There is definitely a fair amount of smokiness to this beer; it is not overwhelming or immediately perceptible as such, but the caramel and vanilla flavors from the bourbon-barrel aging are somewhat overshadowed by the bitterness from the smoke that makes for a relatively dry finish.

Dark tan head that didn't hang out, deep brown charcoal color. Get the bourbon off the nose and charred Carmel/chocolates on a roasty platter. Very sticky on the lips. Mouhfeel is what I like most about this one. Not even noticing the 10%.

Black pour, just a rim of khaki, brown head. Aroma- chocolate, bourbon, vanilla, cherries. Smells fantastic! Could smell this all day. Taste- bourbon up front. This was aged either a long time or on some wood still soaked in bourbon. Vanilla, bit of chocolate. Again a lingering bourbon, alcohol taste that is pretty nice to have hanging around. Also a bit of dark chocolate. Mouthfeel has maybe a touch too much carbonation. Overall, pretty big fan of sun King, (full disclosure) and love their barrel program. I think I would prefer their doppelbock and wee heavy over this in a barrel. Maybe a side by side is due in the future NYD.

It's a very smooth bourbon stout, clean and a little thick. There's sweet cocoa and vanilla and a little roast. It's a tasty stout but at 10%, it isn't as bold as the best in this style.

16oz twist top aluminum bottle poured into a snifter glass, no bottle date

A- pours a pitch black color with a small fizzy khaki colored head that reduces and disappears completely, leaving nothing behind

S- dark chocolate nut fudge aroma up front with lots of caramel sweetness, followed by some dark fruit. Strong bourbon presence adds some earthy oak, vanilla & barrel juice

T- dark chocolate with lightly smoky malt up front, complemented by notes of coffee, fig, and some earthy notes. The bourbon comes through strong in the mid-palate, giving notes of toasted wood & vanilla. Big wave of creamy sweet caramel pops through on the finish and continues through the linger

M- medium body with moderate-low carbonation leads to a slightly foamy mouthfeel than finishes a bit thin, with some warming alcohol on the linger

O- solid bourbon-forward RIS that is certainly suited for sipping. The only downfall is that the mouthfeel was a bit thin for the strong alcohol and flavors

Black, a bit thinner pouring, more cola like than stouty, nice tan head that sticks around. Aroma of dark chocolate, vanilla, more chocolate, bourbon / vanilla. Not overly boozy. Some brown sugar and hint of molasses in the back. Pleasantly thick but could be either creamier or more viscous. Very solid.

A-Black in the glass, but clear around the edges.

S-Dark chocolate, some coffee, mild bourbon, dark fruits.

T-Chocolate and dark fruits, oak, slight bourbon, mild coffee.

M-Lighter for the style, some carbonation.

O-A good BA stout but there are just so many that are better.

A - Dark black body, with a mild tan head, some lacing.

S - Wood, dark fruit, vanilla, booze.

T - Broad hit of plum skin, smack of wood, oak. Huge chocolate, lots of alcohol. Bitter hints in the close.

M - Booze is warm and present, close is prickly and clean.

O - A very good illustration of how the barrel can elaborate and deepen the flavors of what is already a rich, bold stout. Good show.

Aroma on this is fantastic. From the time I cracked the can a huge chocolate bourbon aroma escaped. The taste, although very solid, is barely thinner than what I would expect from a Gold Medal winning world class stout.

grabbed at the brewery last week and poured cold tonight a deep cola black to a 10oz surly darkness snifter with a thin, quickly dissipating mocha head leaving a thin halo around the rim

big oaky, vanilla aroma with hints of bourbon and sweet dark sugars in the wayback.

medium bodied, medium carbonation, smooth and slick.

big sweet vanilla bourbon forward. dark chocolate, black molasses, subtle smoke and a little bit of heat.

very nice. thumbs up.
