Aggressively black with a minimal milky tan blanket.

Smell is peppery bourbon, like Maker's--I like Maker's but the nose is just too hot for me--with some roasted nuts.

Taste is cola, bourbon, caramel, chocolate and pecans.

Sweet, smooth, frothy, but hot!

I can see this is very nicely done, but it's not hitting notes I prefer.

Black, not much head.

Bourbon, roasted malt.

Spicy, bourbon-y, vanilla-y, sugar-y, fig-y. Also, powdered chocolate and just sweet enough.

Feels like a blend of a stout and a barley wine.

2015 bottle, opened on 2017-03-07.

It pours with a look of medium density. In the glass, it is an opaque dark brown. There are some big bubbles on the surface and a bit of lacing, with a thin layer of suds. It looks only lightly carbonated.

The smell is a powerful combination of fudge, molasses, and figs.

The flavor is a bit less sweet and more complex. There is still fudge, molasses, and figs, but with more of a caramel and oak flavor, and the hops are more assertive, giving it a bitterness that starts about halfway through. It also gives the flavor something of an earthy quality.

The beer has a medium body with a slick feeling that reveals the sugar and the alcohol. There is, however, not one hint of bite or burn despite the relatively high 14% ABV.

Overall, this is a nice sipper of a sweet and strong beer for an evening.

2014 vintage. Ruby-tinted dark brown with a half finger of khaki-colored head that's quick to dissipate but leaves a permanent wisp across the top.

Bourbon with vanilla notes; caramel and chocolate malts; and a definite mulled red wine character, with muted cinnamon and nutmeg, mix together in the nose.

Amazing taste, with smooth chocolatey goodness that's improved by slightly-nutty caramel and vanilla notes. The wintery spices and vinous qualities from the aroma are still present, but hide in the back at this age. The bourbon is definitely still there, though, adding a sweetness and a pretty strong alcohol burn.

Relatively light bodied, but still with a creamy and smooth mouthfeel.

This is an outstanding beer.

2014 vintage, 11% ABV. Poured from a 22oz bomber into a Fremont glass.

Pours a deep brown, nearly black body with a beautiful, three finger, frothy brown head that rises and reduces slowly to leave spotty lacing and ring of retention. Nearly perfect, I'd definitely call this a stout judging by the appearance..

Aromas are potent and heavy with lots of bourbon, vanilla, and chocolate - woody and sweet with a bit of sweetness on the nose.

On the tongue, this is a roller coaster! Up front, it's sweet with caramel and sweet vanilla, morphing into bourbon and toffee, dark fruits, finishing super roasty, toasted malt, coffee, with char sitting on the tongue for quite some time after sipping. I have to give this a 4.75 in this category because of how complex this is - over the course of 20 seconds it's a three different beers I feel. Mouthfeel is silky and velvety, thick and rich, low carbonation.

This was much better than expected, and I expected a great beer. I haven't had this fresh, but the 2014 batch is drinking fantastic. The only thing I'd comment on is that this is definitely a stout, not a strong ale.

This one pours a very dark brown, almost black, with a small white head, and basically no lacing.

Smells like charred and spicy oak, sweet and earthy bourbon, chocolate, toffee, and vanilla.

This is just stupid delicious. It's got a killer spiciness on the finish from the oak. The bourbon is mildly boozy, a bit spicy but also sweet, with lots of barrel vanillin, some light coconut, chocolate and lots of toffee. This is so well blended and all the flavors integrated so well- it's crazy there are no flavorings added as there's much flavor here.

This is medium bodied, creamy but also crisp, with a good level of carbonation.

Fremont makes some absolutely bangin' barrel aged beers. This is highly recommended.

Near black pour, thumb sized puffy off-white head, rings of lacing. Dark fruit, bourbon, light chocolate notes in the aroma. Aroma is dark chocolate and roasted malt, strong bourbon notes, vanilla, dark fruit, toffee. Thicker body but incredibly smooth. 2014 Vintage

This pours deep chocolate brown, thick and creamy. The head forms almost in slow motion, going from non-existent to one knuckle deep as the bubbles work their way up slowly through the glass. Just gorgeous. Aroma is mostly molasses, raisins, vanilla, and bourbon. It smells like it's going to kick, but it goes down smooth as silk. Taste is incredibly complex. Bourbon and licorice up front, followed by raisins and a good whisky burn that's tempered nicely by a creamy caramel finish. It goes down as thick as it pours, very syrupy, but not unpleasant. It doesn't feel overbearing, even though the dominant flavors are all sweet. Who needs hot chocolate after shoveling the driveway on a cold winter day when you have this?

2016

Deep brown and clear. No initial head but a bit of a minor ring forms. Very minor lacing on a sip.

Nose is Bourbon and molasses, sweet dark fruit, vanilla, and a bit of oak.

Taste follows the nose with molasses, bourbon throughout, raisins, minor oak, vanilla, malt, and minor leather/tobacco.

Mouthful is heavy, smooth, and a bit creamy. Carbonation is low. Finish is semi sweet.

A great bourbon barrel stout. Boozy, sweet, heavy...a sipper. A bit hot still and alot of bourbon. Very much drinkable, very much shareable and very much enjoyable.

Look: Minimal head, dark reddish brown.

Smell: Sweet like a barley wine but the bourbon shows up quickly. Some spices in the background.

Taste: Bourbon, spice, slightly sweet. Good balance though

Feel: Alcohol warmth in the throat and chest.

Overall: First sample of Fremont but a very high quality beer. Look forward to others like KDS and variants. I have the Bourbon Barrel Aged Dark Star Oatmeal Stout coming and looking forward to that one as well.

Bottle, 2016 release:
Dark brown allows a small amount of light through at the edges. Khaki head ends fairly quickly in athinrim with wisps on the surface.

Nose is molasses, vanilla, and very light bourbon dark fruits.

Taste is similar but thankfully not as sweet as the nose might indicate. There's a little boozy burn with a bit of licorice mid to mid-late taste, but it's easily within enjoyable parameters. Fairly thick feel, but not not overly heavy despite the bold flavors.

A really enjoyable brew that is a fulfilling supper and one that is nice to share with friends.

2015 vintage; drank 3/25/16.

Poured from the bottle into a glass.

Opaque dark brown appearance.

A violent pour yielded a huge tan head; nice lacing.

Dark caramel, oak, raspberry & mild bourbon heat notes in the nose.

Thick, sticky mouthfeel.

Tangy raspberry, rich caramel & oak flavors up front; STRONG bourbon heat notes on the finish. Plum notes emerged as this warmed. This is currently too boozy for me, but a decadent treat lurks beneath. I think more time would benefit this monster...

2015 vintage it pours a thick dark mahogany color with some brown highlights and a beautiful mocha head and lacing. Aromas of dark fruit wood and bourbon . This starts as a Barleywine to me with rich dark fruits chocolate and bourbon it finishes with spice and sweet caramel and roasted malts more like a winter warmer or wee heavy. Mouth feel is mature oak and bourbon crafted beautifully with the base beer. A top tier brew.

2916 Edition from a 22oz bottle. At 14% this is a BIG beer. I have read the reviews and eagerly anticipated drinking it. I LOVE BBA beers and Fremont brews some of the best on the West Coast. The bourbon in this is strong, almost overpowers the senses. By the 3rd or 4th sip it smooths out to a very silky finish. This is not the best BBA I've tried. I would rank Fremont's Dark Star series ahead of this and maybe even Goose Island's Bourbon County ahead of this but this is in the top 5 for sure. Cheers!

2012 version, still hot and boozy and delicious. Smells like money, bourbon, barrel, dark fruit, heat and deliciousness. Drinks relatively easy but still heats you with alcohol and massiveness. Fremont impresses me; their beers are rare and expensive and hard to get but they are worth the hunt.

Appearance – The beer was a murky brownish-black color.

Smell – Bourbon dominates the nose.

Taste – The bourbon really jumps out at you in the initial taste. I feel like this is a stout until I get the winter warmer notes toward the back. There is cinnamon, Christmas tree, and a hint of cookie. The taste lingers nicely.

Mouthfeel – There is enough body to allow this to linger. That is a good thing. There is also a pleasant warming sensation.

Overall – I think the bourbon smothers the bourbon notes a little too much. As whole, I still think this is excellent.

2013 Vintage
22oz bottle poured into a snifter

A- pours deep brown in color with a one-finger creamy khaki colored head that reduces to a rind around the edge

S- opens up with a huge blast of caramel/toffee, tobacco, leather, fig & molasses. Plenty of bourbon barrel character adds aromas of spicy wood & vanilla. Closes with hints of chocolate

T- opens up with sweet malty caramel and toffee, along with fig & raisin. Earthy tones of tobacco follow, along with barrel notes of bourbon, wet oak & vanilla. The finish gives more caramel sweetness with a linger of bourbon and dark fruit

M- medium body with low carbonation leads to a creamy mouthfeel that turns into a velvety finish, just a bit of alcohol warmth on the linger

O- three years in the bottle has meshed the elements brilliantly and alcohol is pretty mellow, considering the abv. Thisis just delicious

Really dark brown, almost black with a bit of mocha head. Aroma is huge. Lots of bourbon, dark fruits, dried figs, brown sugar, really complex. Taste is also really intense. Sweet and warning at first with bourbon, chocolate, dark fruits and finishes with butterscotch, creme brulee and earthy bitterness. Medium body with smooth mouthfeel and a hint of booze. Really complex beer, strong and intense.

Got on trade. 22oz bomber served at cellar temperature in a challis. 2015 vintage

A- Open well and pours an airy looking brown head that is gone within 2mins or less. Very dark brown colour

S- Lots of spices and bourbon. The heat takes this one down from a 5.

T- Nice blend of spice and malt with bourbon all over it. Has a lot of complexity to it. Bitters out a bit at the end. Plenty of bourbon barrel flavor here as well.

M- Creamy going down and dries out as expected

O- Nice brew. Has a blend of spices that is warming. Will try again if I see it

Food Pairing

This bourbon barrel aged brew with a ton of spices is very difficult to pair. Feel this one would go well with...... Chocolate chip chocolate cookies and this brew still blasts all flavor away.

Enjoy

2015 vintage drank on 6/16/2016

Look - dark dark brown, not quite black with a very thin tan head. Looks thick and boozy.

Smell - bourbon! leather, figs, oak, chocolate

Taste - bourbon is strong with some chocolate, oak, a sweet fruit like plum or something similar, tobacco, almost a little smoke to it, maybe some charred oak

Feel - creamy, a little boozy but nothing to what i expected. really enjoyable and smooth

Overall - drank this split between 5 people, so i would love to have a larger glass but this was a really nice offering. it exceeded expectations although after dark star my expectations should have been higher. this was a very nice offering from fremont and im glad i have another.
