Notes / Commercial Description:
Formerly Abominable Ale

This is a tasty Winter Ale to snuggle up to, released for the winter months when snow blankets the terrain of the mind and the body craves warmth and, let’s be honest, it’s dark and wet most of the time so your beer better be damn good. Winter Ale is dark like the weather with roast chocolate and warm malt flavors balanced by Noble hop aroma and subtle hoppy spice. Warm up to it. Because Beer Matters!

Dark appearance with white head that dissipates slowly. Very little chocolate aroma. Taste is a malt and slight chocolate that is a little thin for my liking.

Can from Boise Co-op. Dark pour, near black, small ring of brown head. Aroma is roast grains and chocolate. Taste is very rich, smooth bitterness. Chocolate, latte, burnt toast. Just shy of a porter. Really tasty.

Pours a surprising dark chocolate brown. Tall, fluffy head of 3 fingers, creamy yellow in appearance.

Aroma is clean water, horehound, bright fruity notes, cherry, slight cilantro.

Flavor starts with bright citrus, and fades to darker notes - black tea, cherry, molasses, root beer barrel, coffee, and hints of chocolate. This is slightly overshadowed by a constant hop bitterness and pine throughout the profile.

Profile is creamy and dry, with a heavy resin throughout.

Overall, if I had drank this a couple years ago, I would've hated it because of the hop bitterness. But I have gradually come to understand and respect the west coast's abundant usage of hops, and that's just the culture. A relatively tasty, maybe slightly over bitter, good representation of a western US winter ale.

Appearance – half finger head on a clear dark brown body.

Aroma – dark malt, chocolate, a little warm spice almost like cinnamon

Taste – dark malt, dark bread, chocolate, a little warm spice that reminds me of nutmeg, but a bit metallic

Mouthfeel – not bad, smooth but that metallic twang at the end detracts

Overall – not a bad winter warmer even if it is a bit off.

This one pours a fairly dark brown- just a few shades under black, with a small head, and lots of lacing.

This smells like chocolate, toasted bread, hop spice, pumpernickel, molasses cookie, smoke, and earthy hops.

This is well put together. It's nowhere near B-Bomb, as the beer is nearly perfect for me, but this is still a great base beer. It feels like a cross between a brown ale and a porter, as there's lots of bittersweet chocolate malt flavor, but there's also a healthy helping of toasted and bready malt, with some light spiciness. There's some dark breadiness that reminds me of pumpernickel bread, along with some very light moderate molasses sweetness. I got a bit of char and smoke on the nose, but I don't get that in the taste.

This is medium bodied, but could be a little thicker and creaminess for my tastes. It's very drinkable, however.

It's clear that beefing up the malt bill and letting this rest in bourbon barrels results in a superior and awesome beer in Bourbon Abominable. However, this beer should not be disregarded.
