throughout the place, a patio in both the front and back, the quiet ambience. You forget you´re in São Paulo.

To be honest, the beer menu didn´t knock my socks off, but nonetheless is interesting. Five beers are pouring from tap, and I´m sure they rotate. In fact, Melograno was the first of its kind in Brazil to serve Czech beer on-tap. For my visit, Guinness, Weihenstephaner, Bamberg Pilsen and Weizen, and Colorado Indica were pouring. In the bottle were a digestable mix of domestics and imports, organized by both style and country of origin. Rogue, Fullers, Falke, Wäls, Young´s, Orval, Achel, Rochefort, Baden Baden, and Paulanar were among the brands sold. Lots of different glassware is used, and quality would rate higher if the beers didn´t come from refrigerators with -2.6 on them.

It wasn´t the beer selection I enjoyed though, it was the service. I ended up staying longer than expected because of them. What was orignally a one-two beer stop and go turned into a 3-hour stop with dinner. One of the waiters was Peruvian, but knew a little English and beer. Another waitress made quite an impression on me when she said she had tried Ballast Point´s Calico Amber. The rest of the crew were very chatty and interested in me and some of my Brazilian experiences.

Much of the food menu is made up of Panini´s, and I recommend getting one. I had one with shredded chicken, cheddar cheese, and carmelized onions which I liked.

In summary, Melograno is cool. It´s also in a rather cool neighborhood, and with Bar Anhanguera nearby, makes for a cool destination.

Melograno was recommended to me by a native Brazilian. As I am here for 3 months studying, I was very happy to find a place with a beer menu like Melograno. Upon arriving there last week, I found that they didn't quite have everything on the menu posted on the web. While their bottle selection was about 75-100 beers, some were gone and some had appeared. Unibroue beers were out, for example. They had everything from the local Skol and Bohemia to Meantime, La Chouffe, Guiness on tap, and Estrella Inedit. The list was good, but the prices were not too attractive. The imports in Brazil are a bit expensive due to taxes, about NYC prices or so. I stuck with trying some from the extensive list of Brazilian beers - specifically from Baden Baden brewery in Campos do Jordao.

There is an outdoor seating area that is nice (when there are no garbage trucks going by or construction going on), as well as an indoor area. The service is typical Brazilian - you need to be proactive as a customer to get attention. The food was reasonable but nothing terribly memorable.

Overall, I am glad that such a place exists in Sao Paulo, but will probably only go to splurge occasionally on something I can't find elsewhere here. The neighborhood, Vila Madalena, is G-R-E-A-T for a night of bar hopping and parties, though, so it is likely that I'll find myself here a few times.
