Pulled from the crypt, Sun King pulls Fistful of Hops emerges from retirement for a deeply malty taste that after all this time still cowers to hops.

Rich amber upon the pour, the beer shows impressive ecru persistence and lace. Grapefruit and orange blaze the trail while the scent of toasty, nutty malt attempt to round the hops. To taste, its the malts that win the early palate with their toffee, bready, toasty, crusty sweetness.

The middle brings a shift. The caramel malts and starchy substrate begins to lift and the hops take hold with their stern citrus of grapefruit and orange along with a finish of deeply resinous bittering power of pine and grass.

Medium-bodied for IPA, the beer's toasted taste persists in an amber ale-like fashion even though the hops take firm command. Trailing bitterness is laced with a long linger of stem, grass and leaf as those resins grip the throat and are slow to relax.

Has a good hop balance. I like the amount of bitterness in this beer. It's dialed in just right. I'm working on the winter batch in the blue pint cans right now. Not sure why it's listed as retired. I have always found it in the rotation...however, I ALWAYS get it at one of their two local tap rooms. I'm OCD about getting all of my local (and only local) favs straight from the source. It's one of my go-to choices.

From a can into a pint glass. The site has this listed as retired but I just bought it this week.

Beer is amber/orange in color with 1 finger of thick foam that fades quickly

Smell is pine hops and grapefruit. Lots of bready yeasty malts give it a well rounded aroma.

Taste follows smell well wit great citrus and hops. Perfect balance.
Also getting some sweet notes. Maybe carmel

Overall this might be my favorite beer from Sun King!

Nice IPA, has a moderate hop presence with a good creamy finish. Hop bitterness fades quickly, leaving this almost medium sweet. Would have again, but wouldn't seek it out.

16 ounce can thanks to Trent!

It pours a hazy golden orange and it sits under a 1 finger head of foam.

I get strong notes of citrus and malt. Pint grapefruit with some bready and caramel malt.

In the tasting, lots of grapefruit citrus with an earth malt base which spreads out to caramel and bread. I also get hints of pineapple and overall, the bitterness and sweetness in this brew are well within my comfort zone.

Medium bodied with medium carbonation, great mouthfeel.

This is a truly delicious IPA. Hitting on all cylinders from first sip to last swallow!

A - pours a caraeml coler with 2 fingers of fluffy caramel head (not superbly dense). Great retention and decent lacing.

S - minimal resinous hop bitterness. Malty And apple like aroma dominate

T - light dry resinous hops, welcoming rinds, caramel sweetness.

M - lightish bodied well carbonated, drinks pretty nicely

Winter 13-14 release, blue can, poured into a pint glass:

A - Golden brown in color, with no head, none, but a slight fizz on top that did stick to the glass as I drank.

S - Smells like a hoppy beer, nothing special here

T - A moderate hoppy taste, with hints of grapefruit and tartness. Not too bitter, and mellow on the hops, which I prefer. But, not a punch you in the mouth hoppy taste, which stereotypical beer drinkers dislike. But, I'm not a stereotypical beer drinker, so I actually enjoyed this moderately hoppy IPA.

M - Medium to full bodied

O - A wonderful IPA for beer drinkers who don't like your stereotypical punch you in the mouth bitter IPAs. A pleasant surprise, and worth a try for anyone looking to pay $13 for 4 pint cans.

From Indiana originally, so Sun King is a brewery I know fairly well and hear about often. I was excited to try this one.

A: Copper. Amber. Clear. Finger and a half of head dissipates into a sticky half finger head. GREAT lacing throughout.

S: Not a lot there. Possibly some Fuggle finish but cannot quite tell. Hops are too faint to get a real read on. Floral. Slight citrus.

T: If this was a contest on mellowing hops and blending flavors, this one is excellent. For an American IPA style, I am not wholly crushed by the taste. It starts off with the bitter hops... I think this is quite the mix of hops (a few varieties) all mixed together. Finish is sweet turning to bitter. Malt is present, but faint and only available on a moments glance.

M: Medium bodied. Carbonation has been done well.

O: Surprised this wasn't a "hop Bomb." Why? It is very tasty, just not what I expected at all.

A: clean crisp copper color

S: there's hardly a noticeable aroma the head fades quickly taking any and all aroma with it.

T: Nice pleasant IPA may not be as hoppy as some were expecting but it's not an Imperial, malt blend is a nice balance with the hops a fuggle (hop) like presence shows up with an exhale, lingering bitterness.

M: not very oily fairly thin and water like

O: I would never reject this if it was placed in front of me but I don't know that I'd go out of my way to find it either. It's so similar to other IPA's but lacks the clean finish of others I'd probably opt for another strain of IPA.

I drank a Bells Two Hearted which is an averaged hopped IPA before consuming this. I would have figured with the name "Fistful Of Hops" this would be a massive IPA with a massive hop presence? However that assumption was vastly incorrect. I took a good sniff of it prior to drinking and didn’t really get a whole lot and I was looking to pick up on some hops in the beer. The mouth feel is not much there is no major hop bitterness or flavor from what I could tell. This made the Two Hearted I had just consumed seem like a 100+ IBU beer in comparison. There was a slight head on the beer and the huge was much darker than a typical IPA. The huge through me off as I would of expected more of a malty and spice presence but those where not there either. Overall this was a gigantic let down and wasn’t very enjoyable to drink.

Got a growler of this for the holiday weekend. Shared with some friends throughout the night.

A- Pours clear almost copper in color. White head fades away very quickly to just some appearance around the edge.

S- Nice almost completely hop aroma. Grapefruit and Citrus mostly. Hint of malts at the end.

T- Like the name and the nose, lots of hop flavor here. Right up front you get the bitterness with grapefruit flavor. Some citrus mixed in at the end with a little malt backbone. Seemed a little sweet at the end.

M- On the lighter side of medium body.

O- Very solid IPA, nothing spectacular, but good. Finished off the growler very easily and quickly. I like hops, so wouldn't mind having another growler of it.

poured cold from a growler grabbed a couple hours ago at the brewery a crisp, translucent light copper to a sun king shaped pint glass with a big bubbled, short lasting, white head that leaves a fair amount of quickly receding spotty lace after each sip.

great big citrus-y and grapefruit aroma.

as advertised, it's about the hops, and alot of them. big bitter grapefruit hops up front, followed by more hops. as it warms a bit, there's a hint of a caramel malt, but really, it's a hint at most and then its back to the hops.

bitter to the back of the tongue, light bodied, medium carbonation.

drinkable - sure, i'll finish the 32oz growler.

overall - absolutely hit the mark. big hops.

A: Appearance is amber color with thin, beige head.

S: Aroma is citrus including grapefruit, pineapple and lemon.

T: Taste is almost completely dominated by the hops with a medium strong bitterness and notes of citrus. There’s only a slight hint of malty sweetness.

M: Palate is medium bodied, good carbonation, and bitter finish.

O: Just an average IPA, nothing remarkable.
