64oz growler filled at the Brewery. Served in a Pint Glass.
A: Pours a pleasant looking translucent golden orange. A half a finger of crackling, volatile white foam appears and then quickly vanishes. Lots of active carbonation in the glass. Lacing is pretty weak.
S: Belgian yeast, with some accompanying fruity sweetness and light spice.
T: Not as aggressively spiced as most wits, yet there's still some coriander and friends present. Bready malts mix with the fruitiness of the Belgian yeast, creating a good amount of sweetness. The crap apple comes in mostly on the finish, adding a small amount of tartness.
M: Light-Medium bodied. Comes across fairly thick and sticky, but the ample carbonation helps counterbalance it. I quite enjoyed this aspect of the beer. You can definitely tell that there was a juice element.
D: At a little over 5% and only 13 IBU's, this beer is made to be consumed easily and often. However, after awhile the slight tartness coupled with the sweet fruitiness would get pretty cloying.
An interesting take on the Witbeir by the boys at SK. It's also the first beer I've had that utilizes crab apples, a fruit I grew up with in my front yard. I'd like to see double/triple the amount of crab apple juice used and make this beer REALLY tart. Now that would be something.
