Notes / Commercial Description:
Formerly Abominable Ale

This is a tasty Winter Ale to snuggle up to, released for the winter months when snow blankets the terrain of the mind and the body craves warmth and, let’s be honest, it’s dark and wet most of the time so your beer better be damn good. Winter Ale is dark like the weather with roast chocolate and warm malt flavors balanced by Noble hop aroma and subtle hoppy spice. Warm up to it. Because Beer Matters!

12oz can dated December 6, 2016, and part of Batch # 114, per the stamp on the bottom of the can. This lingered in my fridge due in part to my laying off of alcohol for a few weeks this winter because of illness.

Poured into a Mad Bomber IPAish glass (not sure why), this was a very dark brown color, virtually black, at least until held up to light. Then things took on a more ruby tint. Good sized tan head that took it's time dropping and left spotty lace on the sides of the glass.

A malty aroma to this. I got toffee, a little chocolate, and even some cherry-like fruitiness. I did not get hops. Don't know if that's because they faded over the nearly 4 months between canning and consumption or there wasn't much hoppiness to begin with.

The taste is similar to the aroma. The cherry flavor stands out a little more and the toffee pulls in its horns a little, but it's still pretty close. The finish manages to be sweet and yet there's a slight mineral tang happening as well. An aftertaste reminds me equally of cherries and Dr. Pepper.

Medium bodied, with a somewhat creamy mouthfeel.

Not bad, but not an essential winter warmer, either. I'd drink it again for the right price, but it's not something I'd chase down.

12 oz can. Pours brown with a big frothy creamy tan head that retains well and laces the glass a little.

The aroma is sweet roasted chocolate and caramel malt with a little fruit.

The flavor is sweet chocolate and caramel malt with some dark fruit and molasses and a bitter chalky roast finish. The mouthfeel is medium to full bodied with smooth carbonation.

Overall, a decent winter warmer.

Pretty decent winter ale with a good ABV. I like the appearance and it poured with a nice thick frothy head. Get some malt, toffee and caramel in the smell. Taste is very good. Tasting caramel, vanilla, little toffee, old ale and malt in the back. I would get this one again. I give it 4 all around.

Pours dark chocolate with a foamy head that leaves a solid, honeycomb lacing on the glass. This looks amazing. The aroma is not that intense, but very pleasant...simple malts, molasses and dark fruity alcohol. Flavor is overwhelmingly burnt roasted malt. Sort of unpleasant actually. I didn't see that one coming. It lightens up a bit as you sip, but that first blast is a shock to the system. Still, it remains somewhat harsh and bitter with lots of smoke, no matter how slow you go at it. Mouth feel is surprisingly thin and dry, again completely not what I expected.

Black and small red highlights with thin brown head with mediocre retention. Light chocolate, roasted and herbal aroma. Charcoal and chocolate balanced with light herbal and spice. Very dry finish with moderate but smooth feel and carbonation.

Good subtle flavor up front but drowned completely by roasted malt and dryness. Taking long breaks allows you to enjoy that flavor once again but still it ends in an overly dry feel.
