16oz can, from a mixed-sixer at the Glendale, Colorado Liquor Mart.

This beer pours a clear, dark red brick amber hue, with four ebullient fingers of puffy, densely foamy, and mildly bubbly beige head, which leaves some sparse spatterings of sudsy lace around the glass as it quickly dissolves.

It smells of bready caramel malt, dark, slightly soused orchard fruit, a bit of mocha, leafy, earthy hops, and a touch of metallic warming alcohol. The taste is more doughy caramel malt, a hint of smoked toffee, bruised apples and pears, thin brown sugar, a tame acrid milkiness, and earthy, weedy hops.

The carbonation is quite active in its toothless frothiness, the body on the lee side of medium weight, and generally smooth, but with a growing clammy caveat. It finishes off-dry, the caramel malt dragging along that cheap lager metallic essence, to no one's benefit.

A plain as the rain in Spain (I know) Scottish ale, something to drink with a healthy dose of cognitive dissonance. Not particularly engaging, or full, or, well, interesting. And then there's that stoney, metallic thing. Aach, forget it.

This beer just does not hit my palate right. This one of the few beers I've had that seems to have no flavor. I gave it a 3 because I figured it was just me...

A - very dark amber/brown in color. Clear. Moderate carbonation. White 1 finger head that dissipates quickly but leaves a thin layer on top that is retained. 4/5

S - Toasted bread. Smells a bit heavy and bitter. Chocolate. Bit of espresso. Grassy. Grainy. Hint of dates. Nutty. 3.75/5

T - Toasted bread. Nutty. Yeasty. Grassy/earthy hops that lend a hefty bitterness to this beer. Leathery. 3.5/5

M - Medium body. Finishes somewhat dry. Moderate carbonation. Smooth but dry. Slight lingering bitterness. 3.5/5

O - Complex aroma but simple and straightforward flavor. Nice for dinner or a cool day. 3.75/5
