Fremont - Brew 3000

Thank you so very much to Brandon for this long-time want!

650ml bottle - purple wax - poured into a snifter at 50°F.

Pours a deep, dark rosewood brown, sitting just a few shades lighter than black, and surrounded by a few sticky brown bubbles that dissipate very quickly, leaving absolutely nothing behind. With a swirl, the ale clings to the glass, leaving legs behind.

Nose: Dense and saturated, B3k explodes out of the glass with imposing aromas of dark toffee, brown sugar, Cavendish pipe tobacco, vanilla bean, burned caramel, toasted muscovado sugar, molasses cookie dough, and maple syrup. There's some dark, fruit elements - primarily Turkish fig, dates, and a kiss of plum,  as well as a unique floral note. Not hops, but sweet summer blossoms. Tons and tons of bourbon-soaked oak. Beautiful.

Palate: B3k greets the palate sweet and malty - quite sweet, almost dessert proportions, with a suggestion of pure maple syrup. Notes of gomemade soft caramel, butter toffee, butterscotch, creme brulée, caramel flambe, vanilla cream, brown sugar, toasted pound cake, and Irish cream all weave together to form a truly dessert-like flavour profile. Just a faint touch of toast - like bread crust, and then the barrel begins to cut through enough to lend a touch of dryness, but not nearly enough to reduce the imposing sweetness. Oaky and woody, with some splintery barrel, barrel char, and secondary vanillin and caramel notes, with a touch of fruity fig, and then bourbon, finishing sweet, with maple syrup and sweet grains.

Mouthfeel/Body: Absolutely full-bodied. Rich, chewy, thick, sticky, and slick, with a bit of viscosity. About as thick as you'd want a barleywine, while possessing just enough fluidity to keep it from drinking completely syrupy. Effervescence is quite low, but there's plenty of bubbles - just very fine and mellow. Sticky lips, and tongue-numbing booze.

Overall: This is a rather tricky one. Taking everything about it into consideration, it is an absolutely world-class barrel-aged barleywine. You can immediately tell that it's a quality ale. Thr maple quality without any maple syrup? Amazing. My one and only real gripe is the sweetness, which I find to be a bit much, hindering the drinkability, as it doesn't really dry out. If you like dessert beers, you may feel it's perfect. Underneath that sweetness, this is still a spectacular beer.

22oz bottle $24.99. First sniff off the bottle was oxidation. Dark brown appearance. Aroma is brown sugar and bourbon then heavy ethanol. The flavor is super sweet, extra brown sugar on top of bourbon barrel and molasses. I swear I tasted pancake syrup. It’s good but too sweet compared to Brew 2000. Might need a year in the bottle.

Poured from a 22oz bottle into a Fremont can glass. Acquired in a trade.

Pours an opaque brown body with a fizzy two finger light brown head that reduces to a ring of retention, leaving little lacing.

Aromas are sweet and not overly potent, with caramel, toffee and a touch of boozy bourbon coming in. Pretty subtle yet inviting aromas.

On the tongue this is straight candy - toffee brittle and sweet milky caramel, syrupy vanilla-malt, honey bourbon barrels, light oak, follow through is simple syrup sweetness with a lightly toasty finish. The body is rich but slightly thin, low carbonation.

A solid barleywine but I’m afraid this might have broken my sweetness barrier, which is pretty high. A dessert barleywine for sure, best for splitting and/or sipping.

poured from a 22oz bomber into an oversized snifter. pours a shiny dark brown with maroon edges. not much head to speak of. a mocha swirl here and there. smells of whiskey-soaked caramel-covered raisins. perhaps some other darker fruits. taste is similar. lovely whiskey and dark fruit notes. caramel, toffee and dark fruit sweetness a bit of chocolate. feel is full bodied, lower carb. overall, an amazing english-style barleywine. thick, plenty of of barrel character and beyond complex taste. fremont continues to impress the hell out of me.

I missed Brew 2000 so was really hoping my expectations were not overly high. A beautiful auburn brown hue with nearly zero head and the nose is fainter a smell than I’d hope for, even as it warmed. In the end though the proof was in the tasting and it blew me away. This is why I used to love Barleywines so! It took me back with that sweet sticky syrup and heavy figgy notes, but the balance was expertly obtained by the perfect level of carbonation to cut through and allow the incredible flavors to dance on the tongue!

On tap at The Beermongers.

Very dark brown with a thin brown head with good retention and lacing. The nose is excellent. The nose is rich and decadent. Toffee, caramel, bourbon, vanilla, dark honey, a little butterscotch, grain, mildly bready sweetness, dark fruit with raisins and plums, there's a ton going on. Mildly vinous, even. The palate opens sweet with toffee, caramel, a little butterscotch, sherry, buckwheat honey. Noticeably sweet but appropriately so, with a big, creamy palate to carry the flavors. Bourbon, vanilla and brown sugar on the mid palate and linger on into the finish. Fantastic mouthfeel. Excellent.

pretty epic barleywine here, about as big as they get. deep and rich in color and saturation, brownish reddish and just dense as they come, short little head from the tap, and a super strong aroma driven by hot alcohol. plenty of molasses, maple, dried fruit, toffee, and honey there too, slight soy sauce, red apple, and anise sort of spice, even a rum booziness with the cane sugar in it, even though its nice bourbon barrels this is aged in. i do get a lot of the whiskey, intense in the flavor too, with a good amount of vanilla and barrel char there, nice with the heavy malt sweetness, bran muffins, baked crusty dark bread, bread pudding, caramel, molasses again, its sticky and sweet as can be, but the barrel is robust, lots of oak mellowing this, and even though the alcohol is persistent, but i like that in the style, and it serves to cut some of the sugar. heavy throughout, more of the soy coming out at temperature, vanilla sugar, raisin. cool beer, nothing left to wish for in terms of quality, its just personal preference at this point, but i would put this up there with the best beers in the style. id like to try it again with a couple of years of age on it. fremont always nails it with these types of beers, as good as they get really.
