Appearance: amber colored (“amber” as in fossilized pine resin). The beer is wonderfully bright. The head is bright white, which foams up to 1 finger before fading quickly to only a lacing. Very pretty. The absence of head retention prevents this beer from scoring higher.

Aroma: the hops come through with prominent pineapple combined with freshly cut juvenile pine.

Flavor: dominant hops that fade to a solid malt background without being overly malty. The malt has toasty notes to it. Very well balanced. This reminds me of a heavier bodied Pliny the Elder, but perhaps a bit hoppier than PtE.

Mouthfeel: medium-medium, but the body seemed to grow heavier the more I drank.

Overall: I have a positive opinion of Fremont’s the Sister, but the Brother is better. A solid effort. Beautiful in appearance and well balanced. Certainly worth trying.

Surprisingly golden as one might expect a richer amber color for an imperial. Tropical and pine notes to the nose. Amazingly juicy with the expected hoppiness and subtle complexity. Very light and effervescent feel. Overall a great beer!

12oz can

Pours almost two fingers of white head into my can-style glass. Very pillowy, not quite creamy looking. The body is a dark orange, somewhat hazy as well. Decent amount of bubbles coming up. This looks good so far.

The nose here is nice. Tropical fruits up front, with a clean sweetness. A little perfumey. The bitter, typical hops are hiding in the background, behind the fruity notes. Really a deep fruit aroma. They list white wheat, and while they don’t market this as a New England IPA, it certainly has a little of that feel to it. Overall this is simple, but pretty nice.

The taste has a touch more of that sweet sticky malt than I would prefer. Not quite as “smooth” as the nose was. Bitterness hits first, with a little fruitiness, some sweetness, and a noticeable astringent booze. It’s not bad, but it feels a little all over the place, and that booze is too noticeable. It’s ok overall.

The mouthfeel is pretty decent. The carbonation is right on, it’s just above medium. The body certainly has some girth to it, it noticeably thick. The beer is cleaning up a little bit, and the sweet stickiness is not as noticeable. Bitterness is not over the top, but does linger somewhat.

This is not one of the more drinkable Imperial IPA’s that I’ve had recently. The booze makes it hard to go down. I’m a big boy, and this is still a good enough beer that I’ll drink it fast. But specifically speaking, it’s not terribly drinkable.

Overall this is not terrible. However, it had some potential to be a clean, fruity IPA, and it fell short. Too much booze, and not enough of the aromas coming through on the taste.

The appearance turned out pretty good. The head retention wasn’t anything special, but I got some pretty decent lacing all the way down the glass.

Poured from a 12oz can to a IPA glass.
Look- golden, turbid, good lacing, head retention slightly lacking.
Smell- floral, tropical.
Taste- a nice punch of hoppy goodness, citrusy, spicy/piney finish.
Feel- smooth, perfect consistency.
Overall- very good beer!

Good dark gold color, caramel and resin on the nose. Resinous flavor. Kind of shallow in my opinion. The hops are there but it has no depth. Medium bodied.

Dark amber with about an inch of white head. Enjoyable flavor of raspberry, orange, and pine, with a bit of a cracker flavor in the malts. Slightly syrupy, but not too thick or cloying.

Still exploring Fremont's impressive line up. The brother is an all-out West Coast hop bomb, dark amber pour, thick head and heavy lacing. Hops is all you smell and all you taste. Well done, a bit rough around the edges. Add some honey and you're in Hopslam territory. A solid DIPA, and one is enough. Thank you very much.

Poured from 12oz can into Snifter glass. No date.

L: Hop haze of bronze color, half finger head has good retention but eventually fades into a thick ring with an island.

S: Lots of citrus and pine with some spiciness in the background.

T: Again a lot of citrus and pine, with a good spiciness.

F: Medium body, good carbonation, lingering bone dry hop residuals.

O: A pretty nice IIPA.

One of the best if not the best DIPAs that I have ever had. My Parents brought me back some from their trip to Seattle and it is well worth getting a plane ticket just for this beer not to mention all of the other great beers Fremont does. Awesome IPA.
