On draught at the Dog & Pony, Port Royal Stout is black with a small light tan collar leaving light, scattered lace. Very low carbonation.

Smell is a touch rubbery, very light roast. Chocolate really opens up as it warms.

Taste is chocolatey, a nice roastiness, and mild astringency. A bit phenolic as well, not overly so, but a bit out of character for the style. A touch of sweetness as well as some coffee notes. Decent.

Mouthfeel has a nice creamy carbonation, medium body.

Drinkability is pretty good, this is a fairly solid stout. Just a little rough around the edges, like I find most of their brews to be. Decent formula, iffy execution.

Served in straight pint glass. Poured as black as you'd expect, with over an inch of deep tan head that had good retention and lacing.

The aroma was the expected deep roasted and toasted scents, very much malt forward and low on hops. The flavors are the same, roasted flavors dominate.

The body was a bit too thin for my take on the style. Drinkability was good, if you like heavy stouts, you'll drink several, 1 at a time was enough for me.

Overall, a decent beer that's worth a shot if you see it.

Seven Seas describes their stout thus: "roasty, chocolaty, full body, complex, smooth." Looks like they did my work for me, as that pretty well sums it up. It is oil slick black with a light smattering of tan suds and tastes especially chocolaty. An elegant boomerang finish returns after its initial departure. Of Seven Seas' four regular ales, Port Royal is their most inspiring.
