Notes / Commercial Description:
Formerly Abominable Ale

This is a tasty Winter Ale to snuggle up to, released for the winter months when snow blankets the terrain of the mind and the body craves warmth and, let’s be honest, it’s dark and wet most of the time so your beer better be damn good. Winter Ale is dark like the weather with roast chocolate and warm malt flavors balanced by Noble hop aroma and subtle hoppy spice. Warm up to it. Because Beer Matters!

Bottle as a Christmas gift from a friend. Thanks! Pours nearly pitch black with a massing khaki brown head that sticks around a good while. Aroma of straight up malt extract--in a completely good way--some light hops, molasses, more sweet malts. Whoah. Flavor is sweet up front with big malt body to the Nth degree, some lightly earthy hops that balance things tremendously, finishing with some light roast and smoke, and long molasses notes. Big body, medium low carbonation. Right on. This is one of the better non-BAs in this style that I've had. Really delicious and relaxing. Have to try the bourbon version now.

Deep reddish mahogany color with an attractive cap of foam and lots of lacing in the wine tumbler. A light body. Warm and rich malty flavor. Tastes like there is some spice in the mix, but the ingredients list insists on just barley and four hop varieties. In any case, it's an intriguing smooth flavor more enjoyable than the common winter clove bomb.

IBUs are rated at 47, but this brew is just pleasantly spicy with a modestly bitter aftertaste. Some sweetness lingers and kisses the lips with every sip. So much dark roasted flavor. Flavor of Mexican cocoa, and I would swear there is a touch of cinnamon.

One of my favorite winter brews this year for sure. From the 22 oz bottle purchased at Wine World and Spirits in north Seattle.

I am not quite sure what "winter warmer" is supposed to taste like since beers labeled as winter warmers all tasted very different to me, but this one certainly tastes like a chocolate stout with a bit of a hop bite towards the end. ANYWAY

A: Black with 2 finger head. Lots of lacing.

S: Smells like an oatmeal stout. roasty, coffee, chocolate, malt.

T: Tastes definitely like a stout. It's not one of those hoppy stouts. Roasty malt, chocolate notes, brown sugar, and in the middle, there is some strong sweetness accompanied by hops. Slightly bitter finish, but again, not a hoppy stout (like Victory storm king).

M: Smooth. Like an oatmeal stout. Not much alcohol heat detected.

O: It's quite good. Its big brother Bourbon Abominable is in a different class on its own, but I can see why this beer would make a great base beer for bourbon aging.

12 ounce can poured into a DFH signature glass. Winter beer in August

A: dark cola looking with a creamy head

S: Carmel, chocolate, faint booze, toffee

T: starts with the toffee and Carmel, finishes with s lot of bitter chocolate, some hop bitterness in there too

M: extremely creamy! Not too the point of chewy, but it's like a glass of whole milk with Hershey syrup

The bitter chocolate makes this beer so good! It has a good complexity and its a unique experience

I bought a bomber of Abominable Ale at Total Wine and More. Poured in to a pint glass.

Pours a black walnut color, opaque with a frothy tan head.

Smell is a dark roasted coffee and chocolate aroma.

Mouthfeel is full-bodied and cloying.

Overall - A very drinkable ale. I make it as much a traditional coffee stout as a winter ale, but very good indeed.

Review from notes. Had this on nitro at Fremont.

A: Served in a goblet, Abomb was dark brown, practically black with an amazing tan head. Great retention, lasting an extremely long time with sheets of lacing forming down the sides.

S: A good bit of coffee and roast upfront with some faint dark fruit and a bit of spice on the finish.

T: A bit hoppier on the flavor profile, some light pine and a little citrus mixed with chocolate, cocoa, a little caramel, and faint dark fruit.

M: Medium to full bodied, very smooth from the nitro.

O: A really solid winter warmer, great flavor profile and surprisingly drinkable for 8% and the bold flavors it imparts. Nitro did it wonders, but have also had it on tap no on nitro and like it just as much.

Pours a very heave amber holding up a soft brown head and leaving nice ringed lace. Smell of dark rich roasted malt, coffee, dried plums. Taste is rich with the roasted malt, coffee and dark fruits having a nice balance with the mild hops. Mouthfeel is full with mild carbonation making it go down smooth. A tasty rich dark winter ale with subtle alchohol on the senses that goes down well on a cold night.

Pours like a porter with deep dark chocolate color and it's creamy deep beige head, some deep ruby is shown thru when held to the light.Roasted and warming in the nose along with fruity esters and chocolate notes, again alot like a porter.Big roastiness on the palate along with earthy tones, bitter chocolate along with mild fruitiness and sweet alcohol in the finish,I don't get any spice really. To me this is a bigger porter all the way,and a good one.A nice change of pace from the sweet spiced winter warmers.

Thanks to blutt59 for sharing this beer and for 5000 for sending me another bottle of it.

The beer pours a dark brown color with red highlights and a tan head. The aroma is full of roasted malt and chocolate with some nice cream notes mixed in as well. The flavor is similar. The beer is very chocolatey tasting and there is also a nice amount of roasted malt. There is also a little bit of mint in the flavor, which goes well with the other flavors. Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation.

22oz bottle dated 121311 poured to tulip.

A: A very dark cola with a finger of cocoa-colored head, which dissipates quickly leaving—temporarily—large, sparse, soapy bubbles. Red tinged edges when tilted.

S: Roasty. Chocolate. Sweet dark fruits: prunes, raisins. Really nice, particularly as it warmed up.

T: More hop presence here, particularly at the front and end of the taste. Woody, slightly fruity, the hops follow the fruit and chocolate roast.

M: Full-bodied, mild carbonation. Really smooth. Silky.

Really liked this, and it got better throughout the time I spent with it.
