Poured into a wine glass. An opaque brown color with a thick tan head. Aromas of cocoa, toast, and burnt coffee. The taste was an incredibly rich and velvety chocolate malt flavor with balanced roasted malt and a smooth bitterness. A silky feel and smooth taste. One of the best oatmeal stouts that I've had.

Pitch black with a thin mocha head that leaves lacing. Smell is wonderful, like fudge. Taste is of chocolate, coffee, bitter roast, with a sweetness. Feel is creamy with moderate carbonation. Very solid oatmeal stout. A ste for 4.99.

Into a New Belgium globe - pours very dark and opaque, beautiful brown head of lacing.

Smell is heavy on the oatmeal character, this brew smells like it packs a punch...tons of oatmeal character, dark chocolate, roasted malt, dry nuttiness, peanut butter? Smell is more of the same, heavy oatmeal presence that lends to a full bodied mouthfeel. Oatmeal and chocolate flavors, with more hints of that peanut butter character that I really dig. Hints of espresso bitterness and cherry cordial on the dry finish.

Overall this is great stuff.

22 oz. bottle:

Pours jet black. A tan head thins to a lasting cover. Slowly vanishing lace sticks.

The smell is very rich and dark. Chocolate cake, anise dark fruit (plum), toffee/caramel, and a spicy, earthy slightly roasty touch.

The taste is of rich chocolate, molasses and anise. Alcohol shows. Earthy roasted tone in the finish balances the sweetness.

It is full. Somewhat sharp for an oatmeal stout, probably due to the noticeable alcohol.

It's hot but very enjoyable and it doesn't seem to mask the richness. I really enjoyed this, especially the complex, robust nose.

look: 3.75 | smell: 4 | taste: 4 | feel: 4.5 | overall: 4

Appearance: Poured into a pint glass. Almost half inch of tan autumnal rust sits atop a dark, coffee-hued body.

Smell: Dark chocolate, vanilla, candied ginger, hoppy undercurrents, alcohol.

Taste: Comes on surprisingly bright but darkens up as it progresses. Espresso, ancient grains, slight maltiness, finish is a bit like dark chocolate.

Mouthfeel: Rich and mostly smooth, but not velvety. Light carbonation suits the dark richness of this beer pretty well.

look: 4.25 | smell: 4 | taste: 4.5 | feel: 4.5 | overall: 4.5

Appearance: pours a deep black color, just barely a hint of mahogany around the edges. a finger plus of a deep tan head with strong retention and leaving behind a frothy lacing. completely dark and opaque.

Smell: coffee ground, chocolate, earthy bitterness, some dark fruits.

Taste: opens with some bittersweet bakers chocolate, taste opens up with a strong and sweet maltiness that hints on dark fruits. a small amount of coffee ground comes in and mixes with the chocolate. the end has a bit more graininess and herbal, spicy and earthy hops.

Mouthfeel: smooth and velvety. nicely bitter, thick but not chewy.

Overall: I have yet to be disapointed by Fremont and this is no exception. Big and bold for 8% but also smooth and drinkable. Finds a nice balance on the borderline of everyday stout and a big heavy imperial.

Poured into a Pint Defiance tulip. The body is a dark black with a tan two finger head. Aromas consist of dark chocolate and espresso. The flavors are the same. Heavy bodied with medium carbonation and silky smooth.

Thanks to blacknyellow20 for this beer, along with the bourbon coffee lactose lactating extravaganza version, which I just popped open for a side-by-side. 12 oz. can.

The pour is black. Nose is simple roast with sweet malt. Straightforward.

Dark Star is nice. Lovely oaty mouth (& not that mushy oatmeal kind). Quick-hitting sweetness that turns towards honey, moderate roast, lactose that becomes more prominent as the beer warms, & a creamy mCCCC mouthfeel. Suckable.

If more oatmeal stouts tasted like this, I would drink more oatmeal stouts. Say that fast five times. I can’t. Very good beer.

Nice and dark color, little to no head but kept some nice bubbles still. Coffee flavor comes through strong, little bit of chocolate. Real lite mouth feel for how dark it is.
Overall one of the better oatmeal stouts ive had.

From a bomber a year and a half old, into a yeti snifter. Pours a brown/black cola color with a 1 finger khaki head, some nice lacing. Some roasty and smokey notes, also some bittersweet chocolate.

On tap at the brewery

A: A dark blackish brown with one finger tan head that lingered. Nice lacing.

S: Smokey charred malts with an oat undertone and dark fruits popping up all around. Some coffee notes, too.

T: Terrific and smooth with toasty semi-sweet chocolate mixed in with some coffee on the finish. Dark fruits (dates, plums, figs). Sweet, robust and highly drinkable. The best of our flight, for sure.

M: Medium to heavy with medium, chewy carbonation.

O: The wife insisted we buy 2 bottles to go; one for us, one to share.

Grunt fill from Albertsons. Dark and oily with fluffy beige head. Dark roast grains, ad expected, for the aroma. Taste is where this picks up the pace. Elements of vanilla, oak, peat and molasses. Slick mouth feel, nice bite at finish

12oz can poured into a snifter
Canned 12/19/14

A- pours a near jet black color with a two-finger creamy dark tan head that retains for a while before settling into a film floating on top

S- roasted charred malt gives some smoky notes along with dark chocolate, raisin, fig & coffee. Also some sweet oats, along with some earthy & herbal tones

T- dark and roasty up front with notes of bitter dark chocolate, along with charcoal, coffee, fig & date. Earthy and slightly smoky finish with more chocolate and a hint of coffee on the linger

M- heavy body with moderate-low carbonation leads to a creamy mouthfeel that continues into a silky smooth finish, abv hidden very well

O- a world class oatmeal stout, when it comes to a straight up stout, no barrel aging, no extra adjuncts, this is about as good as it gets

In my opinion, a seriously good oatmeal stout. The smell is faint but the taste is of bitter coffee and dark roast malts. Creamy smooth and well balanced. Fantastic!

Beautiful dark color, dark tan head.
und
Smell is mild, fine, from memory, characteristic of stout, malty.

Taste is fine, not grand; not especially memorable.

Mouthfeel is appropriately rich - but seriously under-carbonated - ruins the beer. Alas.

Finish is ok, but has some off notes, cola perhaps.

Very mixed bag, this one. Undercarbonation ruins it - don't buy again.

What a phenomenal brew from Fremont! By far my favorite of their lineup of beers in cans or bottles. I usually like oatmeal stouts anyway but at 8% abv this one is exceptional. Smooth and creamy mouthfeel, great lingering aftertaste that keeps me coming back for more and probably drinking this high alcohol beer a little too fast! A must try if you're at all a fan of the style.

I bought a bottle of Dark Star Oatmeal Stout in a bottle shop. Poured in to a pint glass.

Pours a black walnut color, opaque with a creamy tan head.

Smell is faint, some sweet malt and smoke aromas.

Taste is a bitter coffee and chocolate flavor, with a dairy sweet flavor, and a dry bitter charcoal finish.

Mouthfeel is full-bodied, cloying with pleasant aftertaste.

Overall a very good stout.

22oz bottle, bottled 11/02/15. Served in a can glass. Beer pours pitch black in color and forms a large-ish frothy head. Aroma of roasted nuts and burnt caramel. Flavor is classic oatmeal stout with a creamy mouthfeel and the volume turned up just a little bit. Really dominant flavor of bitter cocoa. Hop balance is exactly where it should be. Fremont calls this an Imperial Oatmeal Stout at 8% ABV, but imperial stouts frequently go even higher and bring more powerful, off the wall flavors. This to me seems more of a great high-gravity execution of a classic style. Would happily drink again.

Poured from bomber and looking near perfect in glass. Chocolate on the nose initially but fades. Taste is bittersweet chocolate and really roasted malts. Huge hop profile on this seeing how this is a really fresh bottle. 8% abv no need to age and no real alcohol burn. Downside mouthfeel is not as rich and creamy as I would have liked from an oatmeal stout. Overall a well balanced beer could be a goto.

22 oz bottle. Bottled on 11/30/2015 (18 days ago, Yes ! )

Pours a solid black body with a creamy frothy tan head that really does look like a chocolate shake ( I'm borrowing the milkshake thing from previous reviewer, ONovoMexicano. It's spot on!) Good retention and lacing.

Smell (while not overly prominent) is roasted malt that come across as coffee

Taste follows but it's more boozy then the smell. Nice hop finish gives it a good balance.

Creamy feel is outstanding !

Really liked this oatmeal stout. The texture is amazing and the rest is pretty good too

Bomber poured into a tulip glass.

Nice on appearance. Oatmeal/ khaki-head of the frothy, chewy, milkshake-like variety. Pitch-black liquid that contrasts excellently with the head. Lace develops in sticky splotches as the head recedes. 5

Dark roasted malt and grassy hop notes. Light chocolatey notes and vanilla. Nothing particularly seductive or mind-blowing, but it's still a nice aroma. 4

Continued dark malt presence on the tongue with a cocoa and chocolate syrup complement and vanilla, all of which make for a roasty, unsweetened hot chocolate sort of flavor experience. Initially, I was tasting a grassier, earthier hop flavor, but some light citrus notes sneak in and are a pleasing addition. 4.25

They nailed the oatmeal stout quality that one wants when drinking this style. This is roasty with a thick, viscous, creamy feel and light sweetness that roll over the tongue something lovely. Bitterness is light on the finish and mingles with a brown sugary taste and feel in a way that well displays the delicate balance of sensations. I will say, I appreciate the body on this, but some might find it thin. 4.25

I've had a lot of Fremont brews over the past year and found them to be either spectacular gems or moderate duds. This is the former. Excellent.

I love an oatmeal stout and this and Ninkasi are my two go to's. This beauty is underrated as it is full of amazing flavors while being extremely light bodied and drinkable. Never had such a light-hearted stout they will probably find it coursing though my liver when I'm dead and gone!

12 oz can. Pours jet black, thick tan head with good retention. Mild aroma of chocolate and roasted coffee. Good oatmeal stout taste with dark chocolate and coffee, a dry finish with a decent amount of bitterness. Medium slick creamy mouthfeel. Overall very good oatmeal stout, hides the alcohol well.

Have had more times than I can count. This time out of a 12oz. can into a tulip glass. Pour is extremely dark with a thin layer of dark tan head. Aroma is primarily coffee with some slight cocoa. Taste is a nice mix of chocolate and coffee. Mouthfeel is incredibly smooth, silky with a slightly dry finish. Overall one of the best oatmeal stouts I've had.
